If I recall correctly, most of those marksdwarves were killed when I inadvertently flooded the entry corridor with magma.

Sounds like drainage pits in front of the fortifications are in order. Keep the fortifications dry that way. Make it deep, so stuff that falls in dies. Or just put magma at the bottom.

I suddenly remembered and I'm very pleased to see this still going. One day I might get the chance to drink heavily enough to play 4 months and then fall asleep again. I'm ashamed that I've only managed it once.
