Re: Zefie Fortress: Nobles . . . Now with Map [Community]
« Reply #45 on: July 29, 2008, 09:48:43 am »

Zulban was starting to get overwhelmed. Although he could usually handle stress, he felt that these nobles were just too much. At first, it had just been the dungeon master. Goden really wasn’t even that bad. He had professed to sharing most of Boltcraft’s disdain for the nobility. He pledged his support to the war effort wholeheartedly. Zulban guessed that he must be quite skilled at making bars by now. Maybe even proficient. Goden had told Boltcraft that he was required by the government of the Gilded Diamonds to have relatively good rooms. These had been prepared ahead of time, there was no problem.
Then the other bloodsu, Nobles had arrived. That tax collector, demanding that the normal zefie policy of ‘from each according to ability, to each according to need,’ be replaced with capitalism. PAH. Zulban had tried to be welcoming. Building and running all three shops himself, but his heart was not in it. He had only bothered to stock one of his stores. Then there was that hammerer. He seemed so cold and calculating. Like a snake. Zulban knew that, in the event of a fight, Atis would kick his fuzzy ass to Nist and back, but they couldn’t do that, right? Then there was the baroness and baron consort, he had heard bad things about them, but they hadn’t been too bad, up to this point.
All of the new nobles had demanded very good places to live. Goden and Zulban had found a pretty little loophole in the rulebook. The nobles were crammed into one super luxurious room. They had complained, but were quickly amazed by the lavish accommodations. Snoopicus took an extra bed there too, ‘just to keep an eye on ‘em.’ Although it seems that he was recently evicted. There was a shortage of bone bolts too.
The rulebook. 764 pages of pure hell. It detailed every rule and procedure for running a fortress. Their first noble, the dungeon master Goden had brought three copies. Goden did, of course, keep his own copy. The main administrators, Warthog and Zulban had received one each as a ‘gift’ from the king of the gilded diamonds himself. Goden had an office and it never left his desk. Warthog had been given one, but its current location was unknown. It was hoped that Warthog had left it in his board room as opposed to dropping it in his forge. Zulban had been doing his best to read through his entire copy. Every night, lying in bed, Zulban would try to read at least 26 pages. However, he read by candlelight. In retrospect, he should have used a sturdier candle holder. It was a good thing that zefies were fire resistant.

Although most of the important people of Boltcraft were not in attendance, Warthog and the snipers had gotten some respected zefies into Zulban’s office. Representing the armed forces were Atis and Rawr. The entire regular sniper core was there, Zak, Mirza, Foxtrot, and their leader, Snoopicus. Inod  Searchpage, now taking over bone-carving duties was their, along with the clothes maker, Rith. Kirkost the injured knight and miner had been talking (right) with Zulban and stayed for the meeting. Ral Roughdimpled, the cook had been found making a midnight crumpet. He came along as well. Then there was Warthog and (obviously) Zulban.
Zulban looked around at the assembled zefies. Did he need a bigger office too? The board room would have been better, but he supposed that Warthog wouldn’t like his office occupied like that. Zulban resigned to ask Kirkost to design and build a meeting room (again). Zulban started talking,
“Zefies of Boltcraft, you have all been called here because we have a bit of a problem. Our new nobles have made several ‘mandates’ for us to fulfill. First of all, I’m not really sure what else to say, we need information on this entire process. Warthog, your book is in your office, right?”
“Possibly,” a glare, “Maybe, Probably?” More glaring, “Uhhh, yes?”
“Foxtrot, I’d like you to go to Warthog’s office and get his rulebook, okay? Zak, you have some skill at stealth, right? Go and wake up Dungeon Master Goden. Goden has much more experience in this then any of us. Don’t wake up any of the other nobles.”
The snipers moved off on the assignments. Both were novice ambushers, but went carefully. Zulban tried to explain the situation to the others, “Several of the nobles have said that we must produce their favorite items. Apparently, it’s one of their rights. I doubt that any of you have noticed, but I have been giving out mandates for a while now. I don’t have a choice, I have to as mayor. Goden will probably be able to explain better.”
Demurely blinking, Inod asked, “What you’re saying is that these nobles, who don’t do anything productive are telling us what to do? We  have plenty of bored refugees, can we tell one to do whatever they say?”
Rith, as fiery as ever, interjected, “But that’s just not right. Many of the refugees are bored, but very few can’t find anything to do. There are more than enough hauling tasks to do around here. Why, my very own workshop is so over crowded right now that I work a lot slower than I could in fact . . .”
Ral interrupted at this point, to everyone’s relief (except Rawr, who had drifted off to sleep). “Inod’s solution is not perfect, and I agree that the ethics of it aren’t to clear, but I have to say that we should try to get along with the nobles for now. It’s a tax on our workforce, but it shouldn’t be that big of a deal, right?”
Warthog replied, “That’s the thing, it is. We have four mandates total here. The Baroness doesn’t want us to export leather armor. That’s no problem at all. Although, several people are agitating for us to get away from using it at all, we lose nothing from holding on to it for a bit longer. Her husband is demanding for us to construct three crowns. It’s a bit strange, but no big deal. Unib and Z-Carver will find the instruction in their respective shops tomorrow morning. In a pinch, I suppose that you could build them too, Inod.”
Zulban took off from their, “I have an active mandate as well. It is for two copper items. It’s a pointless mandate really, as we produce a large number of copper bars and the weapon smith had been practicing by making copper bolts. The last mandate is the worrisome one. The tax collector want a pig iron item.”
Atis jumped into the fray, bumping Rawr in the process, “But you can’t build anything with bloody pig iron, it is useless for anything except to make steel bars. Would making steel bars count for it? This might not be so bad actually. Me and my soldiers would really like some better equipment, especially shields. No offense to Imush, the legendary Leatherworker, but a groundhog skin can only stop so much.”
The debate soon drifted off into the steel industry and then into traps. After several minutes, Foxtrot came into the room. He quickly moved behind Warthog and whispered, “You were using the rule book to balance your green glass statue, I couldn’t get it out without tipping the thing. After the meeting, Zax and I will move the statue out of the way and retrieve it, neh?”
Then, resplendent in several differently colored (clashing) cloaks, Goden Flickerhatchets strode in. The heavy book was held in a strong and very tough fuzz and Zax followed closely behind.

I now have an actual plan on where to go with this story! And I already have a design for the sequel! I’ll be going on a mini-vacation in about 6 hours, so I won’t be able to post. I will, however have my laptop and I plan to do a fair bit of typing. I’ll also have my phone, expect me to check the forums several times a day, so feel free to post questions, comments, suggestions, adoration, flames, smiles, or to claim a character.

Now, if you excuse me, I sorta got to pack. And sleep.

Ha ha ha. Bravo.

For the stuff that seems to be accumulating in the Forge, do you have weapon and armor stockpiles? With bins? Are the items owned (and thus not marked for hauling)?

Rawr seemed to be in a bad mood. “Why the hell aren’t you idiots in armor? Did you hear that being members of the Fortress Guard would be easy?  No work? YOU’RE WRONG! Prepare to go through boot camp. This is a fortress! Every zefie in Boltcraft WILL know his or her way around the axe. In the event of an emergency, be it goblin or natural disaster, there will be discipline and work ethic and combat ability ready no matter where in the fort. This is important. The safety of everyone that you know is now in your hands. So, answer me this, where is your armor, hasn’t it been issued it to you yet? LIKOT!!”
The spear using quartermaster carefully peeked around the armory entrance. Such a nice nap interrupted. “Yes Rawr?”
“Have you given these recruits their armor yet?”
“Oops. You guys, follow me.” The new guards were ushered into Likot’s armory. “Grab whatever armor around here that fits. Any thing that has a red ‘M’ on it is not for your use. Or anyone’s actually. You know, I could order you guys to haul all this goblin crap to the forge level and save zefies who actually work some time.”
Rawr responded in almost a growl, “I think that you should get back to organizing this cluster, Steelcrystal.”

After several minutes of fumbling around the bins and stacks, Rawr looked over his new five person ‘class.’ For some strange reason, they were mostly outfitted in a motley assortment of leather stuff. A lot of it was very high quality, but no matter how good Imush was, he couldn’t beat basic iron armor. Rawr supposed that they thought that comfort was more important than safety. However, a injured spine was not very comfortable at all.
Nor was being torn apart by goblins. Although, if they ever had to fight the green menace, Rawr would already be dead, wouldn’t he? The thought gave him some comfort. Reservists would never be committed to action before the Champions; no one could stand up to the seven champions of Boltcraft, right? Then again, if they were overwhelmed, Rawr would want his charges to kill some goblins to keep him company in hell. So, how well they could fight was still important.
The new recruits voted leader, Bembul, spoke up, “Sir? Are we going to be issued weapons?”
Moving over to a bin in the corner of the barracks, Rawr pulled out a steel shield. It was really a nice bit of armor, exceptional in quality and menacing with spikes of turtle shell. As much a weapon as armor. The sergeant said simply, “Catch. And I’m not a ‘sir,’ I’m a sarge.”
Noting their looks of discontentment with their ‘weapons,’ Rawr calmly put down his battle axe and shield and pulled out another shield from the bin. Rawr quickly and surely belted the shield on. It was similar to the spiked ones that the recruits had been issued, but instead of spikes, its shell was merely decoration. “Go over in the armory, recruits. Grab whatever M-marked weapons you want, and get over here on the double.”
The five recruits quickly returned with a rag-tag assortment of goblin crap. Two of them carried scourges. One had found a scimitar. Someone hefted a great-axe. Bembul stood slightly in front and held a halberd. Rawr barked out his command, “Now attack me!”
The recruits did, of course, nothing of the sort. In a flash, Degul Sabreproblem saw the turtle decorated steel. Then he felt it. Reeling slightly, the recruit tried to recover from the shield bash. In his surprise, Degul managed to stutter out, “Wwwhhyy?”
   Rawr only shouted, “Defend yourselves!”
Reacting faster than the rest, an agile lasher tried to scoot back so that she could lash Rawr. She was agile and fast, but Rawr was, obviously, faster. She was never even able to see what Rawr had done, she just saw the world spin, and then the barracks room ceiling. Seeing his friend taken down with a sweep, Urist, carrying a great axe moved in to attack.  It was a heavy blow; Rawr caught it squarely on his shield. He shoved the axe to the side, and knocked Urist out with a blow to the face.
Sabreproblem got to his feet while Bembul yelled, “Attack as a group!”
The remaining lasher tried to whip Rawr, but was in too close. Rawr grabbed the handle and flung it, wielder and all, into Bembul. The zefie had his Halberd charge interrupted forcefully, and they both tumbled to the ground.
Sabreproblem looked alarmed. He hefted his scimitar and thought desperately. He snatched up another shield and faced Rawr. The two stared each other down. Rawr tried to close, but whenever he did, Degul kept him at a distance and kept Rawr on the defensive. Even if Rawr got through the sword, Degul always had his shield ready. Rawr drew back.
Quick as a flash, Rawr threw the shield. It knocked Degul’s lower fuzz out from underneath him. The scimitar and shield clattered as they hit the floor.
Rawr muttered under his breath, “They’ll do.”

Zulban noticed with a bit of chagrin that Goden waited for his approval to start talking. He had so much responsibility. When the dungeon keeper started to talk, it was clear that public speaking was a skill of his. Goden strode to the front of the office and spoke in a loud, clear voice, “I’m sure that some of you don’t understand the whole ‘mandate’ system. The government of the Gilded Diamonds uses the mandate system to insure that proper production goals are met for settlements. Several types of noble class are required to make regular mandates. The ones that we have to deal with are, right now, the Baroness,” Goden’s speaking was interrupted by several mutters from the assembled zefies. “the Baron Consort, the Tax Collector, and Zulban the Mayor.”
Snoopicus took this opportunity to speak up, “Since when was Zulban made any demands from us? There has never been anything that we had to do special for him, I would have heard.”
Zulban fielded the question, “I am required to make a relatively large number of mandates. However, I only mandate copper items and picks. Neither of these are a big deal, as we build lots of them and none of them are big export items.”
“Is that why Likot is always complaining about having to sort 53 and a half copper picks?” Zak asked.
Atis came down hard, “Likot has more than enough space to hold all of the war material several times over. He is just too lazy to move the second rate stuff to the backup storage area. I think I found the sniper and recruits’ job for tomorrow . . . Sorry, you can continue now Goden.”
“No problem. Frank talk is really a break from damn noble bullshit . . . It must be getting to me, I actually felt a twinge when I swore. Bloody hell. Digress   ing, Zulban is obviously the easiest of our mandating nobles to deal with. We have a hell of a lot of copper, and making picks is good practice for the smiths anyway.”
“The Baron Consort has mandated making a couple of crowns. This is not a big deal. Our stone crafters will make him some of the most exceptional crowns that he has ever seen. Although I will admit that it is sort of disquieting. A Baron Consort asking us to make crowns? I wouldn’t put it past the Baroness to make a move on the throne either. No one much likes the king right now. If revolution started that would put Boltcraft in a tricky position though, we’d almost certainly end up in the middle of the resulting civil war. Not that I’d guess our nobles will be trying anything in the near future, although it might be a good idea to prepare know. Wait, have I been rambling? Back to the matter of hand then.
“Our very own Baroness asked for leather armor, huh? I’d imagine that that project is already done now. On my way here, I found Imush wandering about, bored. He asked if I could get him something to do, so I asked him to go about his work. I hope that I didn’t overstep my authority?”
Zulban reassured the Dungeon Master, “Not at all Goden. Please continue with your assessment.”
Goden continued, “The Tax Collector is our current problem. He is asking for a pair of pig iron items. I have a bit of training with metal, so I know that this will be a problem. Pig iron is completely unsuitable for making any normal construction, with the exception of steel bars. We run into a catch-24 . . .”
   Mirza interrupted “22”
   “Huh?”
“It’s catch-22, not catch-24. It’s the name of a book, I happen to have a copy, I could run to my room and grab it if you’d like. It’s quite interesting; the plot revolves around . . .”
Snoopicus carefully kicked the sniper, who cried, “Ow! What the blinking hell was that for!?”
“You were interrupting you undisciplined son of a three legged . . .”
Atis signaled to Rawr who carefully smacked them both. The commander then warned, “Not another peep out of either of you. Else you can, ummm . . . “
Rawr piped up, “Move all of the rocks out of Trade Depot?”
Zak suggested, “Put me in charge now?”
Inod recommended, “Clean and polish my bedroom?”
Rith came up with an idea, “Wash . . .”
Atis, who was quite annoyed by now yelled, “ENOUGH!! LET GODEN CONTINUE!!”
Mirza muttered, “It wouldn’t be a problem if everyone here read more . . .”
Atis spoke firmly and with conviction, “Mirza, you are dismissed. On your way out, find someone else important and tell them to come here. Move.”
   “Yes sir.”
Mirza left promptly and quietly. In an undertone, Zulban asked Atis, “Weren’t you a little bit harsh there?”
Atis’ response was quite quiet, “Discipline is my area of command Zulban. If you have a problem, relieve me from duty.”
Foxtrot wondered how a goofy situation could become so serious so fast. There was a deadly pause. Rawr risked having his head bit off to say, “Let’s just continue with the meeting now.”
Woodswalker and Razor walked in, a bit shyly. They had apparently been sharpening their axes together when Mirza had found them. After a quick update on the situation, the legendary carpenter and soldier sat down to listen.
Goden, slightly off his stride, continued, “If we were to make steel bars out of our imported pig iron it would not be a pig iron item, it would be a bar, made of steel. Therefore, the only thing that we can do is to make some pig iron bars. I’m not positive, Warthog, how do you go about making pig iron?”
The record keeper responded  after a pause, “To make pig iron bars, one has to carefully melt iron, which we have plenty of. There has to be flux added to the molten iron. We don’t have any native flux here, but we did import some. It should be lying around somewhere, if a miner didn’t turn it into a table already. The big problem is the coal. You have to use refined coal to finish the pigification process. We have no coal whatsoever. Additionally, I doubt that any of the caravans would be bringing coal. We could ask, but we don’t have time to wait a year and a half. I’m not sure what we can do to make pig iron or any items of it. We would need coal to do anything.”
Woodswalker whispered something to Razor. Razor promptly spoke up, “Woodswalker says that you can refine wood enough to get charcoal that is the equal of any coal. I concur.”
Goden, getting a bit of excited, said, “How do we go about doing it?
Woodswalker said, “I’m not actually sure. I have at least some extra wood right now. It would probably be better used to make bins, but if pleasing the tax collector is important, I could probably get it right with a bit of experimentation. Give me a couple days.”
Zulban summed it up, “We should be able to meet all the demands. However, we have a limited supply of flux which we would like to keep for other uses, namely useful steel. It isn’t perfect for us, but we can make do. Warthog, you will be the liaison between Woodswalker and the metal department. I’d like the pig iron done as soon as possible. Goden, do you think that you could give me some advice for dealing with the nobles later?”

There we have it, pretty much the only positive things I did on my mini-vacation. Although I also have gotten a system for draining the flooded portions of the fortress. There are 2.5 iron veins there. I don’t want to do any more exploratory digging. HFS you know. I think that there was supposed to be chalk somewhere, but I don’t want to look for it for the same reason. I added our new member and Zak is now named properly. For the record, I blame k and x looking very similar on my cell phone.

I figure that I'll alternate the recruit stories with noble (main plot) stories.

Would anyone like this to be continued? I'm still playing the fort (probably my most sucsessful one yet) and some fun stuff has happened.

BTW Everyone is legenday with the exceptions of Mirza, Zak, and Foxtrot, who are all heros.

Snoopicus is using two artifacts, and Atis got himself a rose gold buckler and has a fancy, long name.

I also have some fun ideas for the sequeal (s). . .

PS ZOMBIE ZEFIE THREAD!

Keep going with this one first, PLEASE!

I want to know what happens to my character after all. Is it me or does every game I join shutdown or becomes dead?
