Re: the old problem, male birds don't mate through spores like other beasties, they have to be in the same room as the eggs. Might be the problem.

This isn't true at all, I've raised many generations of turkeys with the males locked in a sealed room away from the females.

All you need for raising egg-layers :
-females and males, quite obviously
-female access to nest box
-not disturbing the eggs (they should be kept on the nestbox at ALL times)
-time

Will forbidden eggs hatch? Forbidding the doors when I have "semi-wild" and "Trained" animals that they cant reach isn't my favourite pastime.

Since when have birds observed actual non-sporing behavior.  Site your science please!

behavior.  Site

Site

:o  Shouldn't that be "cite"?? Otherwise you're asking about where the science took place...

And to contribute to this topic:
I have not seen forbidden eggs hatch, but haven't paid close attention so don't take this as true. You could just set up a separate room for your egg production, and keep animals being trained in their own 2x2 cells. Then, if they rever to a wild state, the game will pause and recenter, and you can just deforbid the doors.

Rather than forbidding door or the eggs themselves, I go into my food stockpiles and disallow the type egg I want to hatch from being stockpiled, and before long I'm upto my knees in poults

Yes, but no. Yes, forbidden eggs will hatch. No, forbidden eggs that get disturbed by a trainer standing in the same square as the eggs to reinforce the training will not hatch. If you want eggs from semi-wild animals, you'll need to take the risk of them reverting. But they are behind locked doors, no?

I've never seen eggs that have been disturbed (stepped on by a dwarf, had mom leave the nest for even a split second) hatch. I don't know if other animals stepping on the nest disturb the eggs or not.
