Individual training in sleeping barracks?
« on: October 07, 2010, 02:15:26 pm »

I set up a wooden spike room which my squad is set to train in and a separate barracks which they are only set to sleep in. My militia commander has trained in the spike room but the other guy still trains in the sleeping barracks (which was previously a training barracks as well. I have tried remaking both barracks, and putting the squad off-duty then back on. What can I do?

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.

Set them to sleep in the danger room, too.

I should have gone into more detail.  Letting em sleep on the floor is great because they'll train while they're asleep, too.  Just make the armor stand gold, maybe gold walls, whatever.  They won't get that bad of a thought from sleeping on the floor while getting prodded by wooden dowels.

Thanks. Now I have another problem! The guy in my squad is active and training but the commander of the squad isn't - he is just wandering about inactive...

Edit: Now it's the other way around... Could I have accidentally made it so that only 1 of them can train at once? That 'minimum to train' thing isn't actually maximum or something?

Inactive as in "No Job"?  Do you have the train order set to fewer troops than are in the squad?  If the answer to the last is yes, that's a good thing.  Otherwise, need more info.

Right, at first my axeman was training and my militia commander said 'No Job'. Now, my militia commander is training and my axeman not only says 'No Job', he has gone back to being a Woodworker... My minimum training number is at 1, they are both in the same, active squad, they both have the same gear...

EDIT: Also, they are set to train every month of the year. Is it possible that they have just decided 'fuck that' and ignored their schedule?

So far I have observed the minimum number seems to set the number of dwarves required to begin a training session. If you have 5 in a squad, but the min. is 1, only 1 dwarf will train.
The schedule is being followed, but what is happening is as one dwarf finishes his session, another dwarf runs to the barracks to start theirs.

But if I put the minimum to 2 they won't train unless they are both free?

Yes, this also seems to be the case.
I typically embark with one dedicated military dwarf, then draft my entire first migrant wave (minus any incredibly useful skills). With a squad of 5-7 dwarves, at minimum training size 5, they train up pretty quickly.

If you set it to two then they'll train and train and train and never stop.  It's not really a case of if they're both free; they will be there to train if you give the order.  If you set it lower, like you have, then they'll switch off, taking breaks.

So will they literally starve/be dehydrated (is there a single word for dying of lack of water?) to death? Or will they only take breaks to eat?

I've never actually seen anyone drop dead in my games so I cannot tell you for certain.  But until they get to Hero, they'll get some major bad vibes.

Ok. Also, is there any way to stop them from standing on the armour stand itself and so not getting hit by the spears? And why are they just doing individual training rather than sparring?

When I get a guy standing on the armor stand I just cycle them inactive/active.  They'll go a couple steps then come right back, usually to a different spot off the stand.  Sparring, iirc, requires some room.  If your danger room isn't something like 5x5 they probably won't spar much.  Sparring doesn't happen that much, regardless.
