Clothing - A Pants-Optional Fortress?
« on: April 12, 2012, 02:00:43 am »

I know that a shirt, shoes, and trousers will keep my dwarves happy, but what other combinations are there?  In particular, can I get away with giving them all robes and shoes instead?  I like the idea of my fortress looking like some sort of subterranean warrior monastery.

Also, do dwarves get happy thoughts from owning lots of nice clothing?  In other words, is there any point to providing my minions with hoods, gloves, and socks?  Or does that just add to the item clutter and eventual FPS death of my fort?

I'm half-tempted to just give them all shoes, robes, and nothing else, followed by a report on whether or not they tantrum...

I actually don't know... and I don't know if many other people know either. Sounds like some serious science should be done here...

Agreed. Experiment, and report on your findings.

Something I've wondered for a while is waht effect if any dyed clothes have.

There's safe. Then there's unsafe. And then there's the average dwarf fort, which remains unrated because the OSHA inspector flatly refused to go anywhere within a dozen miles of the place.

I don't know about happy thoughts, but gloves might be useful if the dwarves have to haul items covered in deadly blood.

Dwarf Fortress- where a sudden mist that causes you to bleed from every orifice and drop dead is one of the better outcomes.

I think I read a report on the bug tracker that said robes don't compensate for lack of pants. Those mines can be pretty draughty.

Thongs might be what you want to replace pants with. You'll have to edit the raws so they're not foreign produce.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Robes don't replace pants.  You really need a piece of clothing marked for lower body.

I recall some 'nice acquisition' thoughts from earlier versions. I bet they still count.
OTOH, I haven't really paid attention to my clothing industry in a while (now that it actually matters! heh). Instead, I've just scrounged up replacement stuff from the goblins. Nothing's quite like a -troll fur cap-.

What about togas and dresses?  You might need to change togas to common in the entity file...

Dwarves always require clothing for their body, legs, and feet. Having a single robe (body) and shoes (feet) will not work as they will still need clothing that fits on their legs. Even if the robe covers the legs.
