Sigh. Downloading to test this. I'm so going to regret it.

Couldn't install it.

There's a thread on the FinFin forums that may be of assistance:
http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2F146143.forumromanum.com%2Fmember%2Fforum%2Fentry_ubb.user_146143.2.1110411144.1110411144.1.fin_welten_deutsch_mit_setup_fuer_windows_me_xp-finfin.html%3Fonsearch%3D1 (Translated version, the original is in German.)

It's been confirmed to work on most Windows operating systems, so you should be covered there.  The information may be a bit hard to understand, being that it's translated, but it seems clear enough to follow.

It takes a bit of work, but SimEarth can be run through DOSBox.

I found this guide to be the most informative and helpful, especially to those new to the program: http://www.glennsguides.com/2009/05/simearth-living-planet-dos-pc-game-free.html
Everything you'll need to run the game should be there.

Oh man, thank you so much. I have missed this little gem of a game. :D

I'm glad I could help.  Have fun playing!  (And don't forget the umpteen other Maxis games, most notably SimLife, a very similar title.)

The Supreme Ruler series probably fits here as well.  You pick one country of the modern (or possibly Cold War era if playing Supreme Ruler Cold War), and the computer runs the other ~150 countries.  They fight, they ally, they trade, etc.

In fact, the biggest criticism of the series is that the player's AI ministers exercise too much control (although an experienced player knows how fully control their country).

About Creatures: the expansion for Creatures 3 is standalone and free. It is also available on Linux.

It does, however, require you to create an account and login to a server that is offline these days, though there's a patch floating around somewhere to circumvent that.

I'm so glad I heard about OpenTTD from this thread.  Game's pretty fun to play, until you max out pretty much what you can do, pay off your loan in full, then have to fastforward a year or two while waiting for disaster, both financially and physically.

I've been playing quite a bit of OpenTTD myself and quite enjoying it.  Though I think soon I will need to play a game with AI opponents.

Maybe try raising the Earth's temperature? Or lowering it to freeze it.

But Cicero! Wouldn't freezing the oceans cause them to expand, thus covering even more of the total land area then they do already?

If you could force the frozen ice to build up in giant ice mountains like the polar caps of our world, maybe not? I don't know if that is how it works in Simearth though...

There was a virtual aquarium 'game' called 'El Fish' which would spend forever pre-rendering graphics for genetically evolved fish for your fishtank.

Sadly, the game starts with a CPU speed test; since and most modern PC's complete the test task in under 1 minute, giving Zero; and the game then divides something by that Zero...

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El-Fish

HOLY CRAP! THAT'S WHAT THAT GAME WAS CALLED! I've so downloaded this. I had a demo for it years ago, and always wanted to get the full version, cause it only had a few fish or something. Plus our comp was old to the point where animating a fish took hours sometime. Gonna see if DOSbox'll fix the divide by zero thing.

And I could never figure out SIMEarth. And I've never found a guide that helped much.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

In case you haven't read the last few pages of this thread, I did post a link to a guide that you may find helpful: http://www.glennsguides.com/2009/05/simearth-living-planet-dos-pc-game-free.html

Does anyone want to try a Gene Pool tournament thing? At the very least, it seems fun.
