Summer

So right at the beginning of the season, it started raining. The giant clouds of steam coming off of their bodies makes them even more horrifying, in my opinion.

13th Malachite, 604:

It seems that the military is getting quite a bit of practice in. On their fellow dwarves.

20th Malachite, 604:

We've discovered a cavern! Hopefully now we can get some trees growing in some of the clay we've dug now that spores have been released. It would be a whole lot safer then venturing outside for trees.

Unfortunately, there also seem to be some locals...

Our military is taking care of them right now.

30th Malachite, 604:

Funny thing about these military guys. It seems that the squad full of mostly new recruits have no fear and charge right at the ant-men-creatures, but when I sent the more experienced squad after some most of them ran away like little elves. Embarassing. I shall be sure to engrave an image of it so that they never get over the shame. Or maybe just some tower caps instead.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We've also discovered another cavern, and a deep pit!

Yeah, that's pretty deep.

9th Sandstone, 604:

No doubt because of all the damned ghosts around.

We really ought to make some coffins and slabs. Yes, slabs... Hmmm... Hehehe.

20th Sandstone, 604:

More migrants! We had to lower the gate for them once again, and once again, all the dwarves rushed outside. Oh well.

30th Timber, 604:

Yeah, opening the gates was a bad idea. We've been recieving near endless ambushes, thieves, and the like. At least the military is getting experience, one of them even has a lengthened name now! Killed about thirty different creatures.

The possessed fella also went berserk. A hammerdwarf dispatched him easily.

13th Moonstone, 604:

So, we never actually got the trade depot reconstructed. That wasn't really a problem during the spring and summer because the caravans didn't arrive due to the siege, but we just had to rush and get everything ready for the caravan from the mountainhome. Then the bastards unloaded, and right when they were done unloading, decided to head back without even getting a chance to trade. Whatever. I shall make an engraving showing my irritation. Or maybe of a human taming some tigers about 200 years ago.

There's also been some draltha bothering dwarves down in the caverns. I'll send the military after them.

15th Opal, 604:

The founder of the fort had locked himself in a workshop and began drawing images of rocks and... More rocks. I thought that the place had finally got to him, but he has just produced an amazing artifact, Roarstones the Toungue of Ringing...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, the caravan decided the best way to exit the fort was to go through the caverns.

...Alright then.

1st Granite, 605:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Alas, my year as the overseer of this fortress has ended! Right here, in the book, it says that I may only rule for one year and one year only! Oh, woe. I better do what it says though. This seems like a pretty powerful book, it's like gods have written in it. Gods watching our every move, laughing at our despair, sharing our experiences with other gods... Even controlling us! Am I even writing in this, or is it some other power?

Aaaanyway, I've completed my main goal, artifying the fortress. There are statues tastefully arranged in various parts of the fortress, and the grand sculpture room has been finished. Engraving's also going well, I've been very much watching over this part of the process, and I like how it turned out. So beautiful. I shall engrave an image of the joy I'm feeling right now. Or maybe of a nethercap.

I shall now throw this book in the middle of the dining room and run off to do some more engraving. So long, diary!

Notes for next overseer:

The lever to raise the bridge to the panic room also currently controls some of the cages in that room. I was planning to put some of the military in there to deal with the prisoners, but ran out of time. The prisoners are all disarmed.

The mayor is right in the middle of speaking with the outpost liaison.

All the clay that the miners are digging out is for growing trees.

That's pretty much it; :P

Edit:

1st of Granite
I wake from my mood, the overseer’s book lands in my lap. I look around muzzled from my possession.
What, the hell?
This place is a mess. Theirs stockpiles everywhere, bedrooms scattered hither and thither, the military is a screw up and half in hospital and, and. well. The icing on the cake is the fact we have a stair way right down into the caverns, which is a sure fire way of getting every single dwarf in this place killed faster than you can say DEADLY DUST SYNDROME, oh, and random useless hunks of rock “statues” and “art” everywhere!
Bloody Arty types.
First things first, seal off the cavern, get the dwarfs dead buried, the military reorganised and out of the hospital, get whatever is rotting in the food stockpile outside -oh no wait, its a dead dwarf, someone burry the poor sod please, i quite like my morning plump helmet without the smell and sight of a rotting dwarf to start things off- and re-arrange the farms from just plump helmet growing, since anything else listed to grow is guaranteed to be sparse and far between, never trust an artists to get you food.  No wonder I went into a trance, eat too many cold plump helmets and nothing else and it messes with your mind.
I decide to leave the digging projects for now. Let’s rip up the statues and get them placed propperly instead of in the way of cleaning this place up, seal the entrance, retrieve the gear from the sieges, and get some bloody marksdorf squads up and running.

2nd Granite

Caverns sealed off and the drawbridge raised, we are officially on lock down, though well let the liaison out, last thing we need is a nother bloody dead body. Now I need to wait until everyone’s idle from having everything cancelled. I don’t believe I would be able to stand it otherwise.  Repurposing some fools onto medical duty. This place is going to feel the WRATH OF KARAKZON THE FOUNDING DWARF and make no mistake, it shall be terrible.

Note: My dwarf realy realy dislikes messy organisation, and is dispareing at those who value art over getting everyone someplace to sleep and the millartery sorted. Wile hes willing to let efficiency slide to a degree, he cant stand a disorderly fortress when hes the one in charge. So be prepared, i may overhaul the entire insides and the millatery to something approaching coheirancy. The place is a mess. im so proud of this succesion game.
Ill do some dorfing when i get millatery sorted out, but that involves healing the buggers first so it make take a wile.

22nd Granite
noticing that alot of dwarves have infections, i order the construction of a soap industry temporeraly.  I also dedicate some of the space in the tree growing pastures to dwarven tombs. May the mushrooms take the dwarves back into the earth from wence we came. The memorical halls problems have been sortred and the dinning room has had its furniture finaly properly placed. A good portion of the fortress is now idle. I put the millatery off duty until i fix their squad deployment.
To keep them busy until im ready to move everything about, im ordering the starting wooden construction i built in my first reign to have a roof built.

11th of Slate
I’ve just started reorganising the military. Their now split up into several squads with the captain of the guard on his own. Whoever decided to give him a weapon must have been a few hairs short of a beard or sober at least? Each squad is specialised in one weaponry type, Hammer, mace, axe, spear or sword. I also remade the marks dwarf battalion. Whoever disbanded that needs their ears nailing on so they can hear why having those who can shoot stuff until it can’t fight back is a great idea when daemons set anything they touch on fire.
I’ll have to recruit more to fill the numbers, but now we have soap being made, we shouldn’t have problems concerning infections just as much. If the current 2 remaining bed ridden survive and the other infected live, I’ll have to check them all as if they were cattle for signs of weakness before drafting appropriate dwarves. Then ill implement the 2 in 3 man rotation scheme which will train them efficiently and allow them some time off so they don’t all go depressive maniacs on us. I heard a fair few dwarfs died here due to depression. Not that I blames them.

19th Slate
I have the new farm setup done, 8 5x10 plots let us have more diversity in our crops instead of the large 4 10x10 ones. The masons and craft shops have been dismantled entirely, along with the food preparation areas. I’ll move the food and booze prep shops near the farms, and put the workshops 2 z levels or so under the bedrooms so we don’t get our sleep disturbed. I’ll be re-organising the old military barracks in the clay area as a dorm for the time being, until I get the production centres sorted out. Ill move the stockpiles down near the workshops and with any luck, we should be far gone mainly from the clay zones before the year is up. Progress on roofing the wooden fort is under progress nicely. Switched to the rock salt blocks since we used up all the spare clay blocks.

24th Slate
MIGRANTS! Good lord. These guys have come to a place were the list of the dead is half that of the current population in just under 6 years. i pity them for being exiled here with the rest of us. I really do. NOW GET TO WORK!
The roof will hold a personal little monument.

The migrants:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Note: I’ll be doing some clean up of the blood etc etc so fps doesn’t suffer, this will also include lighting the outdoors on fire using hack DFLIQUIDS 1/7 magma, to burn the clothing and flammable trash left by kobolds/goblins. I’m setting my pop cap at 110 dwarfs so I don’t get any more migrants. I suggest others do the same, so we don’t have to turn migration back on until a few die off.

27th Slate
The captain of the guard beat a dwarf. Well I say beat. The horrid basterd cut off an arm, a leg, sliced the poor soul’s eyes and bruised the liver... drop the damn axe you basterd! For Armoks sake! NOW!
The ‘criminal’ tries to continue on as normal. If they survive ill make sure they get good compensation. As for the mayor. Well. Let’s just say he volunteered to be sacrificed. Him and his damned mittens, but I’ll have to wait, if I have time in another year in the future, I’ll make a temple to Armok and throw him in as the sanctifying sacrifice before we use the then prisoner goblins.
He’s been marked. Let it be known that I will not tolerate legal butchery wile I’m overseer!
1st Felsite: A woodcrafter moods.
I begin naming dwarfs their respected requested titles.
He claims his shop,
5th Felsite: I make a rudamentery and none-permanent prison. Itll keep the guard from killing more innocent bystanders with any luck. Ast the presser is somehow still alive. And the blindness seems to be wearing off, but Armok alone knows how the hell theyll see with a scar down the middle of their left eye. Thats just freaky.

-p.s. sorry for lack of screens, theirs not relay been much going on, just re-organisation mainly. I’ll let you know if anything happens proper. Though ast now can see. Not that hes capable of much any more.

Gamillim or Trustwisp, a highwood sceptor, decorated with llama wool and horse bone,
on the item is an image of dwarves in high wood, the dwarves are labouring, the artwork relates to the foundation of dreammine by the armoury of rewarding of the helms of infamy in the early spring of 601.
On the item is an image of an oak in rope reed fiber.

7200 dorf bucks. Not the most valuable, but its a nice call back to a simpler time. Wannazzaki has someone named after him in memory of his heroism. Shame the original didn’t stick around. I heard his ghost started being an overseer at one point. Weird. Flicking back and reading his chapters kind of gives me the willys.

14th, the elves arrive. Time for the yearly slaughter.
The doors are locked; the slaughter begins with their animals and then the elves themselves. Considering I only just cleaned the bloody place last month I’m slightly annoyed, but that’s the protocol of our civilisation as decreed by the monarch. Crusty peanut whose in with the axe squad got a kill with his shield on a yak.  And again on a donkey. Wannazzaki bites an elf’s finger off and cuts the bugger in half while still gnawing on it.
Crusty gets the last elf kill with his iron shield.

It is now summer, our stocks are still sky high, I could probably stay the entire year without re-engaging the food production line, and we have 4 bars of soap, which should be enough for any more scrapes we get into until the next siege or so. It’s around this time the liaison decides to bugger off finally. Progress is moving swiftly, the roof is mostly done, with the monument platform ready. I’m smelting platinum bars for a throne and statue, one for my quarters and one for the monument as a centrepiece. I’ve used some of the redundant statues lying about as well. I may put more on the roof as forms of gargoyles. Maybe the worse ones anyways. When it’s done ill build a stair way on the inside up onto the roof were they can access the gargoyles tower as ill call it. Then we can station Lookouts and I can generally hang out up their out of the mines once in a while. I think ill string a hammock up and have a few drinks while I’m at it. Of course I’ll also be keeping a loaded crossbow on hand for if I get bored to shoot at the local ogres, goblins, horrific beast or kobolds to pass the time.

-All who requested are now dwarfed-

Hemanite 14th
All the dead are now buried, and my quarters are being fitted. The tower continues unabated.
19th Malachite
The military is working efficiently now, sparring actively.
The production centres have been mostly moved, the tower is almost done, and a emergency drain has been placed in the fortress under the main breach. Other than that, I’m replacing some of the wooden structure with stone blocks to recycle some of the wood that went into its construction.
1st Galena
More migrants? I thought I told the liaison to lay off for a while. Whatever. Well take them and make them into hard working dwarves yet. We are at 117 dwarves. To compensate I order a lot of cheep poor housing to be dug out. It can be something temporary before proper rooms are made.
I built a mill house. Turns out this place has no wind what’s so ever. So ill have to replace it with a  pump, that way we get power and muscle building training. The migrants get attacked by an ogres. I rouse the military to march out and fight. The ogress has her head caved in. End of.
5th
Vabok mooded wile in the masons shop and then claimed it instantly.
13th Galena
The mooder starts a project. Looks like it’s made mainly of bones and rock salt. Prehistoric jerky anyone?

He made a rock salt throne called Ossekusen I.e. Council Helped at 20400 dorf bucks it’s rather neat.
I may dig out a council room for the fortress overseers of old and new to meet and discuss matters that need guidance. Not that I expect it to get much use but if we ever get the king here well have a legitimate place for him to hold court. I’ll use this artefact to be the seat of the current overseer.

12th of Limestone
I got bored. So I ordered a bath be constructed for the public dwarves. It may not get finished by time my stay in overseer post is done, but the basics will get done, I need to smooth everything and mass produce some bins for all this clutter that I plan on offloading on the dwarves caravan.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

23rd Sandstone
More migrants? This is the third lot of these losers this year! I’m running out of jobs for the buggers.
Oh an ambush. MILLATERY!
The concept lambs to the slaughter springs to mind. These poor buggers. The poor buggers whose going to damn well clog up the fortress as ghosts. Armok damnit.
17th Sandstone
The military engage the goblin foe. I can barely watch. It’s a weird shambles of a battle. Seems they didn’t have enough time training. One recruit bit it. Guard squad so I don’t much care. The rest will be lucky to get away with nothing more than major maiming. 4 were maimed in the battle. 2 of the migrants who came died, overall. Not that bad. But could be better. If these are the last migrants I will not be sending the boys out on such a mission again. They’ll have to come to us and get pin cushioned with bolts. Now get the lads inside so we can close the gate and bury our dead.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A forgotten beast with golden scales. Well, it can shimmer right where it is, the floor is staying in place.
In other news: imakuni the previous overseer is becoming a grand master engraver. How do I know? I don’t spend more than 5 minutes until he makes a bloody masterpiece in the barracks. This better cheer the buggers up. Last count is 10 of the buggers.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Stop drawing the bugger down in the caverns. I know you can’t see through floors. Damn you.
Crusty peanut suffered badly in the last fight, a fractured middle spine, bright side though, no nerve damage, got everything sorted though so. If he lives he lives. If he don’t he don’t. Here’s to crossed fingers etc.  He’s up and about though so alls good.
The merchants arrive. To a  blood stained hell hole we haven’t cleaned up yet... whatever. LOAD THE TRADE DEPORT YOU DEPROVATES.

23rd: we get an ambush walk in the front door, oh and the cages trap the leader.
Followed by another ambush squad with lashers. Ho boy.
One axe dwarf down and a large portion of the caravan guards dead. The bright side? We got the steel armour we can nick from the guards for ourselves now. Needless to say, when the sword dwarf Minkot arrives, a can of woopass is opened as the dwarf cuts them from groin to adams apple.

Remind me never to get on the bad side of them. I’m in the Gargoyle tower at this point, watching.
24th Timber.
Of course it wouldn’t be a real ambush series if their wasn’t a 4th damn squad with lashers to join in on the fun! Oh joy of joys. Someone pass me a crossbow wile I yell at the squads to swing round and save the poor civvies that went outside. Meanwhile some hoople head runs up to me to tell me a mooder has claimed a buggering carpenters shop. IM BUSY GO SHAVE YOUR TOENAILS!
ARGGH! STRESS!
Likot has distinguished himself in battle against the goblins. Taking on 3 lashers and living to tell the tale. The 4th group hasn’t caused any casualties. And our boys have lovely steel breastplates now. I almost feel bad about where they came from. Almost. Shame about losing another good dwarf, she had some pretty awesome scars too. Still, loot the dead, bury the unfortunate, nick the goblinite and dorfite, seal the bridge, and Armoks damn, I’m going to set the grass on fire in winter I swear it.

You know that feeling you get when you know someone’s making a fat profit off of you? That’s the one I always get when the traders come. Traded the majority of stuff for weapons and armour and bars of metal. Then offered 5k of goods to the capital. The loony started construction as soon as ide finished with the trade liaison.
It is 2nd of Moonstone. Winter is setting in and my time of overseer is running short.
Crusty peanuts has 7 kills and a title, along with a now fully functioning spine.
The delight of uttering. Now just because the dwarf swears allot doesn’t mean it has to be in the title, then again, what crusty was coming out with when we hauled them off the battlefield to get that spine sorted could make cave ogres run and hide.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

7th moonstone: artefact finished. We now have a legendary carpenter. Note to future overseers: keep them alive, masterwork beds make any dwarf happy.
The baths are coming along nicely and the trade has gone smoothly, 7k offerings and a tone of goblinite and elvenite traded for weapons and armour. Mainly bronze.
Oh and a stone crafter is throwing a tantrum because both their children died when they migrated.
Then proceeds to go beet up a clothier. Hmm. Come on Happyslap. –Weird name- roll with the punches... seems no casualties and just a bit of bruising. Until the guard impart a beating.

Today Rith manyoil went into melancholy. Why? He had a loving wife. A pet. He went off the deep end because he lost a pet...
I’m glad I never chose one. On another note I’m informed someone went FISHING in the baths. What?
13th moonstone:
Tantrumer died from a fist through the skull. Dwarven justice is served. Unfortunately.
Baths finished though. And I’ve finally got every dead dwarf in a coffin. When the merchants bugger off ill seal the gates and set fire to the outdoors to clean everything.
15th A military dorf, cross bower, throwing a tantrum now. Damnit people, stop going off the deep end. Other news: council room all but finished, engravers are just making things look nice and it shant be long till I move the dorm down to behind the barracks. After that ill need to construct the prison and well officially be all in the rock. I’ve designated our current lowest level on the central stairs as the prison area. Now to just let the engravers and miners get on with it –including me- and to get the bloody idiots to stop tantrumming. When this is all over I’m going up gargoyle tower for a snooze and a barrel of mead.  To pass the time for the masons I order a general tower base constructed for if anyone else wants to do something with it in future. We don’t need the outdoor area any more unless people really want above ground foodstuffs. The mayor decided to finally talk to the liaison.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Imakuni continues to be a show off engraver.
Of note that I’ve forgot to create is a archery range, but for now, I’m going to leave that for the next guy, since I’ve steadily made the bone crafters churn out bolts to up our stocks.
Vulkus has started to make masterpieces as well. Between them their a right pain in the announcements, make the place look nice though I have to admit. All that smoothing practice I made them do must have paid off. I hardly see the deformed cheese engravings common to most newbie’s these days.
2nd opal:
Liaisons buggerd off. Tower base is complete, a water reactor chamber is being built to power the millstone I made, just because I can mainly. If anyone wants to move it underground be my guest. I’m just bored now. Apart from the projects underway which will finish shortly, there’s nothing to do around here.
Chevex the weapon smith just became a miner apparently. Unfortunately I never got round to making the metal industry. I’m guessing that joy of dwarven mastery can go to the next overseer in charge. Hopefully they won’t end up putting a damn easy route straight to the caverns in! We do have forgotten beasts down there.

Shouldn’t be too hard if they don’t go for the magma though, the graveyard/fungal forests we’ve been making aren’t far off from being ready to produce a constant wood harvest.
20th: a muskox manages to starve itself on a field of fungus grass.
So what, even our bovines are depressives now?
28th Opal
Some random individual died from dehydration.
I have no idea how. Someone bury the poor bugger.
11th Obsidian.
I start work on an armoury, we need to move the armour, weapons and ammo mass stockpile inside from the inside platform I made, it could be made into a barracks in future I’m sure, but for now its holding the fortresses entire military supplies. Out of boredom I set up a small archery range in the bauxite tower base I started for future overseers. Not assigned yet until out bolt supplies are more than adequate. The drain is complete finally, took a while for the engravers to get round to it. But at least now I know if anyone tries to remove the wooden walls holding back the aquifer then it won’t be fatal to the fortress.
14th Outdoor millstone is powered by reactor now.
20th Obsidian: Ambush. I order the gates raised. I guess we’ll have to let the merchants try the caves. I’m not sending dwarves out to die to another 4 ambush squads. Ide rather we faced the current forgotten beast and get the caravan on its way. Checking the report again I see its kobolds and belay my orders. Blow that, the caravan guard can probably butcher them blindfolded. It takes only 2 of the guards to dispatch the entire kobold squad.
Then of course, another pops up. Spearmen. Lower the gates and send the first squad out to deal with it.
Of course, goblins then show up. With a bowman, bummer. SECOND AND THIRD MELEE, OUT SIDE NOW! DOUBLETIME IT!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Crusty peanut is bashing things with 2 steel shields with abandon.
Rovod the caravan dwarf gained a title for butchering kobolds. Hell not last long against all those goblins alone though. CHARGE YOU DAFT BARMYS!
Crusty is knocked unconscious, Wannazzaki charges in to try save him.
He manages it, but not before the goblin bowman wrecks crusty’s leg with an arrow to the bone.
Rovod holds his own as the others try run to his aid.
Meanwhile, another ambush pops up, hopefully close enough to the fortifications for the crossbow dwarfs to take some part in it. Meanwhile Wannazaki finishes up the goblin bowman with relish.
A third ambush party pops up. We’ve now got allot of mêlée goblins out their running around. This may get sticky.
Rovod is still going strong.  However one of our mace dwarfs bites it due to some pike goblins.
Shortly after another mace dwarf meets his end. It’s going to be a pain getting the squad reorganised...
Larkin the sniper and the other crossbow dwarves continue to rain bolt after bolt into our foes.
23rd: the battle still rages, and another foe has appeared. The 4th goblin ambush squad has shown up.
A third mace dwarf falls, shot and killed this time. The squad has almost been wiped out. To be honest, unless the next overseer makes a metal industry, military casualties will be high. Id the glazer got a spear through the brain for going out to try retrieve weaponry.
Wannazaki II is in a deadly duel with a spear goblin. He’s winning, for now.
.. a thief is discovered. Bloody kobolds.
A goblins leading the run around for half the damn military and the place is swarming in suicidal dorfs.

1st of Granite:
Spring, the siege is repulsed, the squads are back to their strength, the dorfs are recovering the many wounded and valuables, and the marksdorfs are playing shoot the kobold in a dried up pond.
My time as overseer for this year is over. Grabbing the last dwarf I handed over to, I shove the journal into their hands and tell them to get in gear, and if they need my help, I’ll be in the Gargoyle tower. If they want the help or opinion of all the overseers at once, then that’s what the council room is for.  Grabbing a barrel of whisky, I go to chill out after a hard years work.
-you may be able to go another year without re-activating the farms, keeping the food supplies to within a year or two worth will reduce lag. As it is, my fps is low for me. I didn’t managed to get a clean up like I expected, it’s a bit hard when every bugger ambushes you at the same time. Says something for our military though that they managed to fight off 6 hostile ambush squads with only a squad worth of losses in dwarves overall. I suggest we cut access to the outdoors after we’ve looted the last bits and bobs.

Conrad Your up again. saves here:

Burarum. A thread that moves at my speed! Said Treebeard. And not 'wanting' to take my turn is a bit unfair. I was wanting to get more people on board without me and Kaz' just hot potato'ing the fort back and forth. And Imak for that matter. I suppose three isn't bad. I should pay more attention.
