Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition
« on: August 13, 2012, 05:13:13 pm »

Old thread is here. I figured it was old enough to not be worth necroing.

Website for the game is here.

I'm going to ask people to avoid spoilers about the plotlines of the game - It came out a long time ago, and there are likely quite a few people on this forum that haven't had experience with the original.

I'm feeling really happy about this. The price is a lot lower than new games coming out these days, and they had more added content than I expected - the black pits section looks to be comparable in length to Durlag's Tower alone, and the other stuff just adds. The new characters could go either way - I'm a bit concerned about having a low-level monk given to the player, it seems like something that could cause a lot of irritation to some players.

The biggest thing that I'm excited about is the revival of the modding scene. When the original came out it spawned some absolutely incredible mods, and I'm hoping this version will do the same. With the removial of the hard cape and making the UI data-driven, the possibilities have expanded enormously, and the developers are really keen to see the modding scene flourish, which bodes extremely well.

Also, how does Bay12 feel about giving this enhanced multiplayer a go and doing a group playthrough/let's play once it comes out?

I plan on buying it the second it gets put in a reasonably close store. I'd also be down for multi player sessions, though I suspect we'd all be wizards. Also, hears to hoping you can selectively turn off party member dialogue. I loved Minsc and that one other dude, but Imoen had the sort of voice that got one considering a Van Gogh.

Direct Download only, not a physical copy unless I'm mistaken.

I kept trying to play the original with EasyTutu, but never could get far before getting frustrated/bored. It seemed so epic, but 2nd Ed rules in a computer game with very little explanation to help out just sucked for me. Of course, it's been years. So I'd be pretty down for a multiplayer Bay12 game in it, since I'll probably suck it up and get it to try once again.

Beamdog only. I haven't used the service but it seems to be quite a decent one. The only problem is I'm not a fan of having to spread my collection across many digital distributors so I usually stick to the big three, Steam, Gamer's Gate and GOG.

I would so be up for MP. I have a bg-bg2 playthrough going at the moment, with a dualled kensai mage with scimitars. currently in the undercity iirc.

I love mages but I'd be willing to play other stuff too.

I tried playing some similar games too, like NWN and IWD, but the only one i truly fell in love with was BG.

I haven't played this game in years. I remember getting it when it first came out, I was a teenager at the time. I remember getting all my friends to buy it so we could play it multiplayer. We had all sorts of problems with it, probably stemming mostly from the crappy internet we all had back then (56k modem).

The bad thing about the multiplayer is you miss out on having the NPCs though. The NPC dialog and interactions is one of the best parts of the series.

Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes!

I remember playing a Fighter/Thief, and another guy in the party was pure thief, and we'd both sneak in and backstab stuff.

I never did really like thieves, only really used them for their remove traps and open locks. I'd much rather roll with Fighter-Cleric-Mage-Mage-Mage-Mage.

Magic Missiles EVERYWHAR! Even better in BG1 when you can get quadruple level 1 spells with dual ring of wizardry.

Also I really like Imp. Haste + Melf's Minute Meteors for ridiculous attack speed. Plus MMM is magical enough to deal with the magic weapons requirement of most monsters.

The multiplayer experience is something that they've been extremely heavily reworking, it was one of if not their biggest priorities. The original multiplayer was pretty buggy from what I can make out (I don't have any first hand experience of it), but that's been rectified.

From what I've been able to pick up, it was possible to use the original NPCs in your multiplayer game, but you wouldn't have the same customisation options, and each PC could only be controlled by one person at a time.

This is BG1, so mages are a lot less powerful than in the sequel and for most situaitons in the early game they can be a liability. Of course, this is bay12, so I wouldn't be surprised to see lots of people opting for mages, monks and other classes which are pretty useless at low levels.

Unfortunately, there were only two rings of wizardy in BG1, so you could only load up on character with a dozen magic missilies. I did discover a bug about that though; My mage character wore both rings in BG1, and memorized all magic missiles. When I imported him into BG2, I was able to keep the same number of magic missiles memorized, far over the limit, as long as I did not try to change the first level spells.

Besides, with all the classes and kits available, I'm sure we can branch out a bit from solid mages. We could go to such diverse lengths as kensai/mage, cleric/mage or even, god forbid, sorceror.

Ah, level 1 mages. Cast your magic missile for 1d4+1 then... boldly charge with your dagger and 4 HP.

Plus you won't get fun spells like cloud kill and sunfire until the game's almost over.

Still, thief/mages are hilariously fun and always worth playing.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Ah, yeah. Of course its only BG1, so a lot of stuff isnt as powerful as it is as in later levels.

Kensai mage needs to dual class at 9 or 13 really, which is out of the scope of bg1 sadly.

I hate sorcerors too, i like to have more variety in spells.

Having used Aerie and Viconia in BG2, I much prefer just the cleric - heavy armour is just too damn good when you combine it with the cleric's combat buffs.

Hopefully they rebalance missile weapons though, because not only do they suck in general but bows are so much better than crossbows that its not worth taking them...

ninja'd: yeah thats why you take kensai mage, by the time you dual class you can get enough xp to zoom up the levels super quick

Well, Crossbows suck in the ADnD PnP rules as well. So they'll probably continue to suck. :D
Unless there were some optional rules in one of the later supplements and they decide to use those rules.

Kensai/Thief was pretty overpowered. You can wear any armor, and that was the main foil to being a Kensai. Not to mention bothering to backstab, if you felt like it.
