Exact same problem as you guys descibed. I just dug into it and then I made a farm temporarily to get some food. I went to select the plant to be grown and I noticed its all labled above ground even though there is a roof over it. The layers are BlackSand, SiltyClay, Soil with aquifer. The farm is located on the black sand. So Plz fix this soon I love this place I found!

Again, guys, just go down two levels instead of one for the farm and remember not to dig above it. As long as there's solid, natural wall above your farms they're subterranean.

Sadly, of course, this means you'll probably have trouble loading an existing fort, but at least all hope isn't lost.

THat does KILL easy farming though since 2 levels down is usually rock and not something you can just straight plant in so then you need irrigation.

On another note regarding this... it'll change Z levels above it.  I had a hollowed out area that was still subterranean since it was dug in 33d. However I then dug an area out on the the Z-Level below it and that level TWO levels down became "above ground." The First Z Level down then also suddenly became above ground even though it had still been subterranean until the 2nd z level down was dug so it's flipping both ways.... Sadly... this cost me a legendary miner who was caught in the freezing.

I think I'm going back to d too.

An existing fort should probably have stockpiles of outdoor seeds to grow in place of dwarven ones. If there aren't shrubs outside, you can still order seeds from traders.

That said, I haven't built any fortresses on utterly inhospitable places where nothing grows outside, if there are such places.

One other thing I noticed before I gave up 33e, if all of the levels above any given tile are mined out (not channeled) then that tile becomes labeled as "above ground".  Even for a tile that is 15 Z-LEVELS underground.  That is a bit much.  So please get this fixed for the next release.

I think the problem stems from the fact that the game may not be checking wether or not the floor above is a natural floor, or a construction.
[If that really is the case, it'd make sense, and should be quite easy to fix.]

Looks like if one layer above is considered "above ground" then the layer beneath it will also be above ground. This means if your loam/silt/whatnot is 1 layer down from surface, and you mine it out, it will be above ground. Basically its not checking to see if theirs a floor above or not, fixed the channel problem but created a new problem. Considering the fact that soil is almost always 1 layer beneath the surface, for now, the only way to farm underground is to muddy a room which has a solid layer above it. I usually dig down to -2 z before i begin any real construction anyway, so i didnt notice this right away, until my fortress grew large enough to require a farm. You should be able to use 33e fine for underground farming if you pick a spot that has 2 layers of soil, and use the lower layer, leaving the layer above it untouched, however i personally will be using 33d until this gets sorted out. Once again a flaw in the game only goes to show how awesome it is, who can say they didnt have fun figuring this one out?  :D

wasnt sure the best place to post this but i considered since some where already talking about going back to 33d in this thread i would put it here. the config file for dwarf foreman on the wiki has been upgraded to 33e with the 33d changes removed. i looked around a bit and found the old 33d config on a flash drive i use to tote DF around, so heres the numbers:

check=007a6535
critter_start=0141EA30
dwarfidpos=0123FAC8
profession_start=45c

You can view the history of any page on a wiki. The information isn't discarded.

I discovered that I was suffering the same effect after I noticed that my dwarves were only planting on two squares of my farm plot - these corresponded to the two squares that were under a thicker layer of soil.

It also seems to affect dismantled constructions, ie: mine out an area 1 z-level below ground, build a workshop, dismantle the workship, and soem of the squares are now outside and light.

It also appeared to affect areas that had become bloodstained in my barracks, but I was pretty tired at the time, so that may not be true.  I can confirm that later.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

For some reason, I don't have to set what to plant every season/year anymore, it just carries on from the last season. Not sure if that was intended, or just an extension of the bug but it is extremely convenient though.

It was explicitly stated in the development log so it is an intended feature or a bugfix of an intended feature.
