Refuse Plans
« on: March 23, 2009, 11:26:42 am »

Okay, so, my current fortress started out on a totally flat map. Atm, I have something like this:

Code: [Select]
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
WWXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXWW
WWX                           OO XWW
WWX                           OO XWW
WWX            ddd               XWW
WWX             d                XWW
WWX                              XWW
WWX                         DDDDDXWW
WWX                         DDDDDXWW
WWX                         DDDDDXWW
WWX                         DDDDDXWW
WWX                         DDDDDXWW
WWXXXXXXXXXXXXBBBBBXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXWW
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWBBBBBWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
WWWWWWWWWWWWWWBBBBBWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
              BBBBB

W is water, X is walls, D is Depot, d is down-stairs.

My question is, could I dig a pit at O, leading down all Z levels, and then mark that pit as a refuse pile? So that I won't have to take up as much space for one-z-level-stockpile.

You can't mark the open space itself as a refuse stockpile.  However, you can mark it as a garbage dump zone for dwarves to, well, dump garbage into.

Yeah, but would they dump rotting stuff/withered plants into it? AFAIK, a garbage zone doesn't take those things, only the things you mark for dumping. Right?

o->r

sets the orders for which refuse dwarves save in refuse piles and which kinds they automatically dump (in garbage zones). i generally only keep corpses (in an outdoor refuse pile) and bones/shells/fresh hides in an indoor one

also, in order to get dwarves to throw garbage off an edge, you designate the floor tiles adjacent to the hole as a dump zone.

Alright, that helps alot, thanks.

I was just getting sick of having this huge refuse stockpile in my courtyard. It's just ugly. D:

I go for something like this

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Where the middle is things that will generate miasma, and the outer ring is things that will not (bones, skulls, shells).

Miasma doesn't spread on the diagonal. This might be an exploit. D:
