Nope, that's diamond.  Natural 4-sided crystals.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

Urist McMayor: "Ah, the cistern is filling up nicely. Lack of water shall be a thing of the past. Urist McForgetful, you're in charge of closing the floodgates when the water level is high enough."

Urist McForgetful: "Sure thing, guv."

Lack of water shall be a thing of the past.

Such fatal, fatal words.

Urist McForgetfull Governor: so yeah keep digging that up down staircase until you hit a cave and tell me when your done so I can build a wall to make sure nothing gets into the fortress....

Several months later i still hadn't dealt with the completely opened up entrance to an underground lake...

Usu Shigoreth (something like that) a bloated Cyclopes-turtle with antennae and spittle swam up into my fortress and slaughtered a baby...and a legendary mason. Spittle doesn't seem to have much of an effect on shields though so my dwarves were able to walk up to him and stab him to death

Aligators my second fort, I made a new fort after my first had been so successfull, no military but one dwarf punched a were weasel out and killing it, had one death after 5 years. Decided to quit. Second fort died from getting torn to pieces, cave collapses occaisionaly and then goblins came and killed almost everyone, but got rid of the CATaclysm. out of my 235 dwarves only 20 remained, 10 farmers, 4 miners and 6 peasants. I had a couple others but they went insane, luckily they took a couple of the goblins with them. I then learned about how to properly set up gates and traps. On the up side ti lead to one of the most epic dwarves I ever had
