A Tale in the Desert (MMO focused on crafting)
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:44:06 pm »

Is such a wonderful game! I can't believe I couldn't find a thread about it on bay12; it's right up our alley!  Check it out - http://www.atitd.com/

It's a game basically built around crafting, community, and trials. It's difficult to advance, yet achievable, hundreds if not thousands of things to do, including climb a ridiculously tall and convoluted tech tree, starting with gathering grass and drying into straw as an ingredient of bricks.

For those of you who already play, message me in game, and maybe we can get a DF Community guild started! TyluiHythuk is the character name...!

I've played it a few times, I even had a payed account once,
It's best if you start playing at the beginning of a telling.

In the past, it wasn't even worth playing if you were more than 2 weeks late to the start of a new telling. I had a sub for a year, but that was 3+ years ago now, so who knows if it's different.

I participated in a few tellings and agree with some of the other posters, although the community is often fairly good about getting new players up and running.

There is normally a huge population at the start, but it normally winds up being those that have more time to invest succeed. I burned myself out in Tale 5, I did LOVE the game though. Starting with barely any knowledge and growing your little camp into a sprawling compound was great fun, although I wish there were more buildings to give it a better look (maybe like Xsyon).

The current telling(tale 6) is only about 3 months old; I don't feel too far behind really. I think I would be able to catch up in about a week or two, but I'd rather take my time and enjoy the ride.

Sadly the game doesn't seem to be improving all that much as it goes along. It's kind of stuck at a point where they don't have enough subscribers to pay for more devs, so they can't really do a better engine to lure in more people - it's definitely looking more and more dated and flawed.

Is it possible to create your own villages?

I've been in 2 tellings (Tale4 and Tale5 shard Bastet if memory serves well) so far, always left after about 2-3 months, it's a good game and the community is full of interesting people, but after a while it can burn you out if you play non-stop, and if you don't you tend to be left behind. New players can compete but keep in mind that old players know already how things work and will always be 2 steps ahead of you in their planning.

It seems that a common mistake is to do everything by yourself (which is how i played most of the time), so if you want a good experience, try to join a community.

Villages.. as in small populated outposts with buildings or whatever.

In this game, people build compounds, which are more like workplaces, not really houses, and building a bunch of them by yourself would serve very little purpose, except for decoration.
But i guess that when a bunch of people build close by and organize their stuff as a community, you can call it a village of sorts.

When you build, you usually try to be as close as possible to natural ressources (water, grass, trees, sand, clay, etc...), public transportation (the chariot, which is like a bus stop) and facilities (schools and universities), because moving around can be quite slow.

Yah, small villages sort of pop-up I guess just by virtue of people wanting to be near chariots, water, etcetera.

Villages are an obvious part of the game. They're not really called villages, I think they're usually called settlements. They're usually built outward around chariot? stops or whatever they're called. I haven't played in a long time, but I remember enjoying just how everything was totally player-driven with no combat. Definitely don't have the time to play it anymore, though.

This game ate happy years of my life.

I recommend it very strongly to people who are physically unable to work, due to short- or long-term disability.  You will feel super productive and motivated as though it is a real job, because it is.  It's a fulfilling and creative job that can require a lot of effort, and your coworkers in building Egypt are very interesting.  Also, like any other job, it's easy to sink eight hours a day in this.

Some of the puzzles are really god damn interesting.  (I'm developing an Android game that's loosely inspired by ATITD's plant genetics, so yeah.)  The time investment, though, hoo boy.

It is a beautiful game, and I wish I had a clone of myself so he could play it.  Not willing to spend that much time, but I always wonder what I would have done in ATITD if I kept playing.
