Another vote for PM notification, I just had a somewhat time sensitive post rot in my profile page for three days before I noticed it.  Sure it mails my gmail when I receive one but I don't check my email very often either.

I also love that little mini version of the thread when you are writing new posts.  It has been incredibly helpful during the battle of the gods for copying over that massive map.  I would like it if it would show up when editing a message too though.

Oh, bring on the update! I'm sure all annoying features could be disabled, and I crave "new post in thread you posted in" notifications. Also, I don't think avatars would be that big of a problem - this is a very civilized community. And the new security features will most certainly come in handy as DF grows in fame and renown.

Two small annotations:
1. We need PM notification as seen above.
2. NO CODE TAGS IN SIGNATURES.
They can horribly break the forum if used incorrectly.  At least limit the length of a line in [CODE ] to like 40-50 characters, so that this won't happen:
code:
This messes up the forums since they don't
(the N in don't is the 40th character incidentally) automatically line-break when in code tags.
I'm just doing this to show why this needs to change, not trying to get anybody mad at me.

Note that I line-broke it so it won't kill the thread too bad..  Leads to a lot of horizontal scrolling for those in lower resolutions and/or don't use their browser maximized.
A forty-character-per-line limit would be fine if not even less.

No worries. The first is covered, and the second isn't a problem in SMF. CODE boxes will display a scrollbar if the content stretches out too long.

I think we'll need some of the proficient pixel artists here, to create custom dwarf smileys. If there's anything I can't stand, it's the oversized, excessively standing out smileys in most of the modern forums.

Can't remember who was working on it but there was a Giant tileset in progress something like 64 x 64... could always go that route with whomever's permission to reuse the tiles.

Edit:
Found it. Mike Mayday was working on the one I was thinking of.
This thread.
And yes it was based off another tile set before that, DR's iirc.
