my prevention to cave adaption is to put the barracks/flop-house in a constructed building outside.which can only be entered through cave tunnel from the main fort. also putting the well outside which is connected in the same manner helps as thats an instant meeting area.

for times when all my dwarves have to be indoors, I have a decomissioned emergency well ready to be activated and a room full of beds
waiting behind a locked door.

I also try to build tunnel entrance outdoor stone homes as well for all the dwarves that need to go outside (i like masons :P) some don't ever need to leave the main fort, like the plump helmet farmers and smelter so they just get a room indoors.

I use a large meeting hall. The entire area is zoned to be a meeting area, but the center of the hall is channeled out so that its exposed to sunlight.

Thus, idle dwarves will spend time in sunlight, but should I order all dwarves inside, they will move from the center of the meeting hall to near the walls, which is still dark.

It's not the light. It's the nauseating fresh air

So, you have the next level down projected with images of trodden-in vomit?
Yuck.

On a related note, my obsessive collecting of every last item goblins drop makes my dwarves end up wearing shoes covered in blood, mud, and vomit.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

It'll look like that for a while, since it takes time to burn the cave adaptation out of the dwarves.  In a season or two though, you'll really notice a drop in the volume of vomit, and easily within three seasons - a year at most - your dwarves won't be puking anymore.

I don't suppose there's a way to get the dwarves with the cleaning labor to clean up vomit is there? (it's odd that they'll waste all kinds of time 'cleaning' archery targets to no apparent effect but happily traipse past pools of vomit)

Unfortunately, dwarves will never clean any messes in areas designated as 'outside'.
The best you can do is wait for the vomit/blood to disappear after a month or so.
(Or you can flood the area if it really is a bother).

Messes outside are cleaned up when the season changes.
