Life Advice / Considering buying a new PC (Cyber Monday)
« on: November 27, 2017, 09:23:42 pm »
Please do not quote:
Hello My fellow tech heads

I keep my computers for 8 to 9 years (longer if possible until the hard drives burn out or something) and I have a repeat history of that. It's a long term  investment.

So here's what I'm looking at:

I'm thinking one time Microsoft Office (NOT subscribing to 365 and paying monthly), and possibly expanding to more RAM.

Issues:
1.) I am concerned about the lack of optical drive. Is this a problem? The world going to flash drives and cloud?

2.) Is photoshop worth the $79? (and is that a permanent thing or a damn subscription?)

3.) Other considerations

This a a cyber monday thing, so I have to act fast actually to save the money.

Thoughts?

Life Advice / Mirroring laptop and computer displays on TV
« on: November 26, 2017, 01:14:34 pm »
Please do not quote:

Hello fellow formites who are tech inclined.

Happily, I mirrored my laptop screen onto a 40 inch TV (HDMI input) via an attachment. I belive it's "WIDI." That's fantastic. I enjoy seeing my screen there.

Issue: I can't seem to mirror games such as Fallout 4, on the TV screen. I can mirror other, less intensive games, but there may be lag (between laptop screen and TV Screen).

Is anyone else familiar with these types of things? Is it simply that the technology isn't fantasitc yet? Is it that the TV isn't the same as a game / computer monitor, or is the wireless signal just always going to cause delays? Can any of these be solved with a physical HDMI cable?

Thank you for your consideration,
Truean

Life Advice / Cell Phones LG G6, Galaxy S8 and perhaps others?
« on: August 24, 2017, 09:40:21 pm »
Hi,

Nice to see everyone at 12 bay again. If it's ok, I have some cell phone questions I imagine you might help with? Hopefully, it might also be a basis for a nice conversation as well. Basically it's between LG G6 and S8 on Verizon. I currently have an unlimited data plan and need a device to use it on.

I care for and get extended life from electronics. Just bought an LG G6, and I have 14 days maximum to return it. I originally wanted an S8, but gave this a try.

A.) Battery Life:
Is it me, or do these new top of the line 2017 cell phones use batteries A LOT? Even the S8 has like 5 hours of screen time per full charge? G6 gets about 4 to 4 1/2 hours of screen time. I get that it's more complicated than that with several variables, but still? Basically, there are tons of features but no power to back them up? What is going on with these things? I'm also seeing some surprising results with battery life. I still have an old Motorola Razor that can do a fair deal for being 6 years old pretty much all day without concern for battery life (and it's been through a TON of cycles).

Can anyone help me understand the reasoning behind these seemingly difficult to understand things with battery.

B.) Charging:
"Rapid charging" and wireless charging seem to be major selling points. However, it seems that there are some fairly slow charging issues as well? If a full charge gets you maybe 5 hours of on screen time, and charging takes an hour, then isn't that a bit odd? Am I missing something here?

C.) Use and Power:
Similar to the "Battery Life" argument, it seems the devices drain very quickly when their features are employed. Am I missing something or is this a glaring flaw? Yes I get that more use = more power drain, but there has to be some measure to compensate for this, because it seems like even with the screen setting and usage low, these things just drain?

D.) Misc. Obligatory rant against AI:
I hate it. No one asked for Bixby, and it has a dedicated physical button on the S8. The G6 is thankfully lacking in on board AI with the exception of an optional Google Assistant. Even if you assume AI is good, nobody is going to outshine google with proprietary software with the possible exception of Apple's Siri (who I also don't like).

Do you have an opinion on which 2017 phone is better? I'm not personally looking for an Apple iproduct, but I imagine some of you out there like that type of phone. Maybe there are some others people favor?

Any thoughts on which is better between the S8 and G6? Battery? Charging? Features? Etc?

Life Advice / Slowly dying hard drive? Possible replacement, repair?
« on: June 27, 2017, 06:34:56 pm »
Received a couple hard drive error messages, might backup where I can, but yeah.... Slowly....

Strategy: purchase nice computers, get as much out of them as possible. 2009 Windows 7, 6 GB RAM. About 9 year lifespan and still going.
Hoping to resolve a couple things before I deal with this, but I imagine instability is now a clock....

I realize things have changed. I do not generally like Windows 10 due to built in spyware, cloud storage, and worst of all, Office 365 you basically rent (I would pay more for an excel version I owned or only pay once for, please). I am saddened that windows 10 isn't going anywhere. Used to be you RENTED / scheduled computing time from the university mainframe on essentially a "dumb machine." The PC (Personal computer) decentralized computing power, setting it and us free. Now, we're going back to the centralized model with cloud computing and "software as a service." [shudder, end rant].

A.) Looking for the option of replacement.

Office 365: Again, I hate software as a service. Is there any way I can get a regular license for Microsoft office I don't have to pay a monthly fee for? I will pay for it, because as long as I keep computers, it just makes more sense.

1) Maybe this:

Maybe this:
http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/inspiron-3668-desktop/fdcwgam241s

2.) Microsoft Office:
Microsoft Office Home and Business 2016 + $229.99 <--- Do I need this?
Dell Recommended

As far as I can tell, the only difference between the two is, the more expensive one has outlook.

Microsoft Office Home and Student 2016 + $149.99 <--- Or, Will this get me Microsoft Office without subscription fees?

Please tell me this will replace Office 365's subscription based model and do everything Microsoft office usually does?

Basically, I will be a higher fixed price now, to make the payment all upfront, rather than deal with monthly or yearly subscriptions. I do not want any software I have to pay renewal fees for, including windows. Please do not let me get stuck with this.

3.) USB ports:
Must have. Line-in access has saved me too many times to do things strictly wireless.

4.) Processor:
This is a long term purchase, meant to last, as its predecessors, for several years.
7th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-7700 processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.20 GHz) <-- I imagine this is not bad?

5.) Graphics card:
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 750Ti with 2GB DDR5 graphics memory

Do I need more than this to play most modern games? Do I need more than this to play games coming out in the next couple years?

6.) Dual Monitors:
Can this run two monitors at once?

B.) Possible hard drive repair/ hard drive replacement? Worth it?

Thank you for your time,
Truean

I have a verbal job offer saying "it's official." I filled out paperwork for taxes, shook my supervisor's hand, looked at where I'll be working, parking pass application, passed the drug test, medical test clearance, and all that. I even have a start date

I just don't have a final written offer, and the same HR lady who said "it's official," told me that she'd try to send it this week. It's Thursday....

My supervisor knows all this and he's actually pretty awesome about it. We're both waiting on the actual written final letter....

I want to be a good person generally where possible and polite if I can. I also don't want to burn any bridges, especially for the other temps in the place I'm leaving. More or less, I don't want to be a jerk. I ... am not entirely sure what to put here. This is perhaps the only good thing to happen in my life in years and I don't want to be a jerk or anything.

I also don't want to end up screwed.

Honest suggestions?

I have set up a very nice clothing and leather industry, and made several masterwork leather armors out of grizzly bear leather for my melee dwarves to try on for now. (My metalworks is coming along nicely, and I'd like to throw metal on overtop of it later, but for now...). I have also made several pairs of masterwork pig tail cloth trousers.

None of the dwarves will wear these.

Military uniform includes leather armor.

I know a couple civilians who need new clothes....

Nobody will change their clothes to the newer, nicer stuff.

What am I doing wrong?

How do I get these dwarves to just put on the nice clothes and armor I made for them instead of having them wear worn out junk? They each have a large room with cabinet in it even....

Issue: I need to compress a great many image files for long term storage on a mass media storage device.

I have over 112 hardcopy books (which I have paid for already, long ago). They take up physical space and don't travel well. I can't bring myself to throw them out when I've managed to preserve them for years and paid for them.

So, I intend to take pictures of each and every page, place them in a folder of some kind and digitally store them. The average page length is 500 pages. Uncompressed, let's call that 500 KB of uncompressed computerized storage per book, average x 112 = 60GB .
500 x 112 = 56,000 pages / images. (JPEG Files).

Question(s):

1.) Can a great many (estimated 56,000) image files be compressed with something like winzip?
2.) Can it be made into something like a PDF? (Somehow throwing all pages of the file into a word document and saving as PDF?).

Thank you for your time.

Life Advice / Sick, and trying to deal with it.
« on: April 15, 2016, 07:21:54 am »
I have a fluctuating temperature that has topped out at 102.3 F. (Normal being 98.6). It goes down after taking products with acetaminophen like theraflu, or just ibprophen. I don't mix the two and am careful about the max amounts. I'm staying in bed, and started putting a cold wet washcloth on my forehead.

Oddly, despite having a fever, I feel cold. To spare the worst details, let's just say massive headache and productive cough (yellow, I'm sorry but it matters).

I am a little worried about all of this as I'm not sure, but I think 103 is a dangerous fever that should get a call to a doctor. I dislike taking meds but I absolutely will in this circumstance. The fever is the primary thing that worries me.

Additional Points:
A.) Should I bundle up in bed? I felt cold so I did, and I fear that may have helped the fever get up there? I'm not sure. I feel like it's weird wanting to be very warm when I have a fever? Stay in bed with lots of blankets or less or no?
B.) Plenty of water.
C.) When to call a doctor? Again 103 isn't good and I've come close to it. Ideas.
D.) Any other points?

Thank you

PS My dad got me sick.

Life Advice / Dealing with a ... persistant recruiter/HR hiring person.
« on: January 22, 2016, 01:49:57 pm »
Please do not quote, thank you:

I have the possibility to get an actual real estate attorney job in house, which would rock. It would be the answer to my long nightmare that comes from having a conscience and ethics... and essentially turning in people for utterly atrocious behavior that got them convicted and jailed.

The problem, the HR person is a bit overzealous. I've noted privilege being a great big gag order I can't break. She doesn't seem to get it.

She doesn't seem to like that I said I've done over $100 Million in real estate transactions.... Start with the slow pitch

Look, if you sell 5 houses at $200,000 a pop, then that's $1,000,000.... Deed work, purchase agreement/land contract, easements, etc. I've done this stuff for years, and that's just single family homes. Apartment buildings easily sell for $1,000,000 (depending on number of units, occupancy etc).

Commercial buildings go for a few Million, and Industrial..... Yeah.

What I'm saying isn't hard to get really. I've probably dealt in transactions of well over that amount, if we're talking value of the property, easy.
Even if you want to talk about the amount of money I've generated in fees (sadly for my old bosses and not for myself), we're talking an absolute crapload. $100 / deed x 3,000 deeds a year was $300,000 I made him on deeds alone.... (and I got exactly nothing of that). That's just deeds, never mind the cases, or purchase contracts, or leases, or anything else. Off the deeds alone, if I made him $300,000 a year for 5 years, then that's $1.2 Million I made my boss over 5 years... just on deeds alone.

I absolutely have done everything I'm claiming to have done, but damned if I can show her proof of it, because a.) old boss has retired and everything, b.) annoying privilege (yeah, even the transfer papers for the house or building or whatever), and c.) Jesus, there's been so much of it over the years that tracking it all down and accounting for it would be a full time job right here.

What do I do with this HR woman? Do I draft up a report or something giving her generalities (because what else could I do)? Something else? I don't get her. I understand they've had some verification issues with other people in the past but really?

I just really want/need, and dare I say deserve this job.... I just can't sit there and brag about all I've done. That's kinda frowned upon.

What do I even do?

Life Advice / How hard is it to learn grant writing?
« on: January 21, 2016, 06:01:13 pm »
I've been sort of ushered towards perhaps a role in a non profit 503(c). I can do pretty much all of it except I'm a little leery of the grant writing, which I have not done before.

That said, I've done tons of other stuff with writing in a LOT of different ways, etc. Is this stuff easy to learn or is there some trick to it? Any resources, experience, or ideas would be very helpful if you'd be willing to provide those.

Thank you,
Truean

Life Advice / Changing (back) to a career feild?
« on: January 02, 2016, 06:03:15 am »
I am considering trying to go back into statistics. I did a TON of that stuff in college and won competitive scholarships no one else qualified for in years. An old and notoriously grouchy math professor demanded to know "why you didn't major in MATH!??" upon reading my competitive study. I did econ, among other things.

I would imagine being a lawyer who communicates well would help, but perhaps some recruiters don't. They might not see the connection between law and stats. They're wrong, because I can actually explain it incredibly well in plain English with superb public speaking skills and an intense knowledge of real world business and real life.

So I'm typing out a request to people here on 12 bay. I'm asking about possibly changing to this career field of numbers (changing back to it). I'm not as up to date on the software (though I remember how to use it from before). SAS, SPSS, Excel, etc. Modeling? Etc?

Tips? Advice? Please, anything would be helpful.

Some of you know I like furniture and building things. I used to be fond of creating my own some time ago. Now isn't a good time for that, but I still appreciate it. Hence this thread.... I even tend to find this useful from a human (Dwarf?) perspective in game, unless you imagine all chairs being basically the same or something? I don't know. It's got more of a real life bent to it though, clearly.

Most furniture works. I tend to have a thing for convertible, hand made, and/or innovative. I might (hopefully) make some of my own again someday.

What is this: It's an out of the way place to discuss neato little things about furniture. Sometimes it gives fun things to look at/think about/build. it's about living space.

General Discussion / Things that made you feel better today.
« on: March 02, 2015, 08:07:29 pm »
Life can be really hard, and feeling better would be good for everyone.

This is a thread for things that made you feel better today, including long term goals, ways you met certain needs, things that helped you get through a problem you had, and/or ways to get past problems and bad thoughts. (Bad thoughts are ones that make you feel bad here).

Rules:

1.) No being mean; the rest of the internet and world are often that.
2.) Nothing sexual, please. Speaking of things the rest of the internet is....
3.) More as and if the need arises.
