How the hell do you manage to get so many miners killed digging out open spaces, anyway? I'd suggest digging upwards ramps just because it's that much more difficult to get anyone killed when they're taking out the tiles overhead. I very rarely manage to kill anyone.

Three words:  Trees falling down

Hah! That is indeed what kills my miners most during those projects. And also why my woodcutters get such a workout when I want to dig massive pits :P

I have no idea where anything is. I have no idea what anything does. This is not merely a madhouse designed by a madman, but a madhouse designed by many madmen, each with an intense hatred for the previous madman's unique flavour of madness.

I don't really have a tree-felling problem for the most part as I'm pretty much past the soil layer, save for a small area across the river on the west side - it's half-sand all the way down to the ground level.

Not yet.  I'm going to wait till any bugs that crop up are ironed out, tilesets are updated for it, etc, etc.  Gonna keep working on my little project in the meantime.  Oh, but what plans I have for the new version.  Yes indeed... 8)

The landscape routinely being soaked in flammable fluids somehow seems less than benevolent.

Still digging, though i just lost five miners to a cave-in accident.  Forgot to dump the loose stones. still got 40-odd dwarves digging, so no big loss.
