Awesome, as a response to everything you just said.

How is a bunker going to survive when you remove the support that is the only thing between your fort and  ( eventually ) the depths of hell?

Easy:  I'll just build it on the wall at the very top.  It won't actually be attached to the fort

Cool.

Got any cool "Doomsday survival ideas" for the bunker?  Also, will the magma sea fill EVERYTHING if you dig out everything else, to the point that it covers the Demons and their fortresses?

No fort on the map, sadly.  Pity really.  I've always wanted to Checkerboard one.  I'm not going to Breach Hell, I've already done everything I can to the underworld.  I will, however, dig down to the lowest safest point in every spire and ensure something's over every single one when the fort drops.  Nothing says "screw you all" like unleashing Clowns into the world as your fort falls to its death.

Well,  I worked out why my metalsmiths aren't filling the order I set for more picks - part of the staircase down to the magma sea is flooded due to a little 'accident' with my floodable trade depot.  Whoops.

Got some miners digging around the flooded section now to make it right.

It's amazing how cool forts are when galvanized for one clear purpose.  The logistics, planning, etc is awesome.  I truly cannot wait for the day when Toady finishes the army arc.

Incidentally, I set a work order for 90 iron picks.  Should be enough, I think.

Have you encountered any caverns?  Also, what is the state of your military, in case you run into a cavern?

Considering you've got quite a lot of miners, each with ( in time ) good to great skill, just drafting the closest miners on the spot would already make an effective militia.

I do indeed know where the caverns are.  The first is 21 levels down.  I'll be stopping my initial digging efforts at level 20 so it stays subterranean while the dwarves build the walls.  Though thinking about it, they probably technically would anyway because of the preexisting walls above them.   :-\  .  Better safe than sorry though, I guess.

I disabled invasions.  Simply because it'd just be a headache having them roam up and down the perimeter walls, unable to get in the fort, yet still scaring everyone from their jobs.  That and it'd just make this whole endeavour take a lot longer.

First off:  Erick Blank, your dwarf died.  He caused a cave-in on himself and suffocated.  He'd become a Great Miner, incidentally.

Now, a Mason has displeased me.  Fatally so.

He somehow, despite me planning for it, got himself sealed within the A-Chamber.  And cleaned it.

Now, I actuall made a mistake;  this is actually level 7, not 8

Level 6 took a lot longer than the others because I had to channel up to clear the gaps between the bedrooms.  Shouldn't face that problem again though.

Finally, here's the current stats for Hamebalanced if anyone's curious

I've only done three good projects.  Unless you count walling Hell, flooring over Hell, making a beach, making a town, making a lake and fillingHell with magma all as seperate things.

Wow, I have actually done a lot  :-\

I didn't even mean that as boasting or anything, I was just listing them.  Didn't think it'd go that high  :o

How the hell do you manage to get so many miners killed digging out open spaces, anyway? I'd suggest digging upwards ramps just because it's that much more difficult to get anyone killed when they're taking out the tiles overhead. I very rarely manage to kill anyone.

Fascinating. During Weatherwires, the main casualty to miners was cave-ins from channeling out areas through which I had already dug tunnels. It wasn't the actual cave-in that killed them, but rather the collision with the dozens of stones which cluttered the excavation area. It seems that your project will avoid that problem entirely, since you're digging around your tunnels.
