Wow, that's some heavy weaponry. My first captain, wearing one of my precious few personal armours, just got one shotted by a floater at point blank range.

E: And another one did it again to my power armoured sergeant who managed to survive a grenade blast by coaxing 2 floaters out to absorb the blast.

Terror missions rape me even with laser weaponry and armour. An alien threw some sort of grenade or bomb at me lander ramp as I was unloading troops and clearing the landing area and took out most of my squad. Also, chryssalids.

Yeah, terror missions are a real bitch. They're like farm battles, except there are civilians so you can't follow the "blow the shit out of everything in sight" path or else you'll kill everything.

Unless it's a Chryssalid terror mission. In which case, they're already dead. And you will be, too, unless you religiously follow the "blow the shit out of everything in sight" path.  ;)

Those are easy.
My only problem was that I had to fight ethereal right after the first month. Haven't played since that a long time.

People don't believe that smoke grenading your ramp turn 1 is a necessity until they get their whole squad blaster bombed or alien grenaded on turn 1.

I just had an epic base attack. This was the second base I attacked, the first was a floater one so it was pretty easy. This was a sectoid one, meaning utter rape from psionics. I noticed the grav wells that my team came down were pretty much right next to the control center, so I was going to rush most of them straight at it. It went much worse than I'd anticipated as the previous one had been so easy. My guys were getting shot from above and after taking out a few aliens, the aliens started using mind control, quite successfully. Eventually, I had 6 guys left who kept panicking or going berserk, gradually that number was ground down till I had one guy left outside the control room grav well. He overcame his fear after a few turns, threw a couple high explosives up the grav well, then went up and finished off the last one with a nade. He made it so close to escaping but got shot in the back.

I still only got about 93 score for that though, lost my only transport and all but one of my soldiers. Not sure whether to reload or not. I've been getting frustrated with my score going down as of late, even taking out that first base only got it above 0 temporarily and my funding keeps getting cut. I can't take down the large craft since I don't have anything other than 2 basic interceptors with avalanches and it's rare I can actually catch up to UFOs. Any tips?

Put your base in Europe, interceptors with cannons and stingrays are fine, use "Aggressive attack" when fighting UFOs. If it's a terror ship or battleship on terror/retaliation then you won't ever catch it, they go faster than any terrestrial vehicle I believe.
