I love the new site- especially the background image. Really don't get why people don't like that.

The background image is far too busy, really. It fits well thematically, but it's just distracting if you're accessing the page for content. This is exacerbated on larger screens, though - an 800 screen will yield no real problem, whereas on new fancy widescreens, each margin is as wide as the actual text column, creating a large busy area to distract the viewer. It's so bad that it even distracts from the changing character on the left, which would normally draw all attention due to the fact that it changes.

Ideally, the background map would be made very dull (decrease contrast and darken, or darken the colors in init and regenerate image) and the changing character would alter on refresh/new page.

I hate non-scrolling backgrounds just on principle, but other than that the site is great.

I wonder if toady knows that Geocities is down...

But seriously, the layout is good, the background is terribad.

And yes, saying that while playing a game that is made of the same graphics is awkward, but a website should have a professional look to it, and static garish backgrounds does not a professional website make.

/shrug.

1600x1200 and I think it looks fine. Each to their own though. There will always be people who like or dislike a change. Bet if you ask people in 6 months time what the old front page looked like, 30%* will say 'What old front page?', another 30% will say 'I can't remember' and the rest will describe something that isn't what the old page looked like.

* All numbers are entirely made up and pulled out of thin air.

I like the new design as far as the navigation bar and buttons go, but I agree the background's colors keep throwing lecherous glances at my eyes' rear ends, while twirling their mustaches. In addition to what you said, I think maybe blurring some or parts of it would help.

The background makes my eyes bleed but the layout ia better.

Um, with a graphical tileset and non-hyper color scheme?

Yup, I'm not one of those who complains usually or about changes in particular, but the background together with how the midsection scrolls... it actually makes me a little bit nauseous  :)

Maybe it really depends on the screen you're using somehow?

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the retro or "beyond quality" look in general, but that clutter...

Also, how about changing the title of this thread to something sensible, e.g. "about the new website..." ?

The website is beautiful. Stop saying nay, naysayers. The background fits in with the theme of the site, and the text is over a solid color, so it's really not hard to read.

The background is just really jarring, not to mention that the primarily blue and green landscape doenst fit with the rest of the site... Actually I think that's the problem, the actual content area is brown and white, fairly unobtrusive colours, and the background is BLUE and GREEN. See how that works?
