Hah, I had a passing interest in occultism in my early twenties- chaos magick was fun, but clearly reality won out in the end. It's fun to flirt with. Worst it's got now is that I carry a deck around on most occasions (I found an attractive knapsack that goes with my jacket and it holds a tablet, journal, book or two, etc), and I definitely needed to set a little whiskey out for the weed gremlins that kept misplacing my paraphernalia, but y'know, nothing with gravitas.

I'll keep the flirting to the cards and reality to my interpersonal relationships, yeah? Heaven forbid Bay12 watch me make another romantic disaster, ahah.

It's better this way.

I have a bit of a problematic crush on someone. I'm old enough to have yearned, ached, and been burned to make an unmanageable issue of it, but one does not simply walk alongside a cliff without the mind whispering the unthinkable, right? It's not problematic in a gross way, but in a 'friend and friend group' sort of way, especially with current timing. The fallout would be.... cataclysmic.

On a brighter node, I'm mildly upset by something else!

In the wake of my flight from my last life in Albuquerque, I picked up tarot. Started collecting decks I thrifted, learning to read the cards. Objectively, I know it's all made-up hindsight bias interpretive bullshit, but I'm still pulling a daily card while journaling (it got me journaling, so that's good!), reading books on doing reads, wishing I could read the cards for other people, reading a spread about the problematic crush's current relationship with frightening accuracy, yadda yadda. I'm mildly upset that I'm in so deep on a card game and surrounding mysticism, but dammit I'm enjoying it.

I also have nobody to gush to about it because I keep rational company and this is not rational!

Gods, being railroaded into apps sucks. I'm all for Newpipe since it doesn't hook a thousand claws into my phone, among other features. I already had a minor conniption at the start of the month where doing port forwarding on a Comcast router REQUIRES their godforsaken phone application instead of just letting you do it from the in-router webpage, and also absolutely will not let you set a reserved IP address for the forwarding target, and will not let you set forwarding if the device isn't directly connected to the router (fuck you and your wifi range extenders, enthusiasts!), etc etc. I shouldn't need to know MAC spoofing to get forwarding traffic working!

And shit, given the quality of software development work I see every day for my job, it's hard not to see most all software as hastily kludged together to barely give a user experience where the happy path is the only path considered. I can't even get my developers to read the details in my bug tickets or follow the three steps it takes to reproduce a bug without them asking me to spell it out for them again.

Capitalism is killing software.

Seem to have an extra blind spot in my left eye, a little below my centre of vision. Wanders back and forth a bit, so I don't know if I've just got an extra large floater or if something else is up with it.

Got an eye test booked for Saturday, so hopefully that'll clear it up. For all I know it's been there for months or years, my brain's very good at filtering it out unless I'm looking for it and blinking at something bright.

Any chance it followed with a wicked headache, or went away on its own? Migraine aura gives me pretty massive blind spots before the pain kicks in.

Vampire Survivors has announced a collab DLC... with Konami.

And, like. That's weird enough on it's own (VS is incredibly heavily influenced by Castlevania, and them getting to work with the Konami folks is probably something approaching a homage focused indie dev's dream), but the extra sauce is the collab's with the friggin' Contra franchise instead of, y'know, the blatantly obvious.

Wild stuff, in any case.

well, nuts, i already unlocked everything

see, they can remain vampire-free if they don't do the blatantly obvious, though

I got the Big Sad yesterday and it weighs in my mind today like a migraine or hangover.

I think whatever content algorithm they have infers your extra couple seconds of time interacting with the right-wing-nutter webelement to report it constitutes attention and therefore it decides that you should have more of whatever is occupying your attention.

You report a scam fedex job posting on Tumblr, it shows you more of those postings, because you looked at it long enough to report it. It's silly.

everything at work needs to be done with high priority

everyone is working on high priority things

so i get passed tasks with high priority

just kinda having work dumped on me and asked 'hey, ASAP please'

management is frustrated because developers aren't doing the regression testing development like we're requiring (and summarily skipping because everything must be completed with priority and therefore expedited out of this requirement)

upper brass is like 'you did it, you pushed real hard this week to hit our feature goal! do it again with a bigger number of features!'

meanwhile, i'm trapped in meetings about the urgent work that needs to be done urgently instead of working

comcast has decided in their infinite wisdom that a) you cannot set port forwarding from their router and must install their phone app and do it there instead and b) your device must be directly connected to the router via cable or wifi so you can select it to set routing for.

Ordinary routers? You say 'hey, send traffic on port 6969 to 192.168.0.5' and they go 'okeydokes! traffic going that way!' Is there a device there? Who gives a shit! The answer is probably yes, but it doesn't specifically matter! Comcast? You gotta select a device. Your device gotta be online. Your device is not online if it's attached to a wifi range extender. You cannot set any kind of port forwarding on that device. you cannot set port forwarding to a specific IP address.

you will grovel at the feet of this android application that requires an extra level of authentication and has less functionality so you can fail to do the thing you used to be able to do from the internal webpage on the router itself

the internal webpage still exists, by the way- but it exists only to tell you to download the app. I'd throw the damn thing into the bin and replace it with equipment I own, but I'm only renting and it's the homeowner's stuff.

I think my tentative plan is to 'connect my devices to the router via wifi dongle, spoof the MAC address on each dongle to match that of the ethernet port, set static IPs to each MAC I've spoofed, set the forwarding to my devices via the application, then reconnect my devices by hardwire to my wifi range extender (with the matching real MACs) which creams the shitty horrible wifi dongles I'm trying to get away from.

this should have been a five minute endeavor and now i'm spending HOURS trying to get around this bullshit

Just... damnit. Gmail finally dumped the html version, and, of course, the new thing is a sack of shit that looks worse and has worse performance, because that's fucking always what happens when websites dump things that just work for something that requires a friggin' loading screen.

Probably won't migrate just due the effort it would take, but for the love of fuck I wish these idiots would stop "updating" shit that doesn't need to be updated and isn't actually improved on any level in the process. Have to interact with fedex at work and they're trying to transition in a similar way, except their new version that's the same sort of crap is literally nonfunctional for my organization so it's this pigshit except somehow even less competent. How these billion dollar companies keep fucking up in the exact same way I'll never quite wrap my head around -- I know it's corpo brainrot skimping on something important, but I just can't understand it beyond the intellectual level.

Though there's days I look at this stuff and somewhere in all the frustration there's an odd sort of something like respect for whoever's managing to boondoggle the idiot CEOs into making bad decisions like this. Like, fuck them with a rusty rail spike powered by the infinite hate of competent UI designers, but at the same time someone out there's making bank convincing people to do remarkably stupid shit and there's something similar to respect for that. It's not actually respect, because they're using their power for evil and I hate them, but it's something resembling it. Just wish someone'd goddamn stop them, blech.

the router here lets you do all configuration within a web browser, entirely as it should

EXCEPT for port forwarding or DMZ settings, which REQUIRE you to use the xfinity app to configure, which requires you to log into their service

and, like, for what? configuring just these two features has always worked fine via html, why am i being required to install crapware to do basic router management

it's like everyone
a) moves fast and breaks things
b) patch jobs the things they break instead of doing proper fixes
c) has no clue how to program
d) changes things for the sake of change
e) has already moved onto enshittifying something else

oh shit, Truean! I was just wondering today where life took you. Glad to see you by again.

put LED lights along my bicycle tires

put a new glarus bicycle bell on the handlebars - it even has a matching color scheme

found a bicycle seat cushion thing that wraps around the existing seat so i won't bruise my ass so bad

lubed it up, no more squeaking

bike's still coming out to less than a hundred bucks total to have acquired, fixed, and put all my personalizing touches on

thrifting is really good in denver

i, uh, wasn't really talking about physical pain with my question, but whatever

13
How do you quantify hurt? How do you, knowing how others have been hurt, or the shape or structure of hurt, hold some kind of answer to 'was it really as bad as you think it was?' How do you know how bad you had it? How do you frame it?

this is not really a small nor random question, huh

Oh, if you've got recommendations for the hack and slash stuff, I'm all ears. I've got a small list going.

I've been playing Morrowind through the OpenMW adaptation; there's a mod that configurably randomizes the destinations that doors or door-like transitions to, and it's fucking me up man

I've got a reusable teleporter to a house mod that is entirely inner cells and each of its several dozen doors takes you to some entirely different interior cell and you end up with this massive hypothetical snarl of a path through eight radically different (and maybe dangerous) rooms to get back to that other cell that had something useful behind it, like a merchant with a fat wallet or a supply of throwing knives

but otherwise i was making a little home base in the interior of some tower, which served as the connection point for two entirely different cities, and with each city having dozens of doors on their own, you'd pivot through town trying to figure out if the fletcher door takes you to some ash cave or the mage's guild or, or some entirely different guy's house

i'm also playing primarily with the intent to fully decorate/occupy the big house mod from above with all the goodies I find in the world. The collecting and the displaying of random junk and treasure is actually kind of the only reason I'm playing Morrowind, now that I think of it, but i frigging love it

bicycle bicycle bycicle popsicle bystander bisexual

It's a little squeaky, but it's the thin-tire street bike I've always wanted, and it turns heads from all the cycling enthusiasts who haven't seen something vintage riding around amidst all the high-end mountain or e-bikes. Red definitely seems to be my color this year.

Definitely needs a new seat with more cushion, though. Ow.
