Shouldn't a crossbowman actually be named an awblaster?

It is important to be specific and period-correct when talking about the most important military unit.

But awblaster is an awesome name. It conveys awe. And shows how the dwarves will blast you away. And seriosly, I don't see how this game could get any more confusing as it is.

Well if we want to get specific there was also no consolidation of spelling and often definition.

So Aebolchar is likely also correct spelling :D

i c wut u did thar.

Besides, if I recall correctly, an arbalest was a really big crossbow. Basicly in between crossbow and ballista, so it would be way too big for dwarves.

There are a lot of Crossbows between Crossbow and Ballista... soo much so I am going crazy.

Though I am excluding multilaunch weapons.

So, I think the direction of this topic at this point could best be described as suggesting that we implement different crossbow sizes? Perhaps with the new armor, combat and damage systems this could be really important! Handheld, quick-firing crossbows shouldn't be piercing dragon hide, after all.

Arblasts could be a very important, practical addition to the game.

"Arbalestier" is basically just old French for "crossbowman".  The modern term for anyone who fires a crossbow is an "Arbalist".  Technically only steel crossbows are arbalests (where the bow itself is steel) but the word's been used interchangeably, since when arbalests were invented, they became synonymous with "crossbow".  They might actually fall outside the timeframe DF is set in, but I imagine allowance could be made for their sheer dwarfiness.

I'm not sure accurate names are really necessary, let alone separate ones.  It'd be nice if steel crossbows actually did have more punch.  Then again if they did, they'd also have a rate of fire of a ballista.

I believe they were also called Cabilists, but that might of just been AOE II (age of empires 2)

I played that game, there were crossbow-wielding units called "Arbalests" but no "Cabilists".
