When I get a guy standing on the armor stand I just cycle them inactive/active.  They'll go a couple steps then come right back, usually to a different spot off the stand.  Sparring, iirc, requires some room.  If your danger room isn't something like 5x5 they probably won't spar much.  Sparring doesn't happen that much, regardless.

It is 5x5. It's stupid that they just stand around doing individual training.

Edit: So they spar a bit but why not whenevr possible?

Build the armour stand in a 1x1 area off the barracks, designate the barracks, then seal the stand with a door set as locked/internal.

As for the sparring, dwarves will wait until a much higher skill level before sparring with the new military. (Bonus points: Training weapons are useless for regular training, as your soldiers will not wail on each other, but simply *tap* with their weapons)

You've got a danger room, it doesn't really matter.  They'll learn so damn quick from that you won't notice their sparring or training at all.
