Can I increase the size of booster rockets through research?
Jup.

As per CHASE's initiative to ensure that all manned Terran extraterrestrial assets are capable of emergency docking in relative safety, we are now willing to disclose our blueprints on docking systems for a mere $200 per interested organization, to cover our costs. The data shall be released to the public in 1965, free of charge.

Let's do both of those then!

Nirur, any suggestions for contributions to space station design?  We could always work out a joint Scot-Chinese station.

If I want to add a booster rocket to a rocket design, would I have to redesign it?  What about changing a smaller booster to a larger one?

I'm going to be getting a diamond 1 into low orbit. Anyone want particular pictures? 500$ per deviation.

I don't think I want a fully shared station at this time. Depending on how my rolls go over the next two turns, I might decide I need help with lift. If I do, I'll loan you a spot for a spacelab for X turns, complete with power and life support, in exchange for DWARF performing the station construction missions. If I change my mind and want a joint station project, I'll be building the lifesupport and power arrays, leaving your pick of thrusters, cargo dock, a giant telescope, or whatever else you think would be useful.

Re: Space Station. I'd be happy to join in on that. Look no further for some of the best thrusters known to man :)

RP..

Research
-Dr Faust makes the large thrusters more efficient
-Team two designs a two stage rocket

Construction
1 'El Parajo Cantor II'
2 'Vengador's ( 1 with the Thermobaric from the Regained II)

Missions
Launch the 'El Parajo Cantor II' with 2 'Mano de Ayuda's and a Comm Sat to stabalised MEO

Other
Sell the 'Vengador's to the Generallisimo. Tell him the of the threat, and request a military presence as guards. Speculate on 1) How to reply to an anonymous letter and 2) Why someone would want rockets if they were able to destroy STARS Base.

Expenditure
3850 (1k Thrusters, 1K second stage, 750 El Parajo, 1100 Vengadors)

You can freely attach boosters att will, and take them back off. Boosters are designed seperatly.

Anyway, Some info about station building:

Small station part(1m):
Weight: 400
Can contain:
Small lifesupport(3 People)(Small)
Storage area(Doubles storage capacity)
Small Power and computing hub( minimum 1 per station: command center) A small command station can support a station of up to 10 modules
Other
Storage capacity:100
Power required: 0.2 ( 1 solar panel= 1)

Note: Every station part needs at least 2 docking systems. One at each end.

Good to hear on boosters.  That means I can get my shuttle ready!

...except it occurs to me I don't have a pilot module.  I need to make one.

Urist regarded the letter from his Chinese counterpart.  Their proposed space station ideas had merit, and he had publicly supported them in the past.  Given the good relations between their governments, spending the pittance requested by them to obtain their design was an obvious move.

He began penning his reply, offering his services in increasing his support in research methodology.  With the Chinese parts and his reusable shuttles, a Chinese-Scot space station would be a massive leap forward for humanity.

It would be a good week.  Urist noted on his calendar to yell at the scientists again- they were bound and determined to break the computer hardware he had installed for them.

Research:
Space Shuttle:  Decrease the weight, without breaking my computers.

Booster Rocket:  Increase the maximum size.

Cockpit:  The pilot module for the space shuttle, so astronauts can steer it.  Crew of three.  The existing life support module can serve as the theoretical basis.

Designs:

[Personal Design]
Firecracker MkI Booster Rocket
Height: 3m
Weight:  375 kg
Available Payload: 425 kg
Thrust: 800 kg to LEO

Components:
Booster Rocket hull (3 meter): 25*5-> 75kg
Small thruster (1 meter): 100kg, 800kg To LEO
Solid fuel tanks x2 (2 meter): 250kg

Actually, this thing is pretty much a joke at 3m.  Design it anyway, it's free!

Building:

None this time.  Damn you economy!

Other:  The Scotonaut, whose name is Henry, needs training.  Since he's already a natural, we'll train him by launching a Spear Mk III with him in the module!

Contact the government and see if they're interested in anti-missile defense systems, given the nearby tension.

The fact that you can stack up to 4 of these boosters on a rocket makes them a bit more usefull.

Well, I did my math wrong- I forgot the 2kg thrust per 1kg of fuel and did just 1:1.  That makes it 425kg of thrust, which is actually a pretty good boost for a base-level booster.  25kg wouldn't be worth even a 1% explosion chance.

(You might want to triple check my math too.)

At 5m booster, it'd be 925kg.  At 10m booster, I could switch to a large thruster and have 2528 kg of added thrust- that's a lot, and also based on current gen fuel/booster tech.

Alright, I'm back and here's my turn:

Research:
Dr Smith will develop a monitoring computer (free)
Lab 1 will develop a specialised landing module with the help of Konrad Becker and the new hull scientist (-$1000)
Lab 2 will develop a small thruster (around the same size and weight as the thruster I am using at the moment) using an altitude compensating nozzle to make launches more efficient (-$1000)
Research cost:$2000

Design:
None this year.

Production:
2 Redstone II (-$1550)
1 Life support module (-$1000)
Production cost:$2550

Construction:
None this year.

Launch:
Launch 1: Test flight of Redstone II in preparation for Launch 2.
Launch 2: Launch the life support module(with anyone ASTRO can find who is willing to go into space) into a low earth orbit using the Redstone II rocket. Have the life support module spend 24 hours in space unless the pilot encounters serious problems in which case abort the mission.

Other:
Purchase the docking module blueprints from CHASE(-$200)

Total cost:$2000+$2550+$200=$4750

A few quick questions:
  • Do I need to do a test flight in order to improve the safety of my Redstone II design, or will any flight work for that?
  • How long would it take to reach Mercury, Venus and Mars at no extra thrust past the 200% escape cost?
  • Can I develop computers as a general technology and then commercialise them?
  • Is there such a thing as a reusable 2-stage hull? In fact, what would be the best way of making a reusable version of the Redstone II?

Any flight'll work.
Mars: a year +-
Venus: half a year
Mercurius: A year +)
You can commercialize everything. You do need to research the commercialization
You can research a reusable 2 stage hull.  It would weight a lot though.

I see. I am just curious; a few other space programs have researched solar cells (which presumably allow the development of payloads using solar power) so what other non-component researches are there (as distinct from theoretical studies)? Also, if I do a test flight before my main launch in the same turn, will the second flight be more reliable?

Um, no idea actually. Really, I just make up the tech tree as I go along. Component researches are generally things that can be used on multiple systems. I guess radiation shielding will be one, and maybe some other things might exist too.

One last question for this turn: You mentioned the ability to research different thruster shapes than the conventional cone shape, do I simply say "I research a differently shaped thruster"?

No you don't. You give me the type of thruster you want to research. WHich can be anywhere from a modified jet engine to an electrica powered thruster.

Alright, I have modified my turn to make a new kind of thruster, are there any problems with my new turn?
