My biggest problem is that currently large forts end up as an endless cycle of necessary micromanagement that gets boring after a while but can't be 'delegated'.

Until such time as some system is implemented in game to do this, there is a third party program capable of this. Dwarf Foreman can be set up (provided you have a manager appointed; I'm not sure if they need an office) to periodically check your stocks and queue up certain jobs based on user-defined thresholds. Last I checked, it couldn't do much more than queue more "Brew Drink" jobs, and the creator was having fun with some of the odd things he managed to pull off, such as getting his dwarves to make basalt crossbow bolts (If memory serves, it wasn't a custom reaction, but rather an experiment to see if queue a specific job with a specific material).

Fakeedit: I went looking for a link to Dwarf Foreman, and found that the latest version of DFHack includes this sort of functionality. DFHack is easy to find, while Foreman takes a little more effort, so here's a direct link to the thread.

I've been playing mostly adventure mode on DF since the 2010 release. Now that the new release is just around the corner, and the 100,000x times more fun adventure is almost out, I just can't bring myself to play DF.

At least I've managed to work off my withdrawal for DF IRL. Even managed to upgrade my house plumbing after years of procrastination
