Well, most of you don't know this--mostly because I don't advertise it--but I am a writer and an editor. That would account for my lack of visual creativity on here: I don't have any! However, my 'zine, Literary Orphans, has a very special issue slated to come out this month, and we're looking for a few good artists to fit the bill. Do you have what it takes?

The process will be as follows.

1.) If you are interested, you will e-mail the art editor at least three pieces of preexisting art, or a link to an online portfolio. The e-mail address is art@literaryorphans.org.
2.) Your art will be reviewed. If your style is developed enough and catches our attention, we will end up sending you a story or two that will be in the upcoming issue.
3.) You will create a piece based on what you have read. After you submit it, we will pair it with the piece on our site, and you will be featured in the bio page.

This is a fantastic chance for exposure, my friends--it's a way to prove your artistic mettle in the superhero arena! 110,000 readers worldwide is certainly nothing to scoff at, wouldn't you agree? On top of drastically improving your personal marketability via your personal portfolio, you will also have your foot in the door for future issues, which may end up being paid on a per piece basis. Our magazine caters to a darker, grittier side of literary and visual art, but all styles welcome! Please check out the following links for a better idea about who we are and what we are doing. Bay12 is full of you really great artist types, and that's why I'm botherin' you at all.

Drunk Fortress is pretty much what it sounds like: Everybody plays a year while taking careful notes and screenshots... Inebriated. Welcome to Hell and enjoy your play.

!!DRUNKFORT!! Rules:
1.) Pregame your year by drinking. Drink until you feel you are unquestionably inebriated.
2.) Start your post by telling us how much you consumed before starting. Pictures of beverages welcome, but not necessary.
3.) Try to dorf all of those who wish to be dorfed and haven't been yet; all undorfed past Overseers should be dorfed as well.
4.) Write out your log as you play while taking screenshots; try to limit this to ONE post in the thread, otherwise it gets cluttered and hard to follow! Drink at your leisure. Whenever you finish a drink, let the reader know by writing about it in the post.
5.) Finish out your year, save, and upload to DFFD. Total your number of drinks at the bottom of your post, along with a link to the new file save. You may make a drunken statement or quote in the last line for posterity, hilarity, and flavor.
6.) (Fort Optional) If you completed the year, instate one rule to be followed by future overseers of the same fort; they will all need to drink when this rule is violated or happened upon. Every consecutive rule lasts until the fort collapses--reclaims don't currently count for cumulative rules of past forts.
7.) Drink lots of water and take a nap.

Current Overseers [Order Decided on First Drunk First Serve Principle]:
*Year One: Bogwedgle
Year Two: Shoruke
Year Three: Scruffy
Year Four: Onciblu
Year Five: Shoruke
Year Six: Scruffy
Year Seven: CLOVER MAGIC!

*"Year" means "turn" in most instances of drunken buffoonery.

Year Seven: Clover's Turn

Yeah, a dwarf fortress played by humans trying to be dwarves. You can guess who I'm voting for.
Inducted by a voting landslide into the Hall of Legends! Thank you all so much!

Creative Projects / Cover Photo Competition
« on: August 31, 2012, 06:08:57 pm »
I'm not sure if this will get any hits, but it's worth a try. You guys tend to be wayyyy more creative and artistic than I am.

So everybody on Facebook has a Timeline now. Which sucks. But since everybody here on Bay12 is amazing, I was thinking that some of the more artistically-inclined might be able to make me a Timeline cover photo. I honest to God can't think of anything, and the big gray blotch looks so ugly and empty! I have some pictures of myself you can use upon request, and some themes you might be interested in: China (I go there often and have lived there on multiple occasions), the cold wintery North (my true and only home), or a post-apocalyptic wasteland (I'm just waiting for it to go down). I believe in artistic license, however, and those themes are simply suggestions. That being said, if you just want to browse pictures on my Facebook and maybe pick something randomly to make something with, shoot me a message on here and we can be "friends."  :P

For those of you non-Facebookers, the Timeline cover photo is wider than it is high. Here is a sample of a friend's profile for a rough reference.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ideally the picture would look cool without seeing the top half if it is indeed that high, simply because it only shows about half of it when you go to a profile without scrolling up (Yet another reason Timeline is stupid--thanks, Suckerberg).

If you win, you'll likely have some of your art at the top of a very public forum for a long time--I'm quite active on Facebook but hate change.

Tl;dr--Make me a Facebook Timeline cover photo. I can send you pictures of myself to include if you're interested. Winner gets lots of views and gratitude from me forever  :D

Edit: If you aren't artistic but know somebody who is, they are more than welcome to join! I've already written about this in my journal on deviantART in hopes of more hits, so it's not limited only to Bay12.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Migrants Missing Upper Bodies
« on: August 26, 2012, 09:19:08 am »
Somebody asked what the deal was here, and I couldn't honestly tell them. They had 7 migrants arrive without upper bodies.

"They came to my fort with upper bodies just crawling around. They are still alive a year later. What?"

Any clues?

Other Games / Duelmasters/Duel II Gladiatorial Online?
« on: August 25, 2012, 06:08:50 pm »
So there is a play-by-mail game that used to be called Duelmasters (which now goes by the name of Duel II). I played demos of it before and really enjoyed the depth of the whole setup. I am certain a game with similar mechanics must be online somewhere, or at least be relatively easy to recreate--Pit of War just isn't doing it for me. Is anyone aware of what I'm talking about, or perhaps in possession of some obscure knowledge about online gladiatorial combat sims? It'd be awesome to make an online version if there wasn't one, although with certain differences to avoid any potential legal disputes. I wonder if anybody would be interested in something like that?

Here are some links for context (the game is pretty brilliantly done):

Life Advice / The Dreaded Job Search
« on: August 18, 2012, 12:26:47 am »
The title pretty much says it all. I've gotten to a point where I want gainful employment, more than what I'd be making back in China (10k RMB/month, or 400 USD/week post taxes). That being said, I have begun my first "real" job hunt ever. I have worked in agribusiness and have also done translation and teaching in China, but nothing serious since I'm afraid of commitment. Now, however, it looks like it's time for me to work on finding a career path to embark upon. I've honestly been dreading it for years, but you can only travel so long and so far before life bites you in the ass. I'm actually not lazy--I grew up on a farm where laziness is not an option--so that's not the issue. It's just got a lot to do with my fear of being locked into something for the rest of my life.

These days are going by with me feeling like a corralled zombie... Ugh. A bullet might be more desirable.

TLDR: Do you know of any good methods for job searching? I've just created a LinkedIn account and perused some random jobs that want like 50 years of experience...  :-\

Thanks for any/all input.

Life Advice / Musix
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:29:15 am »
So I haven't updated the music on my iPod in around 3-4 years. Aside from the classics, it's time to get new stuff. I recently arrived in the United States from China, which was a musical desert--I actually hear stuff I enjoy again. The only genres I stray from are jazz and contemporary country. If you guys have a top 5 or 10 and wanna let me in on your faves, I'd totally love it and owe you. If you need more background info about my tastes, I will provide. From what I've seen, a lot of you guys like generally enjoyable music, which is why I trust you all! Much obliged,

The Mantid

Other Games / Risk: The Game of Global Domination
« on: August 16, 2012, 11:29:52 pm »
Since Pogo has the rights to use Hasbro's Risk trademark online, I've found myself playing lots of it. I'd love to play with some fellow B12ers because I like you all and enjoy not getting trolled by single teen mothers. If anybody wants to play, we should engage in a deadly world-dominating tango.

Edit: I do not like Warlight, because the rules are not standard Risk rules. The place is also trolled by millions of multi-account Poles--Pogo is the only place I've found "real" Risk online for free.

DF General Discussion / Drunk Fortress
« on: July 26, 2012, 07:08:48 pm »
Does anybody out there actually do this? I heard about it a long time ago, and then I appropriated the idea and started my own Drunk Fortresses (on the weekends, don't judge me!). For those who aren't aware of what it is, the name pretty much says it all: You get drunk and start a fortress. You are not allowed to play or continue this particular fortress unless you are drunk/re-drunk.

It seems to me that I've had amazing(ly bad) results playing Drunk Fortress. I love it. And of course if you're playing with friends it isn't hard to make a drinking game out of the whole ordeal.

Edit: It's a thing now. A real thing. Drink deep, friends--it's time to fuck shit up.

Creative Projects / Unintentionally Creative

My friend, RadGH, showed me his Draw Something game picture which reeked of DF. Draw Something, for those of you who didn't know before (like myself), is a game where you draw a picture for the other person, who then guesses a word.

DF General Discussion / Tileset Hijinx
« on: March 14, 2012, 07:14:37 am »
Has anybody else been tricked into downloading a tileset that consisted wholly of pixellated dwarf dongs?

I have to admit, I kind of liked it. Masterwork.
