they always get me. I've got a fortress up and running smoothly, starting to make things really click then BAM, a bunch of no-good-nothings show up and everything falls apart as you desperately try and get things balenced again before the NEXT wave of idiots arrives!

Helps to plan in advance. Like, start making beds for the flood of new migrants before the artifact steel weapon is even finished, sort of thing.

I need my migrants to feed my vampires. I prefer to let the vampires roam free so the more useless drains of resources they have a chance to eat the better, that way they don't eat my smiths.

I always limit the number of allowable dwarves in my fortress to 30-40 for the the beginning until I have things running well enough to prepare for more. I like to think the dwarves are a species who would like efficiency enough to actually tell the mountainhome when  they are prepared to accept new inhabitants. It also gives me time to nickname each dwarf by their family name (assigned by choosing part of their last name as a clan name.) so I can track the clans in the fortress and maybe assign clan housing accordingly. Once things are running smoothly, I allow more migrants in and repeat.

...A True Dwarf does not use silly little "Site Finders", he merely closes one eye and points his finger at a map, then walks there no matter what. If the entire site is on fire, he will dig a hole in the ground; If there is a goblin fortress in the way, he will dig a hole in the ground; If the ground is under 10 layers of water, HE WILL DIG A HOLE IN THE GROUND.

the entrance of my fortress leads either to the barracks which leads into the fortress or a 20 levels deep pit with a bridge

every migrant without weapon skill or labor skill i need goes down the drain, i even get stuff to give away to caravans

I don't mind it really. I don't like bothering with food and such, so I just have 2 10x10 plump helmet farms, 3 stills, and a 40x40 food storage. When migrants arrive, I just screen for vampires and draft a few into the military, letting the rest bum around until I need stockpiles refilled or several hundred dolomite boulders hauled out of my new colosseum.

Nope, it's just annoying. What is actually hard is when ambushes arrive and you are unprepared.

Can always use more hauling drones.

Who else would power my ~50 smelters?

Hint: Set your pop cap and plan ahead. When you've dug out the 200 bedrooms in the first two years, you don't need to worry about not having enough later.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Make farm plots bigger than 3x3? O.o

I'm always having too much food. Overflowing stockpiles that eat framerate.

how do you limit the pop-cap? (sorry for the newbish question. and oh for the love of god. >.< I had a nice fortress going with 16 dwarves then bam 30 migrants appear >.< one of whome is in a strange mood -_-
Edit : nevermind, figured it out. But my fortress got wiped out in a siege when mr mysterious mood made a platinum amulet covered in gold and spinel -_-

on a different side note, where did all the animals go? o.0 None of my embarks had any animals whatsoever, save for a few rats and dragonflys, and maybe a duck or two. not a single thing to use my traps on, before i was completely overwhelmed by the goblin siege -_-

I don't have a problem with them untill i need someone for a specific job and need to sort through 50 people with random skills to see which should be doing what job, but generally most migrant waves just end up being 90% haulers and military fodder.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.
