I think it looks good.

Edit:
This website is clearly a april fools day joke why is it still up?

Don't be purposefully obtuse to put down Toady's work.   That's probably why your previous thread got deleted.   It's entirely possible to have differing opinions and be civil.

To be fair, I did think for a moment that it might be a joke. But like I said, it's not nearly outrageous enough. Just a little odd.

Seeing as imageshack crunches the picture and I can't attach files in the forum emailer, I'm afraid I lack a way to give it to him.

Of course, Toady probably has more important issues on his mind as well.

I like it, but it seems to turn newcomers off.  They don't appreciate how awesome it is because they haven't played the game yet.  All they see is eye-destoying contrast.

If those images hurt your eyes you should turn your screens brightness and contrast down.  But hey, whatever, its your eyesight and the longer you use your screen like that the worse they are going to get.

but it seems to turn newcomers off.

That's some pretty wild speculation considering it's been around for a day.

I made a big post, but I lost it.

Anyway, I put the brown from the content boxes next to Sensei's modified image. It's a definite improvement. It could stand to be a significantly harder and darker brown, but no huge issue.

I'm going to have to side with the folks who like the new site, here. To those that say the 'Site should look professional, harrumph rabblerabble'.... Well, this is a site for a game. The site also gives a *good* idea what you're in store for when you play the game. It's fast, the menu gives you nice easy to read options of what to view, and it works well. The words are easy to read, and at least at my resolution, the background isn't too bad. I think it's quite fitting, and loved it when April 1st hit. I was hoping the moment I saw it that it wouldn't go away on the 2nd.

Seriously, if you play this game, how can you not love that background? You may use tilesets, yes, but realize folks, that view right there is what Toady designed. He worked hard on it, and (I would be, if I were him) is probably quite proud of how that ascii world looks. Heck, it both takes me back and gives me the happy jitters when I see a big ascii world like that.. So much information contained there, that graphics seem to convey so poorly.. perhaps I just haven't seen a good tileset yet, but most of them leave me wanting. :/ And none seem to properly support the worldgen level.

I like it myself, no readability problems.

Oh, and what's with the kitten-and-a-shoe?

The new site is great I wouldn't want it any different.

The previous site was too 90's.  Like someone else said.

I think a great side picture would be plain black with the same random symbols that show up in hidden areas.

Only one person said it should look professional. Most people with complaints just don't like the contrast with the background. Can't argue about taste can you?

Let's not make a deep argument about ASCII appreciation out of this. Personally, I play the game in ASCII, but like I said, the website contrast makes me feel a little bit nauseous. That's all. Not a big issue.

The new website is bad.

I used to enjoy reading the dev_log, but damn. If that background is to stay, then no more.

It is trying to give me migraine and an epileptic seizure at the same time.

For those who think that it is okay, why doesn't this forum's colour selection include those nice, bright colours?

The new website is beautiful and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I like pretty much everything about the new website in comparison to the old, except for the background.  A number of posters have talked about it being too large, too bright, too busy, and for these reasons too distracting, especially for this site's foreground.

There are real differences in people's comfort with bold backgrounds.  My comfort level is relatively low; I want the foreground to stand out and the background to be secondary.   When a website doesn't do this, I have trouble reading it.

The quickest fix would be simply to dim or fade the background.  1 vote also for making the foreground wider on screens that can handle it (Y % of screen space, with a minimum of X pixels).
