That is why they said to run the Collector's edition with those additional programs, they fix the broken stuff.

If DOSBox is not running it well, either you've got it set up wrong (too few cycles, wrong mode, etc), or your computer isn't powerful enough, for which it would have to be fairly outdated -- no, I correct myself, it could be brand new and still not be powerful enough, if it's a cheap crappy computer, but still: It would have to have a pretty bad CPU in it.

I am playing it on my old PC. My old PC is fairly competent, can run oblivion at max easily with smooth framerate (albeit with stuttering whenever there is a huge amounts of NPC)
I tried changing and fiddling with the settings in Dosbox, if the cylcles are low, the game lags, if they are a high the game is super fast, there is no middle point between them. I also own the collectors edition but the sounds effects in that version are just straight out horrible.

I've whipped up a comprehensive guide some time ago, on how to get XComCE to be mostly playable with all fixes and as close to the original as possible (sans bugs).

I know how to run the game the way you suggest, but the real problem is the default music doesn't work and everything else is shit or doesn't fit the game or doesn't makes the atmosphere

Well, no way to help you there then. Unless you can get UFO Extender to work with MP3s. If you can, you could convert the old MIDIs.

edit: I suppose even if you can't, you could make a CD image out of 'em and use the PSX CD option.

I finally got the Steam version of this, and I can't figure out how to get XCOMutil on it.
View the documentation. Also, I'd recommend editing some lines of the dosbox.conf file in the dosbox folder so it doesn't automatically run Xcom as soon as you start dosbox up.

Steam's a bitch, sorry.
Did you even try it yourself before? It works, dude.

There's a lot of information in the documentation, and I can't find anything related to not actually having the game on your HDD.

I was hoping to slightly improve on the designs, but I found them much too appealing to discard. I really like that game.

Too bad you can't kit the Tempest out like that in-game.

I recently bought UFO defence and it's pretty awesome. My first game is going OK so far, Australia seems to have a base or something in it, it constantly gets attacked and since my base is in the middle of Europe, there's not much I can do about it, so my funding gets lowered. But France has given me some decent funding boosts which have offset that.

I've been wondering if I should go after terror missions so early in the game. I've just been chasing a large UFO, my interceptors hit it with about 10 avalanches but it didn't go down. It eventually stopped in Berlin and started a terror mission. I've sent a skyranger after it with 10 guys, half of which have any battle experience. They're armed with rifles, one with a cannon and no armour. I've also brought a tank/cannon HWP along. I'm not sure whether to just land then abort or actually try destroying them. No harm in trying and reloading, but should I just ignore them early on?

Try sending an interceptor on patrol at Australia/Indonesia. If a base exists there, they'll find it.

Terror missions are.... Terrifying, at times. Trying to beat them is a good idea, but challenging since terror missions have more aliens than most ships counting terrorists. Landing there and then pulling out immediately lessens the blow even (-1000 points -> -300/400 points). Try researching laser technology, laser rifles are quite good weapons and don't require ammo.

Yea, I've been pulling out the last few missions. I tried this one since I had a HWP. Those floating disk things seem to be invincible. Aliens managed to destroy the HWP and kill the whole team, while I took out about 4 of them. I also found out about the danger of psionics in this mission. I reloaded and I'm just gonna abort.

The wiki says to take them down with weapons in this order:

Heavy Cannon (AP only) can be used but you will need the massed fire of half a full squad for a whole turn to bring down just one disc. Forget standard Rifles or Pistols - they're just too tough. HE rounds (Heavy Cannon or Auto Cannon) and regular Grenades (even Proximity mines) are almost totally ineffective. Of course, once you have Plasma weapons, things start to look up.

Explosives work wonders because cyberdiscs, like all large terrorists, are 4 tiles on the battlescape which simply multiplies damage by 4, since it affects each quarter individually. Failing any of that, just line up a bunch of guys with rifles and auto fire at it until you bring it down. I've seen soldiers take them down with basic rifles before.

EDIT: Cyberdiscs also have amazing reactions and accuracy,  not getting shot is usually harder than hitting it. Don't stand near it when you kill it, either.
