Single class mages were down-right useless in BG1 (apart from abusing summons). BG2 improved them much more and I think they're in a rather comfortable spot there, having a mandatory spot in the party. The "wizard duels" helped to enforce a varied spellbook which gave the sorc some downsides. However in BGII the sorc's greatest weakness is the lack of dual/multi classing.
In BG1 it was better to just take some archers and mow everything down ignoring mages completely. They did get better at the higher levels but a fighter/thief archer with some wands still did a much better job than any mage in BG1 from my experience.

And that was the last time Archers were useful in a RPG outside of Tactics Ogre... ever again.

One thing that has caused me great hassle is the fact that the intel driver on my laptop can't run the game properly.
