Yep. Kinda sucks, really. I suppose I'll have to start murdering elves.

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

Sacking a caravan a year isn't super satisfying now that they won't siege you. I gave elves babysnatcher to double my sieges but two times nothing is still nothing.

My first fortress, in DF 2010. My Fortress was on the border between a region with aquifer and one without. I accidently dug out some downward stairs on the aquifer level from below. Result: Most of my fortress was flooded, attempts to seal it up were futile.

My motto is to always build a drain.  Even if you don't need it, just knowing that anything that enters your stairwell is capable of being flushed into the lowest caverns is kind of a heart-warming thought.

Furthermore, build doors.  And hatches.  They're cheap, and you never know when you will need to quarantine a portion of your fortress.  (Even if I mostly only use it to keep miasma at bay because the cats killed too many worms or lizards to clean up...)

Just so you guys know, you have to wait around 5-10 years for ambushes and sieges to show up most of the time. Necromancers sometimes arrive much sooner.

Wait, your vermin corpses produce miasma ? Are you playing 40d ?

When I started playing, I was pretty well-prepared, having watched youtube tutorials and having looked stuff up in the wiki. Therefore, my first proper fortress ran rather smooth, although it had a lot of idlers. Then I accidentally disabled cancellation announcements. Then I ran out of barrels. Then of booze. By the time I had fixed the problem, four people had already died of thirst.
Then, uh, tantrum spiral. When it died down, I had gone from about 150 dwarves to 20 and my militia commander had gained a title from killing the berserk dwarves. The fortress only survived because I had set everyone who was not insane to making coffins. Also a bunch of migrants arrived.
Everything was full of blood and discarded clothes belonging to dead people were lying around everywhere.
Sadly, I don't have the save anymore.

First version I played was 40d. In one of my first few forts, I decided I'd try and make a nice waterfall for my new mayor... it didn't work out like I wanted to (since I was still getting the hang of water physics then), and I ended up flooding the fort.

In a twist of glorious irony, the mayor's name was "Fikod Fortresssubmerged". Prophetic, I say.

I'm a dumb hipster who plays older Dorf Fort versions. Mostly DF2010 and 40d. I also make and play a lot of silly mods, and find my own ways to have Fun.

They stopped doing that?  What version? I thought I was just getting better at making sure I had spare corpse haulers, and I always made sure to have an atom-smasher dump to take care of them before the miasma hit.

Doors are also useful in locking tantrumming dwarves in their room (or their workshop or whatever) until they cool down.

Experiences with fun? got lots of those.

The circus turning my military and everyone else into ground dorf meat. Then leaving one dwarf, starving, dehydrated as he was locked in a room.  As the clowns were busy fireballing kittens on the surface.

My personal favorite fun?

I embarked on a savage savanna, Easy going. Got an above-underground fort.  Suddenly. NECROMANCER!

I managed to seal the door with granite blocks before the zombies could get in.

However, I did not realize they could climb.

5/10 of my military died before I could seal the hole in the roof, and make the outside section of the fort taller and harder to scale.

After 2 years of being surrounded by heavily armed zombie elves and goblins,  I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I dig out a tunnel to the surface.

All the zombies rush into my fort annnddd

get squished by bridges and serrated disk traps.

Victorious, I check the creatures screen for any remaining zombies.

1.

Trapped in a tree.

Right outside my fort.

Nobody could use the regular exit because they got scared, and my woodcutter couldn't cut it the tree down because he got scared each time he got close.

Marksdwarves didn't do anything.

I was in the midst of making a cave in to destroy the tree when another necromancer siege showed up and killed everyone, because they were all working on destroying the tree.

I don't know why but it makes me crazy that you didn't simplify that fraction.

Wasn't sure how to format it.  I came back to the fort in adventure mode afterward and stole a few masterwork elf bone helmets, they didn't save me from the lethal bar fight though.

I started to learn the game a bit at a time. Start a fort, learn how to mine. Start another learn how to farm. I was learning each system as I went and feeling pretty good. Then one of my forts lasts a long time and I'm feeling pretty good. Then I notice that DT is telling me some of my dwarves are getting bummed. I try and figure out why, good quarters, nice furniture, good food, the hell is wrong with these guys? They're no related, no one died, so I'm lost. Then one of them loses it, and starts a fight with another one, and another one, and it was ok, just minor injuries until someone took a swing at one of my legendary +5 miners. The resultant pick through the skull of one of my more popular dwarves sent me into my first fortress wide tantrum spiral that saw about two thirds of them dead and the rest so beaten to hell they could barely crawl along. I hadn't learned how to set up a hospital yet so I abandoned that fort.

Yeah, turns out that dwarves really hate it when their clothes rot off and they run around naked.

Learned the clothing industry right away in the next fort.

I don't recall them ever doing that, and I started with .31.04
