If there are no magma forges (or there are and they aren't working yet), they will default to the normal forge.

I've had dwarves use the magma forges and furnaces before.

One word of warning though, if the forges are blinking on and off due to the magma pit not bieng completely full yet, that will cause the dwarf to cancel and go nuts.

@Grendus: Actually, the moods don't require charcoal to power the forge if it's a regular one. They might use one in the construction though. Charcoal is just needed for normal operations.

I can confirm this, at least anecdotally. So far I've gotten bored of (or at least frustrated by lag and such) each and every fort before setting up my magma works and I had no moody metalworker complain about my coal-powered forges.

I once had a dwarf go for a magma forge that was flickering because the magma tunnel underneath it was still filling.  He got there, it flickered off, and he instantly went insane.

I can also verify that metalworkers will use magma forges, but glassmakers won't use magma glass furnaces.

Has anyone ever had a moody dwarf select a magma forge, smelter, or glass furnace?

weaponsmith made me a nice artifact hammer in a magma forge, so yes they will grab those.
