Except "blood is thicker than water" has always had that same meaning, and the expanded version is centuries newer.

It is a great example of how prescriptivism is often used to attack the language used to express an idea in lieu of engaging with the idea itself.

Bzzt. The original German proverb translates, roughly, as "Water does not spoil the blood of familial relation." In other words, the blood of kinship is no thicker than water.

Err... that has the same meaning as what Penguin of Honor was saying- essentially, family > friends.

A little more than kin, and less than kind.

In other words, the blood of kinship is no thicker than water.

No, it means the opposite. Kin is family.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

The original quote is saying that bonds of blood are too strong to be spoiled by water.

What he said "in other words" means the opposite, I'm talking about what he's actually referring to, not the paraphrasing. You've cut down to the wrong bit when you quote me quoting him. Go for the thing in quotation marks, as in, a relatively more faithful translation of the saying.

Can we maybe stop arguing a bad metaphor and actually advise?
