So I've been digging into this mod a bit from the outside in, like poking through the manual and guides and messing around in adventure mode since I still find that fun to do. And I was gonna give running an actual orc fort a try, though I felt a bit confused at the embark screen seeming to limit items like seeds or alcohol to dwarf stuff. Is this as intended or have I somehow horribly broke things?

Also with the two versions of the mod being around, which is actually the most feature complete at this point? Legacy or the new one? I noticed Legacy seems to have more playable forts and such than the newer one.

Edit: also a silly tiny question/possible bug report? It seems like I can't disable naga through the launcher either. I was trying to cut down on civ bloat in worldgen and they didn't feel that interesting to me at the moment, though there's not much I can do about them if the checkbox doesn't seem to work?

Life Advice / Gunner chan asks about mods again! (Morrowind)
« on: August 22, 2015, 09:41:08 pm »
Hello, yes this is gunner-chan. Hello doge.

Okay so I'm in the process of reinstalling morrowind, and so far I've installed Overhaul and rebirth, and I'm definately throwing Tamreil Rebuilt and Silgrad tower in too. But well I wanna know since I've been out for a while, what other mods are recommended?

I know less generic NPCs is a big one, but any other suggestions? Especially leveling mods or new areas, any good ones? Any fun roleplayish mods too? I think it was like 2009 last time I looked for anything morrowind.

Creative Projects / Gunner-Chan and the unexpected black library.
« on: July 26, 2015, 03:23:03 am »
So, as I mentioned before I rediscovered my pile of warhammer 40k books. And wanting to keep a bit of a record of my progress through them I said I might collect my thoughts on the books as I go through them. So thus, this topic is made!

Now, admittedly. I'm not the best writer, reviewer or even have the best taste. But I decided why the hell not? It keeps me typing, reading and opens potential for discussion so I should go ahead and do it.

So to get started... First book I went through, Fifteen hours.

Spoiler: Cover (click to show/hide)

Fifteen Hours is the first of the black librarys "Imperial guard" series. Detailing unconnected and varied stories about different regiments of the imperial guard and their missions and duties. While not a proper series with an overarching narrative, it seems more aimed to give a genred experience for fans of the imperial guard to get some adventures and stories to fold into their lore.

This is also the authors first published novel according to both the book itself and my quick research. Which is a bit worrying to someone just cracking the book open for the first time, given it creates a sudden expectation of quality that's not wholly flattering.

The first chapter indeed didn't do much to bolster my opinion, a disconnected and unexplained intro at the beginning of the book details a guardsman laying grievously wounded in a no mans land. We aren't told who this man is, why he's there. Or what there is of his world besides the frantic thoughts running through his mind. And just as quick as we get a chance to start piecing things together we're thrown into the first chapter of the book proper.

We are then introduced to our protagonist, Arvin Larn. An unremarkable man from an unremarkable world. The Agriworld of Jumal IV. A few people may in fact recall Jumal IV as the home of the Jumal first regiment, also known as the Lucky aces thanks to their survival of a warp storm. This is however not that story. And Larn is on top of that, thoroughly not a lucky man.As I mentioned earlier, the first chapter is one of the least interesting parts of this book. We're introduced to our protagonists family, characters that aren't given much of a chance to be anything other than humanizing aspects of the wider character of Larn. But given the nature of the imperial guard in 40k this is about as much as can be expected. And throughout this up till his arrival on the parade grounds for mustering there's a certain sense of something... Off. Which Ill get to in just a moment.

Afterwards we are shown a fairly vivid and at that also decently accurate portrayal of life aboard a imperial guard troopship, zooming through the warp at it's destination. Scanlon starts redeeming himself here, as the more colorful life aboard the ship is entertaining. And a few dark laughs are had at a squadmates expense due to an invisible grenade. Shortly after we're introduced to another "Character" in a meta sense. That Scanlon begins to rely upon somewhat through this work. An interlude. After this interlude is the moment that stuck with me the most through the book, the harrowing shooting down and crash landing of the company's lander. It's brutal and relentless. To the point that I wondered for a moment if Scanlon had some steam he wanted to blow off, and it ended up blowing in the face (In one case, literally) of our unlucky protagonist and the rest of the 6th company, Jumael 14th Volunteers

This is my largest complaint with Fifteen hours, Scanlon allows this to become something routine. We quickly learn that when focus switches, bad things happen. And happen they do right away. Without going into much detail, Larns company is detached from his regiment and sent to the wrong planet. Bad things follow all throughout from this first mistake. It is there that Larn meets another group of characters that carry him through the rest of the story. In short order, we meet the diminutive and sardonic Davik, the obligitory heart and also big guy of the squad Bulaven. The negative and hostile Zeebers and... The unfortunately named Scholar. Yes I'm sure that's not his real name, but we never hear his real name.

The rest of the story is a slow paced, but still entertaining adventure through the horrors of trench warfare. Yes, trench warfare. This is what I said I'd get back to, between the longcoats, trenches and oppressing gray and cold, the majority of Fifteen hours reads like world war 1, done warhammer 40k style. This isn't a bad thing, but it's not exactly ambitious combined with the somewhat stock nature of the main cast. You don't need to be original, that is true but there was always a feeling that a little more could of been done with the themes than Scanlon ultimately left to formula.

As a story fixed on trench warfare, much of it is spent waiting and brooding between highs of action. Swapping between long moments of introspection and bickering and combat. Both are handled well, and with no expense paid to show how nasty both can be. As the story draws to a close however, the grim realization that the reader already knows the ending begins to set in.

Ultimately. Would I suggest someone read Fifteen hours? Personally, I would reccomend it should the reader have an interest in the first world war and trench warfare. The fact that this is a book published by the black library is often something pushed a bit to the side and it ultimately feels like Scanlon did want to write about the first world war. Though, yes I personally enjoyed reading this book, and I can't help but wonder where scanlon could of went from here given some time. As my research leads me to find that outside of a companion short story contained in the Imperial Guard volume one omnibus, he has no further entries into the black library.

As for what I'm going to read next? I'm currently undecided. If I want to trawl through the imperial guard series before moving on that would make my next book Death world, by Steve Lyons. But I have a wealth of choices and variety is the spice of life after all.

Also to any prospective writers reading this, I would not put a huge clue as to the meaning of something you want a slight mystery in the very title and tagline of your book. While they ultimately made me choose to read this book first, it doesn't make much sense to hint at why "Fifteen hours" is such an important time scale and leave it as the galaxy's worst kept secret for a few chapters. It's silly.

So thanks to GoG helping kickstart me into a nostalgia trip, I've been playing Chaos gate lately, that works fine and it's not the core of this post however!

While I could get chaos gate running wonderfully in a window, scaled up so I don't need a magnifying glass to play. I can't seem to do the same to Final liberation at all! It's like DXwind doesn't grab onto it so I gotta play it in awkward bordered no alt-tabbable fullscreen.

Anyone have experience using DXwind or similar programs on this game? This is a bit flustering. Was really looking forward to smashing some orks with Baneblades and artillery and shit again.

Life Advice / PC controllers?!
« on: January 24, 2015, 07:58:52 pm »
Okay, mostly I don't expect to get much of a response on this. But hey why not.

I've recently been trying to break back into fighting games and SHMUPS, though I'm beginning to hit a wall... My ps3 controller. Now I know it's old hat to blame the controller, but in this case this thing just doesn't give me a good game feel at all using it. The pad feels weird to use and surpisingly enough wears into my thumb more than doing metalworking or gunsmithing anything like that. The buttons are squishy and weird, the l2 and r2 triggers are USELESS for anything digital... Not to mention it likes to lose connection for some reason, I don't understand why at all.

What's a good but not overly pricey alternative to this? Preferably something with a snappy or clicky feel to it instead of the pressure sensitive squishyness of the ps3. At LEAST six total buttons too, given most of the fighters I like are SNK ones I can go as low as 4, and shmups rarely need more than 3. But 6 is a good number total for other games or genres.

Life Advice / Streaming and shit
« on: November 23, 2014, 04:05:10 pm »
So yeah, some time ago I used to occasionally stream stuff on livestream back when that was a bit of a fad around here. That was... What, like 3-4 years ago? Anyway...

I've been thinking about doing it again on a sorta small scale since I know some friends of mine used to like watching how I did things in some games. But livestream was... Pretty bad. What exactly are my alternatives and how hard/easy are they to use.

I DO know that Twitch and Hitbox exist, though I don't exactly know how they are to use on the streamers end.

Life Advice / Something I just can't remember.
« on: August 01, 2014, 11:41:42 pm »
I've actually been reminded a few times lately of some old book I used to occasionally thumb through, or maybe a few of them. When I was little I remember running into some old bigass medical book. Like really big. I can't remember if the covers were blue or brown at this point but it was also definitely hardcover. I also remember some brownish pages in it that had some kind of diagnosis flowchart thing.

I think it was some sort of home reference book. I just really, really wanna remember what it was since I remember it off and on and I'm always like "What was that book again? What was it actually called?"

Just wondering if anyone knows what the hell I'm talking about.

Life Advice / Simcity 4 and stuff.
« on: June 15, 2014, 04:05:13 pm »
Alright so, normally I'd think I should dig around for a topic to ask this in but then I realized I got some pretty damn specific questions. Anyway...

I've been getting that itch to go play simcity again. And I'm in the situation where I can actually play most of the games outside of the new one with either some or minimal effort. But I've decided I'm gonna play the fourth one since I like the whole region thing and I'd love to eventually make a big growing region to admire.

Anyway, I know most people use network addon mod to unfuck the game at least. And there's some other good mods like the agricultural one to fix that little broken mechanic. But last time this mood hit I got yanked out of it too fast by somewhat odd circumstances to really get a feel for what else might be missing or need improvement... So what's the general bay12 opinion on modding simcity 4? What addons and bits should I look for?

Also importantly, what's this CAM mod I see everywhere that always seems to be in a few dozen pieces? People seem to love it but I can't exactly find out what it actually is or does.

Life Advice / Overly specific game modding questions! Stalker edition!
« on: November 30, 2013, 12:56:13 am »
So in the cataclysm topic the Misery mod for stalker CoP came up, and I have not really got around to playing much CoP after finishing it some years ago on a painfully underpowered computer. But back then I used to play it vanilla, and then with the very early version of SMRTER. Most recently I tried playing it through with complete since I do genuinely like complete for SoC and CS, though they do sometimes feel like they streamline the game a little too much.

So my question is, across the three games what are some of the better bigger mods available? I've heard bits and pieces here and there but I just don't know what would ultimately appeal to me the most since the complete mods are very vanilla feeling.

I'm most curious about Clear sky and Call of Prypyat. Since I really liked clear sky and CoP is one I feel I haven't given enough love to.

Life Advice / Soundfonts, dosbox and darklands
« on: February 18, 2013, 12:04:47 pm »
Okay so I've recently accidentally readdicted myself to darklands, which is totally fine. But one thing that's currently bugging the hell out of me is finding a way to get the sound effects just right.

For anyone that doesn't know, darklands uses midi instructions for sound effects. As intended this made arrows make a little thwipping noise, guns make a pop and swords made a metallic clang noise as you'd expect. The problem is... The windows 7 midi emulation is bad enough I need to use soundfonts for midi in older games to be listenable.

The other problem is this seems to fuck with the sound effects to no end. Weapons sound like insturment twangs, stringed insturment hits or even in one case metal drums which makes combat sound like poorly designed sting music or an island holiday. Arrows tend to be silent or make an ear peircing zwee noise. Guns sound like someone hitting a tinny gong with a hammer.

Just... Is there something I can use that would emulate a 1992 era sound blaster well enough to get the old sounds back? Or at least something similar to them? I'm really enjoying playing again but this keeps pulling me right out of the game.

Edit: Turns out it was a bug caused by file swapping that a patch or something did. It's fixed now. Derp

Life Advice / Chrome odditys?
« on: December 28, 2012, 03:04:44 am »
Well, i've been using chrome issue free for a very long time now. Though now...

Not that long ago, chrome just broke. Broke like hell. It wouldn't launch and apparently it was because chrome.dll whent missing. That got fixed. Though I got a seemingly harmless error about a missing xpcom.dll

Now chrome crashes whenever the "Save as" dialog should pop up. I have no idea what's doing this and after some shit tonight I'm not in the mood to tackle this myself. Anyone know what I should do about this bullshit?

Other Games / Cladun X2 - a game about dungeons and stuff!
« on: August 20, 2012, 08:31:14 pm »
Cladun X2 is, at it's core a game about dungeons. Random dungeons, premade dungeons, dungeons that are actually pirate ships and so on. It also is a game about customization. The characters, their equipment, and even the music if you know the variety of MML they use are all yours to change and play with as you see fit. And it's a recent release on steam now too, meaning you don't need a PSP to play anymore.

While simplistic on the surface, there's a ton of complexity inside so many of the games mechanics. Magic circles in particular WILL make or break your attempts at dungeon running post tutorial. Yet despite this there's really very, very little hard information for anything online.

Cladun X2 Edit wiki (Currently PSP only) : http://cladunx2thisisa.wikia.com/wiki/Cladun_x2:_This_is_a_Wiki

Cladun X2 gameplay wiki (Very neglected) : http://cladunx2.wikia.com/wiki/ClaDun_X2_Wiki#Welcome_to_the_Cladun_X2_Wiki

Outside of a somewhat short and not exactly trustworthy guide on Gamefaqs this is all I could find for information on the games actual mechanics. And both are very poorly managed. So as I brought up in the NIS games topic I hope this topic here can become a repository of actual useful information and edits on both the PSP and PC versions.

Ill come back to the topic myself in a little bit to share some little observations and discoveries I've made in the 20 hours I've sank into the game already. Hopefully enough to help anyone just getting started out.

Life Advice / Headphones/Earbuds
« on: May 27, 2012, 04:41:32 pm »
Okay. I'm getting sick of this. It seems every pair I get goes out in a month or two and I want something that lasts.

Every single time too, it always starts with the left channel, usually letting me mess with the wire to get it working, then it goes out completely. Then the other side dies around a week later.

So I'm looking for suggestions. With a few points in mind.

1. Durability, THIS. IS. IMPORTANT. I live a rather chaotic yet occasional sedentary life most of the time. There can be anywhere from 0 to sometimes NINE people all crouding around me making noise and moving around. Sometimes someone has accidentally sat on the wire or tugged it, I'm sure this makes lifespan shorter for these things. I don't expext something made for this kind of haphazard treatment off and on, but I do want something that's gonna survive contact with well. My life.

2. Quality. Obviously. I listen to a lot of music. It helps me relax. Not to mention I play a lot of FPS games, knowing what is where and having good sound quality overall is extremely important to me.

3. Convenience. Because lots of people are around and talking to me, sometimes I need to split attention. So I need to be able to remove or not listen to an ear so I can hear my friends sometimes.

4. Size, mostly. I don't want something that's gonna take up a ton of room. Or on the other hand something that's gonna go missing if my daughter has been looking around my bed for whatever reason.

So yeah. Any suggestions guys? Earbuds are preferred for points 3 and 4, but a set will do. Also note that certain obligations towards shy and concerned friends mean I CANNOT accept a full headset. It has to be listening only. I'd prefer amazon links to whatever is recommended, since I really can't order from anywhere else if I make my choice.

Spoiler: Read this (click to show/hide)
It's always the stranger missions people remember you for.

Metavira Island. 1998. Nuclear experiments done on the island in the 40s were found to have an unexpected effect on the local flora. The trees started mutating into what's now known as a fallow tree. The sap of these trees was discovered by a team of scientists lead by Jack and Brenda Richards to be a near wonder drug. The advances being made in the name of medical science were simply unprecedented in nearly all of human history before.

Of course, philantrophy always goes to the wayside as soon as someone else sees a place to turn a profit. Enter Lucas Santiago, Jacks assistant and one of the meanest most vicious sons of bitches you could ever know. In the span of a few days, he burnt Jacks research to the ground, gunned down several of his workers, and looked to be ready to take out Jack and Brenda themselves.

This is where I came in. Jack had contacted me, why? Ill never be sure. He found me and invited me. In a few short days and with some connections to the newly formed AIM organization, the island was retaken peice by bloody peice, and at the final moment, when Santiago threatened to take the years of work down with him in a last spiteful act of revenge, I had the pleasure of putting a bullet in his skull. No more fighting, no more of this senseless violence, no more Santiago. All the same, some friends and connections had been made, and I supposed I gained a reputation.

2005, seven years later. Someone called me up on that reputation.

I was in Prauge when I got an Email from one Enrico Chivaldori, I'm no idiot. I've been watching the news. I know this man is supposed to be dead. But I respond back to him. Faking ones death isn't unheard of in troubled times. He agrees to meet with me a few days later at the Charles Bridge.

I go to the meeting, to my surpise he seems to be the real thing. Enrico Chivaldori. The former King of Arulco, jailed for killing his father with poison and then firebombed by an angry mob. Yet the man stands before me and hands over my payment just as promised. Five million in untraced smuggled diamonds. Enough to spend another few years with my remaining savings comfortably, just like after Metavira.

It's time for a short history lesson, before the meeting I'd contacted RIS to do some backround on  this man and his homeland. In short, Arulco used to be quite the place. A former spanish colony until 1908, untouched and neutral through the conflicts that would engulf the world for nearly four decades later.

Though small, Alruco was a prosperous agricultural nation, rich in natural resources and in bright and skilled people. While there were only 9 larger settlements, things were good and prosperous for the people, their king was elected rather than born in to prove their legitimacy to the throne, and the Chivaldori and Cordona familys often in power were fair and just.

This changed in 1998, after the close election that proved Enrico Chivaldoris legitimacy, his father the former king was found dead. Poisoned. Evidence lead to Enrico Chivaldori being the assassin, and after a quick trial that was to end in his execution, his wife, Deidranna Reitmann was given rule of Arulco as her right.

In a few short years, Deidranna turned Arulco into her sick playground. Farming and agriculture was violently discouraged, the farmers were pressed into the mines and treated like slaves. Education and even medicine were given no importance in her new regime, the most brutal example reaching it's head when the public school in Cambria was bombed. All aspects of government and law were restructured to put Deidranna and her elite, her friends and strongmen to be placed at the top. Crushing the rest of the tiny country under their collective heel.

Enrico Chivaldori wanted me to put a stop to this. Go in, knock the bitch's regime on it's ass and take no one in a Arulcain military uniform prisoner. Nice job I thought to myself. Me, some more hired guns and whoever wants to resist this wannabe dictator against an army.

This will be either one hell of a fight, or one hell of a way to go out. I'm fine with either at this point.

There were two other hired guns I knew would work with me, both fought with me on Metavira so I knew they'd jump at any chance to get back into the fight. One was known to me as Deadeye, simple name, but that's the kind of person she was. To the point, consise. She lost her rifle on Metavira during a mortar attack but her aim was just as good as always. The other was known to me as Shadowdump. I never asked what was with the name, never wanted to KNOW what was with the name. But his skill with anything that explodes was second to almost no one else I saw on Metavira.

This still left us with only three troopers against an army, this meant I needed to look around for more help. The landing might be rough, the only point of entry my pilot sees as possible is the western half of Omerta, there's a window in three days where the closest surface to air missile site will be unable to fire on that location, that's when we make our move. The landing may be rough, military activity has increased in Omerta the days following Enricos contact with me. I suspect a military operation in the area may be coming soon so our window is closing, and fast.

And that's why I need help. Three men, no matter how skilled can retake an entire country. We need a foothold, and for that Ill need at least Two more men, no more than Three. The pilot can't transport more than six men into Arulco in the time and speed we need to arrive. Basic equipment and a $3000 down payment will be provided. Anything, and I mean anything within reason when we hit the ground goes. And I will not take anything you find on the battlefields and citys we encounter, anything you get your grubby mitts on is yours. Finally anyone sticking to the end will get a share of the payment Enrico has given me.

A capacity for violence is helpful, medical training is very much currently in need as well. So I ask anyone reciving this message, contact me, and quickly. Arulco isn't going to wait for this chance again, and neither will I.

Life Advice / Starmap creator?
« on: May 02, 2012, 01:15:52 am »
I have no clue about what I'd use for this, despite THINKING I knew something that could do it. I'm currently in the situation that I'd like to create a starmap for a sort of fictional galaxy. Only I have no way of how I can manage this and have it be detailed and interesting.

Are there any programs out there that would allow me to make star systems and detail planets and other objects in them? And maybe even link them together somehow?
