Your first experience with fun
« on: May 21, 2015, 04:51:35 pm »

I've played DF several times before but I couldn't grasp the essence of it so I lost interest before getting anywhere, but this time I finally was able to make a functioning fortress with a bunch of dwarves (I've had minor alcohol problems, but nothing serious) Then suddenly I get a message "The Desert Titan Uyira Ithithiconibo Osumequithe has come!  A huge quadruped composed of bloodstone.  It has a pair of squat antennae and it moves deliberately.  Beware its webs!". Oh well, let's see how my 10 men militia holds up after their years of training. Before my militia got there the desert titan killed my fishermen and some haulers, but nothing serious. Then when the militia gets there the desert titan mostly doesn't care and murders everyone spitting webs everywhere. Most of my dwarves get on the main stairway which is right next to the mostly immobile titan so of course it murders each one with webs so the whole 3X3 stairway is red. Meanwhile one of the haulers is having a secretive mood and is demanding a type of cloth that I don't have. And that's how everyone died and I first got to experience true fun :D

After this fun little incindent I'm now wondering: what are your first experiences with fun? (I'm intersted in both the first time you were attacked or got in a problematic situation and the first time you lost even if they're not the same, who knows maybe you murdered a siege party the first time they attacked)

The first and only fort I've lost that wasn't due to me scraping the world, was because of an alligator snapping turtle. Incidentally, it was also my shortest lived fort. Beware the turtles, dude, beware the turtles. It took a bite of one dwarf and then the rest of the buggers dog piled it. Then they all drowned when they followed it into the water.

My first bit of fun, though... geez. In the recent version it was due to climbing. I had a goblin sniper climb to the top of my defensive wall and snipe quite a few dwarves before I had him knocked off. The fall broke his neck so I didn't even get proper revenge. Though the hauler that went up there and punched him was at least well rewarded.

In the older version... I don't even remember. I've been playing this game too long and took an extended break of several years. If I had to guess... probably some huge monster that killed everything or a tantrum spiral. Maybe both together.

A web-spewing gemstone titan is a respectable challenge, for sure.

I don't know that I remember my first experience with FUN. But there is one that I do remember well from my early days of playing DF.

A web-spewing titan showed up. I had 2 squads of 10 militia, one with crosbows, one with swords and axes, who I sent out after the titan. It was a hard fight, which resulted in my entire military being dead and the titan being very badly injured. The titan then made for my fortress, only to be finally put down by a kick from a mule just outside my entrance. I was relieved. I had survived a titan attack for which I was almost certainly under-prepared. I got started on the job of building coffins and collecting the dead.

That's when the local necromancer decided to pay me a visit.

The first I saw of him was when he got the titan's corpse back on its feet. In a panic, I drafted every able-bodied dwarf into the militia and ordered everyone to attack either the necromancer or the titan's corpse, but my untrained and poorly equipped recruits didn't stand much chance. It ended with my entire population being either dead or undead.

A plague of wereelephants. The first slaughtered my military, leaving me with a few survivors. Unfortunately, one became another wereelephant. In my naivety, I ordered the remaining military to kill the wereelephant... and then just sort of watched the loyalty cascade unfold.
I lost about 20% of the population as they mobbed my weak militia to death for daring to attack the bloodthirsty monster in their midst. Then, while a few random incidents of murder continued, the remaining dwarves lucky enough not to be wrapped up in the tantrum spiral started going berserk and committing suicide. As a newbie, I didn't know how to stop anything that was happening, or why it was. Nor did I think to just wall the damn wereelephant in, so every month it went on a rampage through the fort.
When the dust settled, I was left with 4 wereelephants and around 80 unburied bodies (I hadn't yet figured out coffins). I tried to keep playing, but without figure out that I could just wall the damn things in (I didn't understand constructions either. Being a newbie was hard) the wereelephants would just kill any migrants that arrived. Also their children. A few were pregnant, and when their children were born I guess they thought they were on the wrong side of the civil war and beat them to death.

Or maybe it was to spare them from the living hell that was the fortress ruled by my incompetent self. I don't know.

My first serious Fortress, I still remember clearly.  I'd found a Savage hillside with a river; ample metals and vertical above-ground building space.  I'd put down a few Traps and trained 4 Marksdwarves, but was otherwise preoccupied with expanding my layer & getting jewels to my stonecrafters faster.  Then a necromancer showed up.  He moved through the Fortress, slowly and deliberately.

With the last Dwarves huddled in the dining hall and hiding from the zombies that used to be their comrades, everyone remained in surprisingly good spirits.  Then.. then a Dwarf caught sight of his pet cat, now a shambling corpse.  The cat had been simply 'missing', but upon confirmation of its' death, the Dwarf went mad and started throwing granite tables at everyone, lol.  Was quite a sight, following the Necromancer as he went about his work.

Basically my first real fort. This might take a bit of explaining but I promise I'll try to keep it as short as possible.

All was going well except I didn't know how to seal up the cavern leading right into the middle of my fort. Ah well, what's the worst that could happen?

Then winter hit for the second time and with the water frozen we all started to dehydrate but maybe with some luck we can venture into the caves and fin-

"The Forgotten Beast has arrived! It is a stegasauroid who breaths fire! Why? Because f**k you!". Barely any survive, there are burned, tattered empty clothes left scattered all over the floor on piles of ash which used to be people. My joke of a millitary is dead but so is the monster, everybody is at breaking point but still holding strong, drowning their sorrows with scant luxury. Maybe we could turn it around if-

"Another forgotten beast has arrived! It's a giant insect who spews gas that induces necrosis in everything it touches, lol por u". More death, the few peasants who took up arms to kill it succeed but die a slow, gruesome death on their feet chiseling images into the walls, eerily childlike images of farmers cuddling puppies and basic shapes. Elves arrive looking to trade. We slaughter them like savage animals and steal their booze.

A troll strangles a child to death in front of it's mother, the mother gets revenge. Elk birds show up, more death. Only one dwarf remains in hallways smeared with blood, ash and monstrous corpses. He is dehydrated, starving and depressed. I order him to mine out a drinking area with a hole leading into the river. Maybe if he can get just a f**king sip of water-

"The forgotten beast has arrived! It's another f**king horrible insect!"
"Goblins also!"
Clasphoists is already dead, now the monsters fight over the ruin. The forgotten beast kills many goblins but he seems to be losing, not that it matters. The last "survivor" lies in a hole in the empty water tunnels. Finally winter ends and the last thing I see is the water flow in en masse, far, far too late. it engulfs the last survivor and she dies of drowning surrounded by a horde of ghosts while monsters fight in the fort above. Pretty near to insanity myself I became hooked on DF forever.

I would say my first real experience with "Fun" was when I was just starting to get the hang of building a semi-functioning fortress. This was actually the first fortress that I built a hospital in, though not a very good one. It was also my first extended experience with a werecreature, which is where the fun lies.

So first things first, I had a crazy spread of a fortress where I was making waaaayyy more food and alcohol than I would ever need. Pretty early on, a werecreature was spotted, and it obliterated one of my farmers, sending his teeth everywhere, and killed a few of my dwarves. I was having difficulty burying the farmer, as the dwarves kept trying to put his teeth in the coffin, seems to be a bug of some sort, and pretty soon he was haunting my fortress, which was rather surprising to me, but that was not where the fun came from. The fun was, as I built my first hospital(Some beds, tables and chests) and designated a chief medical dwarf, the moment I built the hospital zone, it was filled with half of my fortress of 80 or so population instantly. There were so many dwarves in there, many were lying on the floor, though I had built like twenty beds. Apparently life was a lot rougher than I had imagined in my fortress.

Well, what happened was, while I was preoccupied with ghostlly mcfarmerpants and figuring out how to bury his dumb ass(didn't understand memorial slabs at the time), the few dwarves that were injured by the werecreature were transforming on full moons and injuring other dwarves. This explains the massive influx into my hospital. While my chief medical dwarf and his hastily appointed assistants were trying to sew together wounds without any thread, I realized that my hospital was becoming a pool of blood, paused the game to see werecreatures rampaging the hospital, and this is when I learned the true danger of werecreatures.

My first memorable bit of fun was a bit of civil disorder.  Specifically, the military and civilians started killing each other, a red cleansing of my fortress halls.

I was sealed in safely, due to a siege outside, but some Mountain Home traders were trapped in with me.  They went mad.  So I commanded my loyal guardsman to put them down, with a heavy heart, and they did their duty before the traders harmed one of my peaceful citizens.

This did not sit well with some.  There was immediate dissent in the citizenry, as they had not personally witnessed the Mountain Home delegates act out in aggression.  If only they knew, as I know, then they would understand...

It began as a trickle of violence between the militia and the citizens, with the 180-ish dwarven citizens taking most of the sporadic deaths, but the rate of violence escalated exponentially.  After some time, watching my people with disappointment, the corridors were made red, and very few left alive - one axelord, pushed to his limits by the horror, and two or three broken, frightened, and utterly mad citizens...  And a small pack of murderous horses.

You see, the horses did not take in the violence around them with a pastoral serenity - the death-spree drove them as mad as everyone else, and so they became their own third party in the conflict.  By the end, the horses had the population and combat prowess edge.  So with the ending of the siege outside, I decided to step down, concede to my other flock, and the horses inherited the fortress.

And my most recent ultimate fun was my first experience with were-badgers.

One stopped by to give a friendly hello bite, so we killed it.  But then one of the warriors turned, on the next full moon.  He bit a few more before dying to a civilian beatdown.  The next full moon saw four were-badger citizens getting punched to death, but now the disease had exponentiated.  Next full moon saw everyone dying, thanks to a timely caravan visit.  The guards were having none of this fiddle-faddle, and put down all the survivors, were-badger tainted, or otherwise.

Just gonna hop on the "ERMERGERD WEREBUNNIES" train here. One werehare shows up, the militia slaughters it. I forget to check for bites and one guy was infected. A month later, the guard changes, gets murdered again. This time I remember to check for bites, but can't figure out how to contain the four guys who got bitten. Repeat for a few months in a row, then I finally figure out how to fix it, ending up with werebeasts walled into three different rooms, going berserk, and killing one another. About a month after that, with everyone already sad because there are rotting arms everywhere, I can't get my brewers to make enough booze, why I still don't know, and everybody gets thirsty and tantrums at once, entire fort murders itself, I leave. !!Fun!!

in 40d...

My first ever fortress starved. I think. I managed to build some beds inside, but not to secure food. But that wasn't real Fun.

My first ever successful fortress was hobbit-style, on a single z-level (I did not realize they were multiple z-levels). And when I discovered z-levels, I drained my only source of water due to curious, naive digging.

Then the goblins came. My only defense was doors, and I think a few dabbling militiamen. So it went about as well as what can be expected.

In my first fort I thought I could postpone alcohol production and let them drink water. Then came the winter...everybody died.

The first fun I had was a massive tantrum spiral due to not having good sleeping quarters, not having enough alcohol and the fact that the major died to a elephant (he was friends with half of the fort and had about 5 family members). To be fair I abandoned most of my early forts before anything major happened due to the fact that they were quite shit.

First real violent fun I had was when skeletal horses came down and wrecked everyone and everything back before pulping was a thing. Thats how I learned about evil zones.
