Think of what high-tech weapons could effect.

The -Adamantine Gauss Round- hits you in the head!
It is perforated!
You have been struck down. [DONE]

Psh, stagnancy.  Imagine if cavemen had stuck to the original format.

Technically:

"Fr srs".

In spirit:

Why is it that piercing and slashing weapons, such as arrows and swords, are capable of producing broken (but not badly cut/pierced) and mangled wounds, when those seem to be the domain of other weapons (for example; hammers break bones, and claws rip and mangle).

A yellow wound doesn't necessarily have to mean that the bone itself is snapped in twain, it could be a damaged muscle, a (relatively) minor fracture, or even critical nerve damage--basically, anything that would render the limb useless.

It makes perfect sense for swords to break bones.  Just imagine hitting something with a metal pipe.  Now imagine that the pipe happens to have sharp edges.

Sounds similar to the obsidian (not-quite-a)-sword.

I could see a well-sharpened Obsidian sword cutting, and imagine if it broke in you.

Historically, people who wore chainmail would often get broken bones instead of wounds from being slashed at. That's the disadvantage of flexible armor - it spreads the energy of the attack over a larger area, making it less dangerous, but   the blunt trauma can still damage you. However, broken bones do not mean instant death, usually(well...unless it's the head, neck or the ribs in some cases), and setting a bone can be easier than closing a massive bleeding wound.

I didn't know there were historical examples of chainmail prostitution.

If you're cringing out of poor grammar, it's correct.  Effect can also be a verb meaning "To bring about"  I was hoping someone would tell me it's "affect" so I could respond with:

The grammar trap clamps down upon your right leg!
It flies off in a bloody arc!
You have been struck down. [DONE]

You fail at both anatomy and DF tags at once.
