Still, I wouldn't call the world of Prometheus to be a nice place to live, even with magnificent technology and all that jazz being everywhere.

I don't know. It doesn't seem any worse than modern day life. Just more fancy toys, like holographic screens, and spaceships, and douchey androids.

Yeah, but thats a multi-trillion (billion?) dollar scientific expedition funded by a crazy bi/trillionare who is head of the planetary megacorp, of course everything is going to look awesome and futuristic.
The rest of the world looks much bleaker (we only see one example of it in this movie, when we see outside the window where waylan is making his recording back on Earth, and it looked pretty nasty and bad off to me), the Alien movies give a better feel of how the world is in my opinion (as they are set in the same universe).

I'm pretty sure Weyland's recording was taken on Mars, not Earth. Everything is Mars Red outside and there are machines flying around building things.

I assume that the video was taken at corporate headquarters (since he wouldn't just take it at some factory). It would be in as pretty a place as feasibly possible, which obviously wasn't possible if it was on Mars.

Both, kinda. Older Shadowrun was definitely straight cyberpunk, newer Shadowrun is more postcyberpunk. In old Shadowrun the corps were pretty much the biggest bads there were, now not so much. For all the things they do, the corps aren't as near as bad as things like the horrors, and would oppose them. After all, everyone dying would be bad for business.

I wonder how hard it would be to make a microwave gun that disables electronics.  I can imagine the joy of killing somebody's noisy car alarm going off at two in the morning.   Or the stealth terrorism that one could do with it.
