I'd like if the game reflected this. As is, bronze is quite useless. For now getting rid of generic damage percentages would work, later on when weapon wear is in and stone swords start breaking, maybe

Oh and are obsidian swords slower than steel ones like they should? It shouldn't have a crit modifier at least since it's not a stabbing weapon. It's a club

How is it useless?  I'm on a map without a sedimentary layer and my entire military is armed with iron crossbows from goblin armor firing bronze and bismuth bronze bolts.

All western civ swords are clubs... (save the fencing ones...)

Bronze isn't useless, but it has an undeserved -25% modifier for weapons/armor (because bronze was available before iron in 2D version and the game hasn't been rebalanced since).

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "undeserved"?

From the wiki on bronze:

Though bronze is stronger (harder) than wrought iron,[citation needed] the Bronze Age gave way to the Iron Age. Bronze was still used during the Iron Age, but for many purposes the weaker wrought iron was found to be sufficiently strong. Archaeologists suspect that a serious disruption of the tin trade precipitated the transition. The population migrations around 1200 – 1100 BC reduced the shipping of tin around the Mediterranean (and from Great Britain), limiting supplies and raising prices.[2] As ironworking improved, iron became cheaper, and people figured out how to make steel, which is stronger than bronze and holds a sharper edge longer.[3]

Huh.

Guess I must've heard wrong, I was sure that Iron was stronger than Bronze.

Learn something new every day, I guess.

Early iron was actually worse, and was used as cheap replacements, but over time the practice of refining it improved [+carbon -> steel], and became superior to bronze.

How do you figure?

Western swords were not terribly sharp, and generally left blunt. In fact, a popular technique was to grab your weapon by the place and use the hand guard as a type of hammer. These weapons were made to be effective on heavily armored enemies, which sharp weapons could not easily effect.

The sharp swords were more used as axes, cleaving at lightly-armored opponents. Eastern nations didn't have as advanced armor as western nations, and thus they advanced their skills with sharp weapons. Why did western nations develop heavy armor?

Horseback riding. Not that Eastern nations didn't have horses, but Western nations used them for agriculture. Thus they had a lot more understanding of them and used them more effectivly. Eastern nations(Primaraly Japan) had crops that are raised in muddy paddies, where horses would be of little use. Thus they didn't have as many and were not quite as skilled at riding. With a horse, your armor weight doesn't matter as much. You need something to keep all those sharp pointy polearms from ripping you off your horse, or at least from impaling you.

Just as a side note: samurai swords aren't sharp.  If they were, they'd get stuck in the bones when you lopped off someone's head.  Instead the blade is dull and goes clean through.

Still quite sharper than western swords. Not razor sharp, but I don't think they were borderline blunt. Then again, all I know is that they act like axes.

I guess I picked it up somewhere. But back on topic:

I would appreciate being able to make my own damage messages. Of course the damage type would likely be the same as the vanilla ones(Really, how much can you customize how well soemthing chops off limbs and blows people backwards, amung other things?). Sure the damage would say "The arm is electrecuted", but it would just be gore damage.

Again, we need to be able to customize what damage types does to bodies.
