Har har

Though my idea for crossbow traps is that when triggered, a turret pops up and begins firing bolts... Pew pew...

cage traps actually take up five tiles in a plus shape. the middle is a trigger, the four adjacent tiles are just flat surfaces and lay on the ground.  when the trigger is stepped on, the four flat surfaces shoot upwards at a 90 degree angle, forming walls.

But you can have walls on those four tiles, are you saying that the cage phases through other objects?

As I generally use stone-fall traps as an early defense against wildlife, I've always imagined the trap to be some sort of mechanism that starts with an ominous *click*, then lazily spring a boulder into the air, which gracefully sails in an arc before coming down and crushing itself on the invader's head.

As for cages ... logically, I would think of cages as some sort of net, but that wouldn't be fun, and a net isn't exactly a cage anyways ! So the magnificent all-purpose dwarven mechanism must simply springs a cage into the air, which gracefully sails in an arc before coming down on top of the invader's head.

I always imagined it like a giant squisher thing for the spike traps.

I picture them as like.. jungle gym/monkey bar like framings with weapons perched about them. Swinging axeblades hung from the top, crossbows perched on the sides, things like that.

Like thus? Doesn't take much imagination. :P

It's like stepping on a rake, except the rake has an axe blade on the handle.

Stone traps outside.

It's like stepping on a rake, except the rake has an axe blade on the handle.

That, sir, is a stroke of military genius. Some day, I'll defeat an advancing army with this technique.

Serrated disk traps.  Goblin steps on a pressure plate that instantly sends a signal to the mountainhome.  The mountainhome uses a battery of modified atom smasher powered ballistas to fire three large serrated discs at the goblin with near tile-perfect accuracy per activation at the speed of light. Vaporizing the disc on impact.  The slight delay between disc trap activations is the mountainhome's legendary siege operators reloading the discs.

The discs themselves are supercompacted atom smasher leftovers, using secret methods known only to the siege operator elite transformed into any materiel desired and shaped into serrated disc form.

That's how you can get a serrated disk headshots from traps that could only reasonably be coming out of the floor.  When you think about it, it makes sense.
