[In Ligoria, inside the Palace's throne room]

"I'd like to say, William, thank you for taking my defense. I owe you a big one."

William is sitting on the table, looking tired.

"Tit for tat. You made a gesture, and I made a gesture. You said you didn't want me harmed, I said I didn't want you harmed. Tit. For. Tat. The offer I made about my retinue still stands, if you want. I won't make you do anything though."

He lays back on the table, and gives a short barking laugh.

"I was expecting to walk into the ranks and slaughter my way to Laythe. Funny, eh?"

Then William abruptly changes the subject.

"Wonder if I'll be the King or just a Lord...I'll be pissed if I gave up Polca for nothing."

"Hopefully you will be king. We might be able to arrange that... As for your offer... I'd prefer to remain Laythe's direct vassal. She is easier to fool than you, which should make climbing back up the ranks easier. However, you can consider that I owe you a favor. A big one."

William gives a shrug of his shoulders, his eyes staring at the ceiling. He brings a hand up and runs it through his hair.

"Okay then."

He taps once, jarringly, on the table.

"Type of wood is this, anyway?"

Kathos smiled.

"I don't know. You'll have to ask Laythe what wood had been used to make her throne. It's that."

Eurika crept up on Mark, and poked him.

"It's over, and rather quickly, too. A bloodless conflict... I'd suppose you are free to go now. The ruler of Ligoria capitulated to prevent Ligoria from being crippled and susceptible to outside forces. So ... you said you agreed to help me in my endeavor?"

In retrospect, poking a suit of armor, leather or not, wasn't the best for the holistic wellbeing of her index finger.

Mark turned to see Eurika behind him.

"I didn't say that. I said I would consider helping after appraising whoever I'd be working for. Who else besides you is involved in this project you're working on?"

((BTW, Mark's armor isn't leather; it's chain armor with a surcoat over it.))

Eurika tapped her cheek and assumed a pondering expression.

"Well, it's mostly me, but there was that girl with silver hair and green eyes whose name was Eurika... wait, that's me too. I guess I'm all alone. I don't recieve orders from anyone as of right now."

"'Not taking orders' doesn't necessarily mean 'not working with'. How about a different question: what's your end goal with the cannon? Are you going to sell the designs to someone? Outfit your own ships with them? Give me some details on the operation."

Eurika's expression became more serious. She sat down on the grass and patted a patch of it, asking Mark to take a seat.

She said, "I'm not selling it. The design of the cannon has to stay in one country forthe good of everyone, but most of all me. I shall gift unto the seas an armada never heard hitherto, arme with cannons and capable of giving the navies of the small island nations an axial application of force they will never recover from. Then, the seas will be ruled by an iron fist. Marine safety will be ensured, since pirates and privateers cannot compete with artillery."

She paused. "Like I said before, cannons are more humane, ironically, since ballistae are solely for killing people, while cannon is for dealing structural damage. I'm not planning on lending cannons to mobile artillery platforms since that's a major risk. Maybe for fixed defenses. Also, I'm probably not giving them easily to anyone who asks."

Lan stood at the intersection, eyes checking the roads for any passerby and signs. Due to the light, it was hard to recognize the foreign scrawl, but the engravings were easier to follow. There was a nearby inn, and a better source of information compared to the guards around.

Deciding this age-old tradition of seeking information from the innkeep would be wiser, Laneira strode through the inn doors and approached the keeper in a non-threatening way.

"Greetings, keeper. Excuse my intrusion, but would you know of a place that has a red door as the entrance. In these parts, large building, housing a proficient swordsman so I've heard."

She looked away for a moment, admiring the detail of the building before turning back. "And would you have any news of Ligoria or Palmia, perchance? I'm not from these parts and am curious on the state of affairs."

Question the innkeeper

Mark sat down next to Eurika.

"Your plan has holes in it. You say you want to 'rule the seas with an iron fist'. Quite frankly, that will never work. No other nation would agree to leave you in a position of such power, and you wouldn't be capable of maintaining your navy without many other nations supporting you financially. You want to eliminate the threat of pirates? Good luck patrolling the entire coast, as well as the trade routes that travel away from the mainland." He shook his head. "I would never think that you would simply give away cannons. Maybe sell them, but not just give them away. Even without allowing any of them to leave your command, word of your artillery would get out and other peoples would begin to design firearms of their own."

After a moment's thought, Mark continued talking. "If you're amenable to advice, I would advocate focusing humanitarian efforts on dry land. Assuming, of course, that you're being honest about your intentions."

He stood up and turned to go.

"I apologize for not being helpful in this regard," he said, started off walking towards the open city gates.

Mark heads into the city and finds a tavern. Once there, he tries to gauge the status of the city and it's government (that is, the populace's opinions on it's rulers, the economic situation, etc.).

Paid....
For what?
Putting some dirt on your precious cape?
For bumping into you?
You might be Noble or something, but that doesn't mean you have to look down on everyone around you.
Maybe at home you have authority, but you aren't home, you're in Polca.
I'm not going to pay you for that.
Now let me go!

Say this^ and try to intimidate the man.

Eurika almost sputtered as Mark left without letting her respond.

"My, that was quite a gentleman, who doesn't understand the concept of ... things."

Nobody said she would patrol the seas. The mere threat of overwhelming force should be enough to increase marine safety... she mused, as she headed to meet with Laythe.

Throne room, William and Kathos' audience.

"It's ebony. Imported from across the sea to the southwest. I hope I'm not interrupting anything important."

Throne room, Eurika's audience.

"Well, what did you want to talk about Eurika?"
