Could a fire imp or magma crab have been in a wooden cage that the elves brought with them?  This is beyond my experience so excuse me if this is impossible.
Presumably the contents of the elf caravan are calculated at the point that they arrive on the map rather than being tracked before arrival, therefor the first chance a caged fire creature would have to burn things would be on arrival at map edge.

That might be related to another incident I had where a cavy burst into flames when crossing the steel bridge across my magma moat.  These elven traders didn't get anywhere near the magma, basically I got an announcement that they arrived and then four steps later...burnination. Only the first trader got roasted the rest ran away when he died.
