If an animal sponsorship drive happens again...
« on: January 27, 2012, 08:26:37 am »

I want to sponsor a special monster. One that holds a special place in my heart.

The Cookie Monster.

It'd be worth it just for the description! I'm thinking "A medium sized creature fond of cookies and other things beginning with the letter c. Beware its deadly om nom nom" ... plus, of course, the introduction of a cookie/bakery industry as a side effect!

I realise of course that it's probably a pipe dream, given copyright issues and so forth. Perhaps an allegorical version like the Dwarf Bread Fiend ...

What creature/animal/monster would you sponsor (assuming it would be allowed)?

Koalas, man. Them Koalas. Badgers ain't got nothin' on them! Imagine, with the right environmental conditions, entire forts could fall to onslaughts of koalas... Ohh hell yes, that'd make me squeal with delight. :D

Tasmanian Devils and Wolverines. They'd basically be uber-badgers.

I could totally get behind battle koalas  :D As an Australian myself, the perversity of it makes me giggle  :)

Cartoon/comic versions, or real ones? Because wolverines with blades sliding out of their forepaws would be so dorfy. Also, the battle reports for taz devils would be hilarious  :D

Real ones of course. That gave me an idea: We've already got fire imps, why not sentient tornados? Those would be REALLY Fun.

OH! We GOTTA have cassowaries. Anything for more Fun, right?  :D

Would the giant koala be a "drop bear"?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

And with multi z-level trees... Yikes. And then, were-koalas. Oh, I'm not sure if this is true, (they're an endangered species so we can't really test it IRL) but I read in a book once that koalas are rather flammable, thanks to their diet of eucalypt leaves... ;D

As a fantasy world, Dwarf Fortress is terribly lacking in Dinosaurs.

I would sponsor the Utahraptor. Heck, rename it the Uristraptor.

Just when you thought it was safe to harvest wood.

You'd just need to add a new tree with a random chance of spawning a koala upon being chopped down. Nothing beats more danger for the only dwarf that actually goes outside.

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.

Appropriate, what with 'Urist' meaning 'Dagger'.

I would add Jumping Spiders, particularly Giant ones, 'GJS's; outdoors instead of caves, no webs but lurks in ambush (like a goblin ambush squad), jumps to attack with a venomous bite.

Wall climbing ability crossed my mind as well, but that might be too much !!fun!! (particularly combined with ambush stealth)

No, drop bear should be a separate-but-related species with extra sharp fangs, claws, and toughened posteriors. I would await with glee my first Giant Drop bear Zombie Arse.
