A reliable monthly timer
« on: March 15, 2012, 12:29:26 am »

Do as follows:

Lock a werecursed dwarf in a 1-tile room with a pressure plate in it, set to activate when anything heavier than a dwarf steps on it.
Now, your dorf will activate the plate every month when it turns helplessly into a hideous (and, importantly, heavy) blight on Armok's perfect world, initiating the monthly meeting hall flood bath.

Alternative method for less heavy creatures: Set the plate to activate whenever a non-citizen steps on it.

Also,
You know, you don't even need to drop booze on him-- apparently, he won't die of thirst before he gets cured of it from the change.
...so that's helpful.

Note - I haven't actually tried this, so don't get your hopes too high just yet. Any test results will be appreciated.

*Sniff* No, it's fine. I get it. *Sniff* You just don't want a well-organised, automated fort running on *sniff* werebeast time. You don't care about the time spent researching the various techniques described here. *sniffle* You just don't want me here.

Just... just go.

It's a good idea, but what exactly could it be used for?

My only idea is a monthly magma extermination of pitted enemies.

Of all the insane clock designs we have on this forum, this one is remarkable straightforward and workable.     What time of month does the change happen?

I can think of multiple uses for this. I need to go start a fort and catch a werebeast now.

This sounds like it would work perfectly with something somebody was looking for a week or two ago-- a regular, automated way to dump stuff into another layer. Put a stockpile in front of a floodgate, in front of the hole and you're set!

...I recall there being some problem with the idea of using water to move stuff, but that's another story...

Like I said before, I think this is a really good idea, although it needs to be verified that a werebeast changing on a pressure plate will trigger/untrigger that plate.  I expect it does work, though.

There is a risk of insanity with denying a werebeast food and water.  Of course, insanity is probably just fine.

Applications include seasonal irrigation (although I think that's no longer necessary?), doomsday clock, monthly management of bridges controlling access to the trade depot, blocking off access to freezing bodies of water at dangerous times, "spring cleaning" fortress flooding, etc.  Most applications would require integrating some sort of counter, which is maybe beyond some players, but not ridiculously complicated.

It's ok, you're just being spurned by all the people who spent weeks on magnificently over-engineered clocks using complicated mazes based on binary logic and goblin run speeds. You're like the guy who walks up to the mechanics working on the magma landmines and says "Eh, wot if I just stick 'em gobbos with this sword 'ere?"

It's with the full moon, so technically it's not monthly. You can't use it to time the change of the month. You can just use it to time a period that is almost a month long. It's only really useful because it's both simple and long.

Yep. No-one appreciates simplicity any more... *Sigh*

Presumably because of its long (relative to other clock designs) time loop it could be used to trigger other short loop systems that have a timing variation that isn't significant over only a month. Say monthly dropping a goblin into a clock that has to trigger 10 times per month, at the end of the 10 loops the goblin resets and awaits the were-chime to begin again...

Now where did I put that caged were-elf (knowing my luck its a were-elf/cougar or something with no weight difference)

Werecratures are trapavoid. You need plate to be triggered by dwarf/elf/whatever.
And dwarven month is 28 days, just like moon cycle.

Ah, really? Well, it's not much of a problem.

The complicated way of fixing it would be to cover the plate in GCS webs.

I just thought of an actual use for this!

You can use it in your arena so that it releases the werebeasts into the goblin pit the moment they start their rampage :D

You probably had a kobold were, as I have had plenty of human and dwarven weres turn up in my traps.  Does anyone know how the size of the wereform is calculated?  Will a werecavy be bloodthirsty but small and puntable (and too light to trigger traps), or will it be a large and terrifying guineaboar?  Or a wereelephant, will it be as large as an ordinary elephant, or more dwarf sized?
