Also, I can explicitly verify that getting somebody else hurt won't fix it: I got an ambush not long after my post and have two more dwarves in the hospital.  The original one is still not getting sewn up, and I can only hope that the two new ones fare better on that front.

I've been having the fake suturing problem for several seasons now, with the doctor never finishing suturing either of my injured dwarves. However, his skill has gone from dabbling to novice, so I'm optimistic that he'll actually be able to complete the suturing once his skill is high enough.

I figured out that its the nail damage that causes suturing to fail.

Editing the nail tissue template to include [HEALING_RATE:100] causes suturing to finish and the wound to heal properly.

Not sure what the problem is with the surgery.
