Questions on things, starting with, fowl. (as in, Birds)
« on: March 12, 2012, 01:08:48 pm »

Hello, as you probably noticed I've been returning... not that any of you really new me before, and so I'd figure I'd atleast make this topic for questions that I just can't seem to find answers for on the wiki.

The first one being, Bird Reproduction.

So, I've followed the wiki, more or less, letter to letter on this one, I've built a few nest boxes, the hens are setting on them and laying, I do indeed have a male of the same species (turkeys, and I also have a peahen/cock as well doing much the same) My dwarves can not access them to gather them (yaaaaaay forbidden doors), but I'm not getting any young turkeys to supply my once planned Turkey Industry... is there something that I'm just missing?

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

They need a while to hatch, of course.

He already clearly said he had males.

If anyone finds the answer, let me know.  I can't get thingies to hatch either.  It's been years in some cases.

It's also possible that those particular eggs aren't fertilized.

I was able to get mine to hatch, out of 35+ eggs, roughly 19 hatched all at the same time. The odd thing though was once they grew to adults I had them all butchered, didn't get any meat from them(unless my cooks were going really fast and I never noticed) and I also didn't get any hides to tan for leather.

If any of your dwarves so much as walk on the tile with the eggs, they will never hatch. Designate the tiles as forbidden.

Most domestic animals become sexually mature at age 1 year, but don't reach full size until age 2. A just-barely-adolescent turkey may be too small to give any meat, especially if they're particularly small specimens. Geese may be better for meat for that reason, as they reach full size at age 1 and sexually mature at the same time and are only slightly smaller than turkeys.

Drop a nest box, watch the bird go to the nest box, press 't' and forbid the eggs.  Bring half a dozen turkey hens and a gobbler.  You don't need to mess with forbidding doors or kitchen settings.

You'll be up to your butt in poults if you forbid a couple of clutches if eggs.

I just change the raws for turkey, [CHILD:2]  That way they change from poult to gobbler when they're butcherable size.

Welp, I didn't get to figure it out, my fortress didn't outlast the first few goblin ambushes. (Well, they survived... and didn't tantrum spiral, but the next ambush to wander in will just slaughter the survivors.) So I'm just gonna abandon and call it a day I guess, oh well, time to change ye-old strat and start up again. ^.^ I atleast got stories, like how awsome legendary miners are at not giving a fuck about things attacking them while their legs are broken. XD

I think i was on to something with the plan of 'rush to breach the cavern layer' but I should just locked myself undergroun by that point and lived purely off of Surface Grown Cavern Trees until I had a decent enough military/trap line to not worry about the surface creatures...

Um, How do I get my archers to use Archery Targets? I had them set up, a room made, and assigned, to the squad, I made sure the target was 'facing' at a decent angle, that my dudes had ammo, quivers, and crossbows assigned... and nada.

Re: the old problem, male birds don't mate through spores like other beasties, they have to be in the same room as the eggs. Might be the problem.

Re: archery targets, what version are you using? If it's before 34.03, the targets are bugged to uselessness.

Since when have birds observed actual non-sporing behavior.  Site your science please!

Well, my science would say the opposite, cause they were in the same room, as for the targets: Aah, okay, I'm using an outdated version, that I'm actually going to update... probably now, as soon as I figure out if the LNP is compatable with me just updating straight up...
