No! Don't go there!
« on: April 19, 2011, 01:34:32 pm »

ok, so im wondering how i can make it so nobody can go in an area, like forbidden area without using doors. cause currently people are retartedly walking infront of my practicing marksdwarves. i want them to stay out of the way of the arrows so they stop getting crippled.

You can set traffic restrictions from the designation menu.

Traffic restrictions won't STOP a dwarf from going to an area, they will make it more "costly" for pathing purposes.  If there is a good reason for the Dwarf to go there, he will.

If there is an area you truly NEVER want a dwarf to be (magma cistern or something), you need to wall it off, or place a door in the way and forbid that door from the 'q' menu.

Shot? There's no friendly fire in DF, with the exception of ballista bolts and maybe catapult ammo.

Dwarves can be encouraged to stay out of an area by traffic restrictions and prevented from taking jobs there by using burrows, but nothing will discourage pets or loitering children.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Are you sure they're actually getting shot? I've never seen a dwarf get accidentally shot by friendly fire even when archers are shooting down a tunnel into a huge melee mob.

Anyway, I usually make archery lanes by digging a dead-end tunnel and putting the archery target at the end. This is no good if you want to recycle ammo though.

Perhaps you should put your barracks/archery range out of the way of the common mob?

Or perhaps assign every dwarf save the military to a burrow that does not include the barracks?

By any chance, are you using a danger room?
