5 books that you would put in your fallout shelter
« on: February 19, 2012, 09:53:46 pm »

So, if the forums are done being stupid, here's a question for you, that my mind (which is slowly becoming that of a prepper) has been pondering recently:

What books (of any genre, fiction, nonfiction, religious texts, other) would you put in your hypothetical fallout shelter, under the assumption that society as we know  it will collapse following a nuclear attack. Mine are:

1) The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien (Yes, it is one book, but usually printed in 3 volumes.)
2) The Bible, multiple authors
3) The SAS survival handbook, John Wiseman (linked because i don't know how many people know about it)
4) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, C. S. Lewis
5) The Silmarillion, J. R. R. Tolkien

1. SAS survival guide
2. Complete Shakespeare Set
3. Complete Narnia Set (which actually is sold. All 7 books in a single volume of hardcovered goodness)
4. Lord of the Rings 3 volume -> 1 set
5. The largest dictionary I could find

Why take just LWW when you can have all 7? :3

EDIT: Close candidates -
  Cosmos, Carl Sagan
Children of the Rune: Demonic, Jeon Min-Hee
  A large encyclopedia set

1. Largest Encyclopedia I can find (for practical reasons), or my very first pocket one (for sentimental reasons).
2. A bible (to control others. HA HA HA HA HA).
3. The call of Cthulhu and other weird stories - H.P. Lovecraft.
4. A complete mathematics textbook (you need maths to rebuild civilization man).
5. A guide to repairing the internets in case of nuclear asplosions.

The Prince
The Art of War
The SAS Survival Handbook
The complete works of H.P Lovecraft (They can come in one big book so I totally count this)
A Big Book of Technology (so I can rebuild some of what was lost like Windmills for electricity and flour and shiz)

I much prefer On War to The Art of War. The Art of War is essentially fighting for dummies. It's nothing but common sense.

1. Physics textbook
2. Math textbook
3. The SAS Survival Handbook, because I'd die otherwise.
4/5 Whatever struck my fancy out of the books on my shelf.

Does a kindle or laptop count as a single book?

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I can't really decide, but I have access to poster paper, a printer, and a fully-downloaded copy of Wikipedia as of January 2012. If pressed, I could make a gigantic tome of knowledge.

1) Bible (having a bible and being able to pretend that I was a priest would probably be a massive help in post-apocalyptic America, since I imagine even then many wouldn't want to kill a priest)
2) SAS handbook
3) Electrical Engineering Textbook
4) Koran (Not as useful as the bible, but it would be good to read it just in case I need to pretend I was muslim (unlikley in america, but still good just in case))
5) Some good fantasy/sci-fi book probably

Any decent encyclopedia is like 10 volumes though.

Of course not, although I don't know how useful they would be anyways since you would probably have no reliable long term power source (solar might work, but it would depend on the severity of the apocalypse, and since you would be inside underground you probably wouldn't have any.

If you can get it to the point where you can carry every volume with one hand, it counts as a single item in my book.

Fine, I just glue every single book in the world together into one humungous mass.

Dunno how I'll ever open the thing except at the ends, but still.
