We are all in Wurm online right now. Unfortunately the WO project was started around the same time you did the ATTID one.

Also, I imagine almost all of us will migrate to Salem when it launches.

I played ATITD in the first telling. Enjoyed it very much in moderate doses.

But the $15 monthly fee ultimately caused me to drop it. What was essentially a crafting/grinding MMO just couldn't compete with other MMO's that had combat for similar prices. In today's MMO market many games are going free-to-play, so I can't imagine re-subbing ATITD at that rate, and I'm not surprised they lack sufficient funding for development.
If they lowered their rates to $5/mo, I'd take a years subscription right now. I do have fond memories of ATITD...

If you enjoy it in moderate paces anyhow, why not get 3 months for the same price? You'll probably get bored by the end of the three months anyhow, right? ;) Then we could conduct Egyptian/Dwarven Hybrid !!SCIENCE!! together!

Well, ATITD tellings do sometimes end with oil-powered movers, clear cutting, poisons, environmentally-catastrophic mining, oh and small animals cages hidden in the middle of freaking nowhere, man.

Also building mega-projects, which occasionally are required to be bigger than the last player's to count.

So I am necro'in this aborted thread to say I've recently started messing about in ATITD and wondering if anyone else is interested in doing so as well. I'll likely make a new thread for us if so, but if not I'll let this die again.

What telling is it in now? The website has a terrible lack of updates and the forum is normally a ghost-town.

Haven and Hearth is a lot like A Tale in the Desert, but it's 2D, and free,
both games are a bit dated, and I played both for a while, but I couldn't imagine paying for aTiTD again,
H&H is a lot of fun if you have some people to play with.
like starting up a forum town.

There's (at least) one crucial difference: H&H has murder, ATITD does not. Assuming things haven't changed since the second telling, the worst thing another player could do to you is surround your claim, in which case you move.

Wikipedia suggests they're in the sixth telling, which has been going on for over one year, so they're probably over halfway through.

I'd join, but $13.95/month is a bit steep for something that feels like work.

and in H&H if you don't eat you can starve to death, and it's permadeath, where when you die you start a new character.
and it's free,
I think those are all good differences to me.

The fact that he brought up a lack of murder as a difference it sounds like death of any sort is a bad thing for him. I'm actually of the same opinion for this type of game, but I have way too many games to get through before I can pick up something as time consuming as atitd. Good luck to those playing.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

It's kinda amazing when you realize that in its own way, this game was more successful than something like Star Wars:TOR, in that people are still willing to pay a monthly fee to play, 9 years later.

It's more that player conflict in H&H is involuntary, and you stand to lose everythin, whereas conflict in ATITD is avoidable, and you only lose whatever you invested in that particular challenge. Considering the amount of time, wealth, and cooperation needed to reach the upper tech levels in ATITD, plus the dev vs players component that's brought up in the end game, the H&H social model wouldn't work well in ATITD unless you enjoy jerkery with your frustration.

In any case, ATITD is the game for peaceful (if grindy) crafting, side activities, and occasional politics, while H&H is the game for not-peaceful (and grindy) crafting, conflict, and chaos.

Also, people were willing to subscribe to SW:TOR; they can't help it if the publisher decides to go FTP.

Games don't go F2P until monthly subs become unsustainable.  Monthly subs are by far the bigger moneymaker because you're getting guaranteed income from each subscriber every month.  When developers say 'We went F2P and revenue went up 300%', they're talking about the now half-dead game, not launch month.
