In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Ctrl-Mousewheel is your friend - even on a 1920 monitor you can get rid of 9% of the background... just means the text is huge :)

Plus you get to see the kitten!

Today while reading the new devlog I got a nosebleed, that refused to stop for two hours, and left lots of bloody cloths. This is probably unrelated but I still think the background needs to change, I like the brownish look of the pictured submitted previously, but you could also just turn the brightness down a bit.

I like that the background picture changes, depending on which tab you're on.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

I do like how the grey C becomes lots of grey C's.

For those who hate the bright background, like me, I wrote a simple Stylish theme that darkens it: see http://userstyles.org/styles/27084 .

Um, with a graphical tileset and non-hyper color scheme?

Edit: Really though, I don't see what all the fuss is about. It should only hurt your eyes (like someone else in the thread said) if your monitor's brightness/contrast is waay off.

Yeah, all I'm seeing is a fairly normal color palette. I don't think I'd mind if it was the forum background too, as long as posts and any free-floating text bits have a solid background. I tried, as an experiment, to put a DF world image as a desktop wallpaper. Yup, just as I thought - it's not really jarring, but the many different symbols make icons and text difficult to see against it.

I don't see any problem with the background image, and this is a (currently) former tileset user.

Not much to say, other than I think there's nothing wrong with it.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

For those who really find the background painful to look at, it's easy enough to fix - you can try Stylish like someone else linked, or you can use AdBlock Plus (or probably loads of other tools) and choose "block image" to turn it to a plain black background.

I understand the problem stems from the fact that the default colour scheme being used in the backgrounds has its colours at 100% saturation, a trait widely considered a crime worthy of capital punishment in the world of website design.
I understand the choice behind leaving it as is (whether it's conscious or not) is caused by sentiment (after all it's the default colour scheme of the games of yore).
I didn't find it particularly repulsive (it IS the default colour scheme of DF after all) but I do agree that toning it down in a way that Sensei suggested would look much better and less repulsive to newcomers. Various main hues could even be used for various pages.
