Pretty psyched for this and it's gotten me back into the other D&D games (unfortunately a few weeks before the GOG.com sale... grr). I'm pretty sure I've thoroughly explored my options, but I'm looking for any D&D games based on 3.5 rules that aren't NWN2 or Icewind Dale 2 (already played them, they got me realizing I like the 3.5 edition rules/character customization the most). Are there any? Alternatively other games in that style with the similarly complex character creation options would be great.
The original NWN is based on 3.5 rules.

I should note, NWN is based on 3.0 rules and the expansions bring it up to 3.5. Also, the first NWN is an excellent game and very worth playing.

im thinking about picking up planescape:torment, since i never played it but i hear good things about it.

Absolutely, entirely loved Torment.  It's probably still my top game of all time, and one of the only games that I have actually completed more than once, playing through from start to finish.

Ghills is right that the world is very dark - without spoiling anything (because it's the very beginning of the game), your character wakes up in a mortuary.  As in, on a slab in the mortuary.  Surrounded by corpses.  And a talking skull.

It's also one of the text-heavier games I've played - and that's a good thing, in my book (no pun intended).  At times you feel like you're taking part in one of those old Choose Your Own Adventure novels, but an incredibly well-written one with a very dark, but also very sympathetic/empathetic storyline.

I think generally you get the most out of the game if you play through as a high intelligence/wisdom character (so, probably a mage type), but that's not a major stipulation and you can play through as a brain-dead, ham-fisted simpleton if that takes your fancy.  The dialogue will recognise that as well.  ;)

Overall: can't recommend it highly enough.  It's on GoG and, in fact, is their all-time top seller.  All-time.  Top seller.  And it's $7.

Yeah, NWN had the most amazing modding and DM'ing abilities. For a game that is currently cheap-as-chips, I still recommend getting it due to the massive amount of free content available for it.

I'm pretty sure there's still some multiplayer servers running with semi-active DMs about, which is pretty impressive considering the age of the game. The engine is a bit clunky, but so very well thought out for long term use.

I hope BG:EE comes out pretty soon. I was going to get it as a birthday present for myself. :-(
So I quit my shitty job instead, which made me pretty happy anyway. Now I've got so much free time on my hands, I'll be able to play some games again :-)

I went ahead and installed them again cause you guys reminded me.  Just look at what you made me have to figure out!!!

(I totally make help files after completing any difficult install in case I need them later.  Given that the 4in1 pack I have is like the most ornery version possible, I figured sharing might help someone else.)

How to merge Baldur's Gate 4in1 pack on Windows 7 64 Bit, even though everything is terribly broken in the 4in1 pack:  (In order to make this work, I had to merge the information of no less than 6 separate fixes....)
NOTE: Make sure all installs are custom and set to maximum or full.
1. Install BG1 (Make a new folder on the C drive, NOT in program files or program files x86)
2. Install TOSC
3. Install BG2 (Make a new folder on the C drive separate from the one for BG1, NOT in program files or program files x86)
4. Install TOB
5. REMOVE ALL DISKS
6. Install patches:
BGTalesUS5512
BGII-ThroneofBhaal_Patch_26498_ENGLISH
BGII-ThroneofBhaal_Patch_26499_BETA
7. Set BGMain.exe in BG II main folder to run as administrator
8. Extract Ascension64-BGT-WeiDU-1.15, copy all of these files into the primary BG II folder.  (AKA Baldur's Gate Triology)
9. Perform this:  (Left intact to credit the source)

here we go:
-Open the folder where the game is installed.
  1. open the folder "Data" and create 2 folders : "Data" and "Movies"
  2. go back to the root-folder of the game
     --   move all files from the folder "...CD2\Data\" to the newly created  "...\Baldurs Gate\Data\Data\"
     --   move all files from the folder "...CD2\Movies\" to the newly created "...\Baldurs Gate\Data\Movies\"
  3. repeat the procedure with the content of CD3,CD4 and CD5
      (dont create other folders for these CDs..all must be copied in the same folders as in step 2)
  4. delete the folders: CD2->CD5 from the root game-folder. If a window opens up asking to replace a similar file, just ignore it.
         (some files have duplicates in all original CD folders.)
 -last step:
      1. open the "baldur.ini" file located inside the root game-folder (its the configuration file)
        - under the section [Alias] make these changes.It should look like this:
              (replace the highlighted with your installation path and save the file)
[Alias]
HD0:=D:\32bit (x86)\Baldur's Gate II\           (Neo: This is the location of the main folder)
CD1:=D:\32bit (x86)\Baldur's Gate II\data\          (Neo: These are wherever your new data file is)
CD2:=D:\32bit (x86)\Baldur's Gate II\data\
CD3:=D:\32bit (x86)\Baldur's Gate II\data\
CD4:=D:\32bit (x86)\Baldur's Gate II\data\
CD5:=D:\32bit (x86)\Baldur's Gate II\data\
CD6:=D:\32bit (x86)\Baldur's Gate II\data\
                                                                 YES, for some reason a 6th CD is needed
     ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                                                                       HAVE FUN WITH THE GAME
---- Awake and Aware
**********************************************************************************
10.  Run setup-bgt.exe in the BG II folder, this should be self explanatory
11. Once it is done close it all out and then put the BG II TOB Disk in the drive
12.  Run the game from the now working BGMain.exe in the BG II main folder

Honestly I preferred NWN 2 and NWN 2: Mask of the Betrayer.  Seriously, MotB was one of the best epic (literally, your character goes above lvl 20) campaigns ever, with the best evil ending ever.  Not spoiling it.

I still need to get through the main campaign of NWN2 at some point. I'm just getting to the point where my characters are really starting to do some neat things and hold their own (level 8 or 9 I think, maybe 1/3-1/2 way through?). Do you use the same character in the expansions as you do in the original campaign?

I will say that Planescape Torment is a hopeless whirling vortex of depression.

It is probably what makes it hard for me to get into it. The entire game is pointless because everything sucks with no hope, light, or joy.

I've played REALLY depressing games before but they usually give you some shred of hope (Heck even the game that was about you dying and furthering your own death in order to gain some last shred of living before you go had more hope). Not Planescape Torment...

I did end up picking it up because people kept recommending it, so we'll see how far I get before the soul sucking depression kicks in. :D So far it doesn't bode super well that I got to the portal in the mortuary to where the person I used to know is supposed to be and then the game crashed. We'll see what happens when I try again.

Well my advice is

DON'T BUY IT!

Single player it works but multiplayer is still broken and badly broken.

Icewind Dale is for multiplayer. Baldur's Gate is much better singleplayer (although without stuff like the NPC project for BG1 it can be a little bland.)

Personally I'm pretty meh with the whole BG:EE edition. The fixes they did were top-notch and that's good. But I can't shake the feeling that I paid 20 dollars for what is basically a UI expansion/Beregost crash fix. I was really hoping this would be my "mod killer" so I wouldn't have to download 12 gb of mods to get BG to a really enjoyable state.
Sure I have to install less mods now but there's still a whole bunch of content they could've added. I understand that they had to sign a (stupidly) tight contract which included (stupidly) not being able to edit original character's dialogue (wtf WoTSC?) but still. I'm not seeing much evidence of there being more modding support which was one of their main selling points. Also waiting for that pre-order bonus ... anytime guys.

There was however a recent update with a hidden feature which is pretty cool. It wasn't in the patch notes or anything.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As a bonus here's Sarevok singing Barry White, which should really be the ending credits music for Baldur's Gate.

Sorcerers are better in Baldur's gate because the spells that make Wizards FAR supperior are not included. Divination which has been just the most broken spell type in Dungeons and dragons is actually the most throw away in Baldurs gate (at least if my friend is right).

You just don't need that much spell variety.

Single class mages were down-right useless in BG1 (apart from abusing summons). BG2 improved them much more and I think they're in a rather comfortable spot there, having a mandatory spot in the party. The "wizard duels" helped to enforce a varied spellbook which gave the sorc some downsides. However in BGII the sorc's greatest weakness is the lack of dual/multi classing.
In BG1 it was better to just take some archers and mow everything down ignoring mages completely. They did get better at the higher levels but a fighter/thief archer with some wands still did a much better job than any mage in BG1 from my experience.
