I think my fortress just dodged a very close bullet
« on: March 02, 2012, 09:14:03 pm »

So I am only a few months into my fortress, getting ready for the traders, suddenly a bloodthirsty werewolf appears at the edge of the map. I think "Wtf? I think im fucked" (Haven't played DF in a while), since the map has no neighbors except dwarves and is calm I hadn't bothered forming any sort of defenses, so he charges at my fortress while I huddle my 20 dwarves in the dining room and brace for impact hoping that my numbers will overcome the werewolf, then just as he is about to attack he transforms into a human child and runs away and off the map, I sighed in relief.

Pretty much... yes.

Walk of doom.  Its a bit cheesey, but it works.  Avoid using severing weapons with werebeasts! Dwarven cloning can occur!

That's happened to me with every werebeast to show up. Is this not normal? I just figured it was bugged.

Is it because light travels faster than sound,
that people appear bright until you hear them speak?

In fortress mode a full moon doesn't last for very long, so a were-creature can really only do a hit-and-run attack on dwarves who are already outside (at least, this is what I've heard).

They only stick around for 1/84th of a season time exactly how long a day is in fortress mode, the only people who are ever really at risk are fishermen and woodcutters who happen to be near where it enters the map.

The mental image is hilarious.  A horrifying monster appears on the horizon!  It charges at the fortress, the defenseless dwarves hiding inside!  But just as it reaches the front door, the moon slips beneath the horizon, and the monster transforms into a naked human child.  Sheepishly, he scurries off.

I found a historical person in my current world who was a were-elephant.

It's a dwarf.  Their natural habitat is "trapped on the wrong side of a wall".

Flinging children halfway across the map to land in magma is good, wholesome fun, but extramarital reproduction?  Why, that's just unseemly!

Makes me wonder. Is there anything stopping a Were-dragon?
